Abstract

Background: Low birth weight (LBW) remains a significant global health issue, leading to higher rates of infant and child morbidity and mortality. In 2022, Indonesia had a 12.58% rate, while in Kutai Kartanegara Regency, East Kalimantan, the rate was higher at 16.30%. The Covid-19 pandemic, which severely impacted East Kalimantan also influenced LBW rates. Objectives: Analyzed the determinants of LBW incidence during the Covid-19 pandemic in Kutai Kartanegara. Methods: This population of 1265 mothers delivered in four public health centers with the highest cases of BBLR. This study used a case control design for 240 mothers, including 120 mothers who gave birth to babies with low birth weight and 120 mothers who gave birth to babies with LBW. Data were obtained from e-cohort data according to specific inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data collection occurred from August until October 2022 through interviews with structured questionnaires and maternal child handbooks. Data analysis was performed with logistic regression. Results: Determinant factors LBW were maternal nutritional risk (upper arm circumference <23.5 cm) (OR=2.800, 95% CI=1.237-6.340), history of anemia (OR=3.156, 95% CI=1.716-5.804), history of Covid-19 (OR=4.357, 95% CI=2.355-8.063), living with a smoker (OR=2.505, 95% CI=1.716-2.804), and not having health insurance (OR=2.744, 95% CI=1.435-5.247). Conclusions: Internal factors such as age, under arm circumference, anemia, Covid-19, birth spacing, and parity and external factors (such as living with smokers, not having insurance) were interconnected in contributing to the risk of LBW, the pandemic further influenced these determinant factors.

Abstract

Background: In Indonesia, approximately 32% of Indonesian adolescents experience anemia, if it not addressed effectively, adolescents suffering anemia pose a risk of resulting in stunted growth in their future offspring. Addressing nutritional issues including anemia in adolescence is a crucial step in efforts to break the cycle of stunting. Objectives: This study aimed to review and analyze various essential health interventions for adolescent girls as a strategy to break the cycle of stunting through a comprehensive article review. Methods: Literature was collected from four English-language databases: Scopus, PubMed, Springer Link, and EBSCOhost published from January 2013 to November 2023. The authors conducted article searching using the keywords "Adolescent girl" OR "teenage girl" OR "young woman" AND Intervention AND stunting. Inclusion criteria for this study encompassed community- or population-based research utilizing cross-sectional, cohort, and experimental methods. Exclusion criteria included systematic literature reviews and studies that did not report relevant findings. Ultimately, 10 articles were reviewed from a total of 4,596 articles identified, following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA)2020 checklist. Discussions: The health intervention package designed for adolescent girls to prevent stunting includes health education delivered through various methods such as PowerPoint presentations, videos, booklets, and comics, along with the implementation of youth integrated post (posyandu) and community or school-based health intervention. Health promotion materials cover diet, personal hygiene, and supplementation of micronutrients and macronutrients. Conclusions: Implementing the appropriate package of essential health interventions constitutes an effective and efficient approach to break the cycle of stunting.

Abstract

Background: Overweight prevalence in Indonesia is 16.5% in late teens. Lifestyle is a risk factor for overweight teenagers, especially those who live in urban areas. Objectives: To analyze the relationship between lifestyle and eating patterns on the incidence of overweight in teenagers living in urban areas. Methods: This research was an observational study with a cross-sectional design. The population of teenagers in Jakarta aged 15 - 18 was 996, based on Ministry of Health Basic Health Research 2018 data. The sample number were 372 using the research criteria of simple random sampling. Research instruments include questionnaires, digital weight scales, and stadiometers. The statistical test used Chi Square to determine the risk factors for overweight. Results: The number of overweight teenagers was 0.12%; the majority were in their late teens (55.6%), female (52.7%), rarely consumed sweet foods (62.9%), often consumed sweet drinks (58.9%), rarely consume fatty/fried foods (61.0%), often consume vegetables and fruit (65.1%), do not drink alcohol (98.4%), moderate sport activity (41.9%), and not smoking (77.7%). Overweight risk factors are consuming sweet drinks (p=0.044; OR=1.582; CI=1.010-2.477) and education (p=0.040; OR=1.847; CI=1.059 – 3.220). Adolescents with frequent sweet drinks consumption have a 1.58 risk of being overweight compared to those who do not consume sweet drinks. Adolescents with higher education are at risk of being overweight by 1.84 compared to those with lower education. Conclusions: Risk factors for overweight Jakarta teenagers are frequent consumption of sweet drinks and advanced education.
