Abstract

Rabies is a zoonotic disease that can attack humans through dog bites. Various methods have been performed for prevention, including socialization activities about rabies. The aim of community service, conducted by the Clinical, Reproduction, Pathology, and Reproduction Laboratory, Faculty of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, Nusa Cendana University in Kualin Village, was to increase knowledge about rabies. Socialization was a method to increase awareness about rabies in the Kualin community, which this method using the Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) approach. The ABCD concept consists of 1). Identification of community assets; 2). Partner involvement; 3). Participation of the community service team; and 4). Partnership collaboration. The poster was one of the communication, information, and education (KIE) tools for transferring knowledge. Based on the results of the pre-and post-test, it shows that this method is quite successful where public knowledge about the symptoms of animals infected with rabies (58.82% to 88.23%), symptoms of humans infected with rabies (35.29% to 76.47%), and assistance if bitten by infected dogs (76.47% to 88.23%) increased significantly. So, this method can be applied to socialize other animal diseases that cause economic losses to the Kualin community.

Abstract

Infectious animal diseases, particularly zoonoses, pose a significant problem to the inhabitants of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Province because of the high animal population, especially livestock, and the close interaction between humans, animals, and the environment. The Faculty of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, Universitas Nusa Cendana, Kupang, held the Animal Disease Investigation Training Program for Veterinary Professional Education Students (PPDH) to overcome this significant challenge. This one-day workshop had been attended by 80 participants, consisting of 26 men (32.5%) and 54 women (67.5%). This training aims to improve students' understanding and skills in zoonotic disease investigation through theoretical and practical approaches. Theoretical sessions were conducted by giving presentations to provide a foundation of knowledge. At the same time, interactive approaches in the form of group discussions and field practice were designed to improve the ability to analyze and handle cases in the field. The results of this training are expected to equip participants with the ability to investigate, identify risks, and implement disease prevention and control measures. The expected implication of this activity is to improve the ability of prospective veterinarians to face the challenges of animal diseases in NTT, especially in infectious disease detection. This training provides relevant theoretical and practical experience in protecting animal and public health in the region.

Abstract

The uncontrolled population of dogs and cats in urban areas poses a significant risk for the transmission of zoonotic diseases, including rabies. As a rabies-endemic region in Indonesia, Kupang City requires effective strategies to reduce the population of rabies vector animals, one of which is through sterilization programs. This community service initiative aimed to support population control of dogs and cats as a preventive measure against the transmission of rabies. Sterilization procedures were carried out at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of the University of Nusa Cendana during October 2024, involving 25 owned animals (both male and female dogs and cats) from various areas in Kupang, including Penfui, Oesapa, Liliba, and Naikolan. The surgeries were performed by a veterinary medical team using standard surgical techniques, with a focus on animal welfare. The activity received a positive response from the community and demonstrated that sterilization is an effective and socially acceptable method for controlling the domestic animal population. Similar programs can be implemented regularly and sustainably to support rabies elimination efforts in Kupang City.
