Abstract

Background: An epidemiological study conducted in two kindergartens located in Ketabang and Embong Kaliasin reported that 63% of kindergarteners were affected by dental caries. The study also found that only 8% of them received dental treatment. The remaining 92% of kindergarteners never had dental treatment due to uncovered health insurance, unavailability of parents during working days and hours, mother's education level, mother's medical history, paternal support in dental and oral health care. Promotive, preventive, and referral efforts for dental and oral health can be done by empowering UKGS teachers in the kindergarten concerned and in collaboration with local public health center routine 6-month dental check-up. Purpose: To promote dental health education for children and forming the habit of visiting dentist for dental check-up. Methods: This program was intended to support UKGS teachers' roles and encourage the mother to admit their children for a dental check-up. The dental check-up results of Dharma Putra kindergarteners were then recorded to the report. The report consisted of the prioritized tooth to treat, treated tooth, and treatment fee. Results: The dentists have recorded the examination results on the report sheet and informed the parents about their children's dental and oral health status. The UKGS teacher then scheduled follow-up appointment per group per week for dental treatment. 3 out of 3 kindergarteners attended the follow-up appointment. Conclusion: This program is effective to promote children to come to dentist.

Abstract

Background: Two main influencing factors of dental and oral health in developing countries are attitude and behavior. According to Lawrence Green's theory, a person's behavior is influenced by intention, namely reinforcing factor, predisposing factor, and enabling factor. One of reinforcing factors that has an important role for a mother in adopting and promoting healthy behavior is social support. The study found issues on two social support domains, which were information support and instrumental support. Therefore, "Bu GISELA” or Buku Gigi Sehat Keluarga (Family Dental Health Book) was created to promote dental and oral health by habituating regular tooth-brushing activities. Purpose: To promote dental and oral health care and maternal social support in mothers and kindergarteners in Made Urban Village. Bu GISELA was expected to improve informational support in mothers. Methods: A total of 20 mothers of kindergarteners in Made Urban Village filled pre-test and post-test questionnaires. The obtained data were then processed using a paired t-test to see the relationship between the two variables. Results: A significant increase in knowledge (p-value <0.05) on post-test compared to pre-test. Conclusion: Mothers' dental health knowledge and social support increased significantly after they received "Bu GISELA”.

Abstract

Background: Peri-implantitis is one of many factors that can cause implant failure, with common cases ranging from 1%-47% and the highest incidence ranging from 10.7%- 47.2%. Mechanical debridement (MD) is currently the standard for peri-implantitis treatment. However, MD has limitations in the removal of infected tissue. Moreover, the rough texture of the implant's surface and bacteria adhesion and colonization increases the difficulty in performing MD. To overcome these limitations, adjunct therapy is needed to increase peri-implantitis treatment effectiveness. One of those adjunct therapies, photodynamic therapy (PDT), is used to destroy bacterial cells and significantly reduce inflammatory cell infiltration around the implant. Purpose: To describe the effectiveness of PDT as an adjunct therapy to MD in periimplantitis treatment through narrative review. Review: PDT is effective in reducing the number of bacteria, plaque index (PI), bleeding on probing (BOP), probing depth (PD), crestal bone loss (CBL), and excessive proinflammatory cytokines (IL-6, IL-1β, TNF-α) in patients. However, the effectiveness of PDT can be influenced by several factors, including patients' conditions, such as diabetes and smoking habits, types of photosensitizers used, and exposure time. Conclusion: PDT is an effective adjunctive therapy to MD in peri-implantitis treatment since it can improve clinical parameter values, significantly reduce P. gingivalis, and decrease proinflammatory cytokines.

Abstract

Background: Toothache is the most common oral pain and has been confirmed as a public health problem. World Health Organization (WHO) stated that oral health problem impacts 90% of pre-adolescent, ranging from the feeling of distressing pain, nutritional intake disturbance, to the extent of school absence. Geospatial Information System (GIS) is a method to describe a data in a spatial geographic mapping, it can be a valuable tool to explore the relationships between health and its determinant factors, and also show the locations where the problem occurs. Purpose: To describe the geospatial mapping of toothache prevalence and its determinant behavioural factors among Indonesian children. Methods: It is a secondary data analysis of the 5th wave of Indonesian Family Life Survey (IFLS) data. The 7,010 respondents’ data from children aged 5-15 years old were analysed and mapped using Quantum GIS. Geospatial data mapping was conducted by inserting toothache prevalence and its determinant factors to the geographical map. Results: Based on the mapping, there are a consistent pattern of the prevalence, in which South Sulawesi and South Kalimantan provinces have the very high number in toothache prevalence, bad sugar consumption behavior and bad toothbrushing behavior. Conclusions: This study showed the prevalence and distribution of toothache and its behavioural determinants among children age 5-15 years old in Indonesia, across provinces. Therefore, toothache among Indonesian children is an oral health problem that needs attention and intervention.
