Abstract

This writing is based on the generalization of understanding towards hadith. It means that all hadiths are understood in the same way without distinguishing the structure of the hadith, whether it is transmitted by wording or meaning (riwayat bi al-lafzh or riwayat bi al-ma’na), the absolute or relative field of the hadith’s content (related to creed and worship) or relative (related to transactions). Hadiths are often only understood with textual interpretation techniques, with only a small portion expanding them with contextual interpretation techniques, both historical and sociological contexts, as an idea. In this context, the understanding of the Prophet’s hadith needs to consider several things, including Prophet Muhammad as the source of information, the companions as recipients of information, the form and scope of the meaning of the Prophet’s hadith, events surrounding the emergence of the Prophet’s hadith, and the social and community conditions that occurred at that time.

Abstract

This article reviews Ahmad Amin's thoughts on hadith. Based on the book “Fajr al-Islām,” seven aspects of hadith criticism are found, namely the absence of codification, fabrication of hadiths, reasons for the fabrication of hadiths, efforts by scholars to rectify the fabrication and the steps they take through various means, prominent figures in hadith, efforts made for the codification of hadiths, and the treasury of hadiths in the dissemination of culture. These are the seven aspects of hadith criticism criticized by Amin in “Fajr al-Islām”.

Abstract

So far, hadith has been a theological reference to strengthen religious behavior. It is often used as motivation to foster religious enthusiasm related to the social dimension. From there emerge hadiths that are so familiar to the ears of Muslims, as they are often conveyed and directly related to social issues. However, the fame of a hadith often closes our concern to critically assess the status of the hadith. This paper attempts to critically examine the highly popular hadiths in society to see the extent of their authenticity. All of this needs to be done as an effort to place the hadith clearly and authentically and to distinguish between the words and the chain of words.

Abstract

The critique of hadith matn is relatively rare among muhaddithin compared to their efforts in hadith isnad critique. This is not without reason, as they believe a hadith of the Prophet cannot be considered authentic without a chain of transmission connecting it back to the source, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). A well-phrased statement that aligns with Islamic teachings cannot be regarded as a hadith if the chain of narrators linking it to the Prophet is not found. Conversely, a sound isnad has no value if the matn cannot be substantiated. This paper aims to elaborate on the evolving methodology in the critique of hadith matn. This study will discuss various aspects underlying this evolution, including the crucial role of matn critique in ensuring the integrity and authenticity of hadith. Through a historical approach and critical analysis, the research will explore how scholars have developed new methods to assess the validity of hadith matn and the implications of these approaches on hadith sciences as a whole. Additionally, the paper will identify the challenges faced in the application of matn critique, such as overcoming subjective biases and maintaining a balance between isnad and matn critique. By examining the views of both classical and contemporary scholars, this research will provide a comprehensive overview of the evolution of matn critique methodology and its relevance in the modern context. This study aims to offer deep insights into the importance of hadith matn critique and encourage further research in this field, thereby enriching Islamic scholarship and strengthening the understanding of the hadiths of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
