Abstract

In this study was aimed at identifying active substances that can be used as antibacterial agents. To reach this target, different solvent extracts (n-hexane and methanol) of microalgae strain Scenedesmus sp. AUMA-020 were examined. Phytochemical screening of n-hexane extract from microalgae strain Scenedesmus sp. AUMA-020 showed the presence of terpenoids and saponins, while methanol extracts contained flavonoids, phenolics, steroids, terpenoins and saponins. N-hexane extract has strong antibacterial activity compared to methanol extract. Both extracts isolates showed no antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli bacteria. In conclusion, the studied microalgae strain Scenedesmus sp. AUMA-020 can be considered as a potential natural source of bioactive compounds with antibacterial activity.

Abstract

The primary focus of this study revolves around the microbiological assessment of the effectiveness of ethyl acetate extract derived from Dragon's Scales Leaf (Pyrrosia piloselloides (L)) against Staphylococcus aureus. The employed method entailed the use of the diffusion technique with paper discs. The ethyl acetate extract of Dragon's Scales Leaf was formulated in three distinct concentrations, namely 40%, 60%, and 80%. In addition, Gentamicin at a 1% concentration served as the positive control. The measurements yielded inhibitory zone diameters of 14.05 mm, 15.49 mm, 14.90 mm, and 14.81 mm for the ethyl acetate extract and Gentamicin, respectively. This investigation's observed inhibitory zone diameters fall within the 'weak' category, with the highest extract concentration displaying a strength equivalent to Gentamicin as the positive control. In light of these findings, it can be concluded that the ethyl acetate extract of Dragon's Scales Leaf (Pyrrosia piloselloides (L)) can impede the growth of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria.

Abstract

Background: Antibiotic resistance has spurred the exploration of novel antibacterial agents, including endophytic bacteria from medicinal plants like Jatropha multifida L. (Betadine leaves), traditionally used as antiseptics. Objective: To assess the antibacterial activity of endophytic bacterial isolates from Betadine leaves against Staphylococcus aureus. Methods: A laboratory-based experimental study employing the paper disc diffusion method. Endophytic isolates were cultured in Nutrient Broth, and centrifuged supernatants were tested for inhibition zones compared to positive (chloramphenicol) and negative (Na.CMC) controls. Results: The endophytic isolate produced a 16.11 mm inhibition zone (moderate activity), while chloramphenicol showed 27.63 mm (strong activity). No inhibition was observed in the negative control. Conclusion: Endophytic bacteria from Betadine leaves exhibit potential as natural antibacterial agents, though their efficacy is lower than standard antibiotics. Further development requires active compound characterization and toxicity studies.

Abstract

Sweet Corn Starch (Zea mays L. var. saccharata) is composed of two fractions: amylose and amylopectin. The determination of amylose content in Sweet Corn Starch is carried out using the spectrophotometric method. This method employs a 2% iodine solution as a reagent, which reacts with starch to generate a coloured solution that can be measured using a spectrophotometer. The amylose content is quantified through visible spectrophotometry, resulting in a regression equation of y ̂ = 0.006 + 25.2x, with a coefficient of determination (R2) = 0.998 and a correlation coefficient (r) = 0.9989. The amylose content in Sweet Corn Starch is determined to be 28.65%, whereas the amylopectin content is found to be 71.35%. Furthermore, the analysis provides additional parameters: Standard Deviation (SD) = ± 0.0044, Detection Limit (BD) = 0.0005 mg/ml, and Quantity Limit (BK) = 0.0018 mg/ml. These parameters offer valuable insights into the quality and properties of the sweet corn starch sample.
