Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The presence of preservatives in food is a common thing to extend the shelf life of foods. The bad effects appliying chemical preservatives cause both environmental pollution and health disturbing. Consuming chemical preservatives for a long time will will cause cancer. Natural preservatives is needed to reducing the bad effects. One of the Plants can be applied as natural preservatives is cat root leaves (Acalypha indica L. The study aims were to determine the activity and effective concentration of cat root leaf extract as a natural preservative on tomatoes and to identify the its phytochemical content. Activity of cat root leaf extract as a preservative was subjected by organoleptic, meanwhile the phytochemical content by tube-test. The results showed 8% cat root leaf extract effective as natural preservative according to organoleptic observation with observed time for 20 days. The result of tube-test showed cat root leaf extract contain compounds likes alkaloid, flavonoid, saponin, tannin, and terpenoid.

Abstract

The galangal plant, which many people still don't know about, has a variety of interesting benefits. Among other things, kencur leaves contain chemical compounds such as flavonoids and essential oils which have antimicrobial properties. This study aims to activate the antibacterial activity of ethanol extract of kencur leaves against Propionibacterium acnes, as well as to measure how effective it is at different concentrations. The extraction process uses 96% ethanol solvent with the Remaceration method, which is then accompanied by phytochemical screening and TLC tests to strengthen the results. Antibacterial activity tests were carried out using the disc diffusion method at concentrations of 0.3%, 0.6%, 1.2% and 2.4%. The results show the inhibition zone at each concentration, namely 6.86 mm, 8.4 mm, 9.8 mm, and 10.96 mm. Phytochemical analysis identified secondary metabolite compounds such as tannins, saponins and flavonoids with Rf values of 0.925 each; 0.825; and 0.8125. Statistical analysis showed a significant difference between concentrations of 0.3% and 1.2%.

Abstract

Traditional treatment remains one of the widely used treatment methods to this day. One of the plants with potential as conventional medicine is the Ketapang leaf (Terminalia catappa L), which belongs to the Combretaceae family. Ketapang leaves contain various compounds such as flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, and saponins, with flavonoids known for their high antioxidant properties. This study aims to compare the total flavonoid content in fresh and dried Ketapang leaf extracts. The extraction method used is maceration with 96% ethanol solvent. Evaluation includes organoleptic tests, moisture content, drying shrinkage, phytochemical screening, and thin-layer chromatography (TLC). Total flavonoid content testing is conducted using the colorimetric method with UV-Vis spectrophotometry at a wavelength of 430 nm, with quercetin as the standard. The results show that the yield of fresh Ketapang leaves was 8.74% w/w, while dried Ketapang leaves were 8.40% w/w. In the TLC tested, the Rf values of fresh and dried Ketapang leaf extracts were 0.95 and 0.94, respectively. The total flavonoid content in fresh Ketapang leaf extract was 24.19 mgQE/gram, while for dried Ketapang leaf extract it was 16.84 mgQE/gram. Statistical analysis with an independent sample t-test showed a significant difference (p<0.05) between fresh and dried Ketapang leaf extracts.
