Abstract

Vocabulary is the first language component that students should master. However, many students faced problems in mastering vocabulary. This study aims to find out the improvement of students’ vocabulary through the use of Kubis and to investigate the obstacles faced by the students in learning vocabulary by using the Kubis application. This research employed Mix-method. The data was collected using the test and interview.  Seventh-grade students were involved in this study as the respondents of the research. The result of this study showed that students’ vocabulary mastery was improved after learning by using Kubis application. However, the data also revealed that there are some obstacles students faced when using Kubis. The difficulties are caused by several reasons, such as technological barriers, passive students, the restriction on using smartphones by the parents, and the application is less interesting for students.

Abstract

Reading is one of the English skills that has a significant role in helping students acquire English better and succeed in the academic field. Unfortunately, most students still struggle with reading comprehension, especially descriptive text. The students can still not scan what descriptive text tells about, although they have read it repetitively. This study is proposed to discover students’ difficulties in reading descriptive text. The method is qualitative design with 35 subjects. The data were collected through interviews and observation. The result of this study showed that the difficulties in reading comprehension faced by students are due to the fact that the length of the text can frustrate students to grasp the meaning. Secondly, there is a lack of vocabulary mastery; most students are poor in vocabulary mastery and face difficulty gaining information on descriptive text when they find unfamiliar words. Thirdly, when reading without strategies, most students only read the text without implementing the appropriate methods to comprehend it better. Fourthly, there is a lack of prior knowledge: most students do not have background knowledge of the topic they read. Lastly, limited reading practice, since students only practice reading when English subjects have limited reading references.

Based on the results of the data analysis, it was revealed that there was a moderate correlation between teacher self-efficacy and self-motivation. However, teacher self-efficacy and motivation did not have any influence on teacher implementation of the 2024 National Curriculum. Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the impact of using animated videos on students’ motivation in learning English. This research was conducted at MTsN 4 Guhang using an experimental-based approach. Class VIII.1 comprised 27 students as the experimental group, and the students of Class VIII.2 were in the control class with 27 students. The data is collected by using a questionnaire consisting of 24 items, in the form of a Likert scale. Based on the results of the independent sample t-test, there was a statistically significant difference in students’ motivation between the experimental class that used animated videos and the control class that received conventional instruction. The t-test produced a p-value of less than 0.001, indicating that the alternative hypothesis (H_a) was rejected. Therefore, it can be concluded that the use of animated videos effectively increases students’ motivation in learning English.

Abstract

This research investigates the effectiveness of using short video clips to enhance students’ comprehension of the Simple Present Tense in English language learning. The study employed a pre-experimental design with a one-group pre-test and post- test model, involving 31 seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Kuala Batee. Data collection was conducted through multiple-choice tests administered before and after the treatment. The analysis showed a significant improvement in students’ understanding, with the average pre-test score rising from 43.39 to 74.19 in the post- test. A paired sample t-test revealed a statistically significant difference (Sig. 2-tailed = 0.000), confirming the effectiveness of short video clips in improving grammatical comprehension. These findings suggest that incorporating engaging and context-rich audiovisual materials can significantly support grammar instruction in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) setting. However, limitations such as the small sample size call for further research involving broader and more diverse populations to generalize the results. Additionally, combining short video clips with other interactive teaching strategies is recommended to maximize learning outcomes.
