Abstract

The aims of this study is to find out the Gender Representation in Love, Sex, Death, and Words Surprising Tales from a Year in Literature by John Sutherland and Stephen Fender and to reveal the message between them. This study uses descriptive qualitative analysis since the data are not statistically analyzed and the data of this study are picture and text, which exist in the book. The findings of this study will show that diction and gender have integrated each other. Both of them have much influence in Love, Sex, Death, and Words Surprising Tales from a Year in Literature. Finally, this study has much beneficial for those who want to know more about the way gender takes part in the book. There are several ways to make a good literature work especially in this book and one of the strategy is gender. Gender has a unique way to make literature work can be seen beautifully. Additionally, this research gives additional information for those who intend to conduct the research on the same topic but different object of the research to get varied result of the research.

Abstract

English is very important and in the era of globalization English will be found in everyday life. Therefore, children must be provided with sufficient provisions as early as possible to get learning English, one of which starts from elementary school age because at that age between the ages of 6-13 years, children are in a critical period, namely experiencing very rapid development of the brain, so that easy to understand, remember and apply. SDN Gampingrowo 02 Sidoarjo, which is located in a remote area the of Tarik sub-district, is far from urban areas, making people have different thoughts about school. People in these areas tend to think that school is not important, so many children do not get an education. This results in a very small number of students in each class. The small number of students also makes teachers in the surrounding area less interested in working in the school which makes the school lack of teachers in it. Due to these conditions, we decided to do community service with the Total Physical Response (TPR) technique. TPR technique is a learning technique that focuses on body movement. This technique is often used in learning activities that require a student's memory. With movement, students are easier to memorize a vocabulary because they are not easily bored and move actively which can improve their ability to remember. This community service activity was carried out on Wednesday and Thursday, 22-23 June 2022. This activity lasted for 2 consecutive days. The results of this community service activity show that by teaching modeling with the Total Physical Response (TPR) technique 5th-grade students at SDN Gampingrowo 02 Sidoarjo, totaling 10 people, can understand English vocabulary easily. The TPR technique is very influential and succession introducing basic English to elementary school students. In addition, teachers can find out about learning with TPR strategies, namely using body movements and music. The TPR strategy can also train students' self-confidence. So, it is highly recommended to use the Total Physical Response (TPR) technique when adding English vocabulary.

Abstract

Background. The lack of awareness and knowledge possessed by English teachers about the importance of literary works in learning English in elementary schools is a significant factor that makes English learning does not runs optimally. Therefore, this community service program (PKM) needs to be carried out to help students at one of MI (Islamic Elementary School) in Pranti village, Sidoarjo learn English effectively through literary works in the form of fairy tales. Method. The implementation of this program was divided into three stages, namely planning, implementation, and evaluation. At the planning stage, location survey and preliminary observation were conducted to get an overview of the partners. The team also discussed the problems experienced by the school and offered solutions. The implementation stage was carried out by conducting dissemination on learning English through literary works and implementation of English language learning through literary works. This program involved 25 third graders of the MI. Results. The result of the pretest revealed that all of the students (25 students) had unsatisfying scores.  After the implementation, the scores increased. All of the students (100%) achieved satisfying scores. The pretest and posttest scores showed a significantly different result as evidenced by the N-Gain score of 0.72 (72.2%). Conclusion. The community service program reveals that literary works in the form of fairy tales involved in classroom English learning through a short movie and flashcards is fairly effective to help the students learn English, especially in mastering the vocabulary. Abstrak: Kurangnya kesadaran dan pengetahuan yang dimiliki oleh guru bahasa Inggris akan pentingnya karya sastra dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris di sekolah dasar menjadi faktor signifikan yang menyebabkan pembelajaran bahasa Inggris menjadi kurang maksimal.Oleh karena itu, program pengabdian kepada masyarakat (PKM) ini perlu dilakukan untuk membantu siswa di salah satu MI (Madrasah Ibtidaiyah) di Desa Pranti, Sidoarjo mempelajari bahasa Inggris secara efektif melaui karya sastra yang berbentuk cerita dongeng. Metode. Pelaksanaan program ini dibagi dalam tiga tahapan, yaitu perencanaan, pelaksanaan, dan evaluasi.  Pada tahap perencanaan, survei lokasi dan observasi awal dilakukan untuk mendapatkan gambaran dari mitra. Tim ini juga mendiskusikan masalah yang dialami oleh sekolah tersebut serta menawarkan solusinya. Tahap pelaksanaan berisi kegiatan diseminasi tentang pembelajaran bahasa Inggris melalui karya sastra (berupa cerita dongeng), implementasi pembelajaran bahasa Inggris melalui karya sastra, monitoring dan bimbingan tentang penggunaan karya sastra dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris. Pada tahap terakhir, evaluasi pelaksanaan program dan keberlanjutan program setelah kegiatan PKM selesai. Program ini melibatkan 25 siswa kelas 3 di MI tersebut Hasil. Hasil pretes mengungkapkan bahwa semua siswa (100%) menghasilkan nilai yang tidak memuaskan. Setelah implementasi, nilai mereka meningkat. Semua siswa memperoleh nilai yang memuaskan. Nilai pretes dan posttes menunjukkan perbedaan signifikan yang dibuktikan dengan nilai N-Gain sebesar 0,72 (72,2%). Kesimpulan. Program PKM ini mengungkapkan bahwa karya sastra dalam bentuk cerita dongeng yang dilibatkan dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris di kelas melalui film pendek dan flashcards cukup efektif membantu siswa dalam mempelajari bahasa Inggris, khususnya dalam penguasaan kosakata

Abstract

 Born and raised in a poor family, a childless woman named Margaret who is a wife of an alcoholic, has an ambition for wealth which eventually causes her to live with anxiety. To suppress the anxiety, she uses defense mechanisms. Therefore, this study was conducted to analyze the anxiety and defense mechanisms portrayed through Margaret in the drama, entitled “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof”. This qualitative study analyzed the anxiety and defense mechanisms portrayed in one of the canonical drama of Tennessee Williams using psychological lens. The data describing Margaret's anxiety and defense mechanisms collected from this drama were revealed and interpreted descriptively in order to provide detailed explanation and deep understanding. This study identified that the anxiety experienced by Margaret was resulted from her ambition to inherit the wealth of her father-in-law. Poverty in her past life has led her to become ambitious to pursue her dreams of wealth. Besides, she got anxious about her inability to give a child to her husband. In consequence, her childlessness caused her to have anxiety. To cope with the anxiety, she used three types of defense mechanisms: (1) reaction formation, (2) displacement, and (3) denial.  The female major character experiences anxiety about wealth and childlessness. To protect herself from the anxiety, she uses reaction formation, displacement, and denial as defense mechanisms.

Abstract

The study aims to describe the use of folklore in the classroom to improve students’ reading comprehension and to ascertain the reactions of the students to this approach. 22 students in 9th Grade B at SMPN 1 Sugio are the subjects of the study, which employs the classroom action research methodology. Participation of the students to improve their reading comprehension is the theme of all the key phrases. The teacher needs to inspire the students more, though. Utilizing interviews, observations, and questionnaires, data is gathered. 14.28.% of students met the minimal mastery level criterion, according to their preliminary test results (KKM). The initial cycle was deemed ineffective. Students who attained the bare minimum mastery in The first cycle was deemed a failure. The percentage of students who met the minimal mastery level criterion (KKM) was only 53.57% or 15 students. The second cycle is regarded as a success. It was because 26 students, or 92.85% of the test participants, met the minimal mastery level criterion (KKM). The percentage of students who got up increased with each cycle, and the findings suggested that reading folklore could improve students' reading comprehension. Reading folklore in the classroom raises students' enthusiasm, enjoyment, and participation. Reading the narrative text through folklore can improve students' reading comprehension.

Abstract

There are various ways that can be taken to improve the vocabulary of EFL students. The use of media, as well as teaching methods. This research focuses on developing Comic Strips as a supporting medium for vocabulary teaching. Based on the sections from Comic Strips, students can choose what vocabulary they want to use to complete the available bubbles so that they form sentences and in the end a coherent story. Lecturers can also use Comic Strips to facilitate students in developing ideas in their writings by asking some stimulating questions. In line with the usefulness of Comic Strips to improve the vocabulary of EFL students, the researchers developed comic strip media with certain themes to be used in vocabulary courses for 7 meetings. The researcher believes that the development of Comic Strips media can be effective because it can make students enjoy the teaching and learning process.

Abstract

Belum terdapat aktivitas rutin pengajaran bahasa Inggris untuk meningkatkan kemampuan bahasa Inggris di Madrasah Tahfidz Darul Qur’an Wal Hadith Bukit Badong, Malaysia. Bahkan, pembelajaran pelajaran lainnya di sana masih menggunakan cara tradisional, tidak ada sentuhan teknologi. Hal ini berakibat pada motivasi santri yang rendah dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris dan berpengaruh pada tercapainya tujuan belajar bahasa Inggris terutama dalam hal penguasaan kosakata Bahasa Inggris. Tujuan pengabdian masyarakat ini adalah: 1) untuk meningkatkan penguasaan media pembelajaran berbasis teknologi dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris, 2) untuk meningkatkan motivasi santri dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris, 3) untuk meningkatkan penguasaan kosakata Bahasa Inggris. Media pembelajaran yang akan digunakan pada pengabdian masyarakat internasional ini adalah media pembelajaran yang menarik dan mudah dipahami yaitu papan ular tangga digital. Kegiatan dimulai dengan kegiatan webinar via Zoom meeting di Madrasah Tahfiz Darul Quran Wal Hadith Bukit Badong Malaysia. Setelah webinar, dilanjutkan dengan pendampingan terkait media aplikasi pembelajaran tersebut. Target mitra sasaran tersebut yaitu santri di madrasah tersebut. Kegiatan ini dilakukan di sebuah Madrasah Tahfiz Darul Quran Wal Hadith Bukit Badong Malaysia. Metode pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan cara observasi, tes dan interview. Data dikumpulkan melalui observasi kelas saat proses belajar mengajar online, pemberian tes dan juga hasil rekaman. Analisis data dilakukan melalui mendeskripsikan data hasil observasi dan interview serta menghitung nilai rata-rata perolehan hasil tes. Hasil dari kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan papan permainan ular tangga digital dapat meningkatkan penguasaan media pembelajaran berbasis teknologi dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris santri dan ustadz/ustadzah/guru, motivasi santri dalam belajar bahasa Inggris, dan kosakata Bahasa Inggris santri.

Abstract

Pendidikan adalah salah satu tonggak kemajuan suatu bangsa. Pendidikan masih menjadi atensi serius di tiap daerah agar mengalami peningkatan. Mutu pendidikan di SMP PGRI 6 di Surabaya sudah baik namun masih perlu terus ditingkatkan terutama dalam hal pembelajaran bahasa Inggris berbasis teknologi yang masih minim. Pembelajaran bahasa Inggris akan jauh lebih menarik jika dikemas dengan perpaduan teknologi dan disajikan kepada siswanya dalam bentuk visual learning. Sebagai solusi, dibutuhkan adanya pendampingan dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris secara daring berbasis teknologi dengan menerapkan aplikasi jamboard dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris. Jamboard adalah aplikasi berperangkat lunak yang handal yang dirancang sebagai papan tulis digital yang memudahkan perubahan secara real-time. Kegiatan Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat (PKM) ini difokuskan pada penerapan aplikasi jamboard dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris pada siswa SMP PGRI 6 Surabaya. Target sasaran kegiatan PKM ini yaitu pada siswa di sekolah tersebut kelas 7, 8 dan 9 sebanyak 30 orang. Metode pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan cara observasi dan interview. Analisis data dilakukan melalui mendeskripsikan data hasil observasi dan interview. Hasil dari kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan aplikasi jamboard dapat meningkatkan motivasi dalam belajar bahasa Inggris dan penguasaan teknologi siswa SMP tersebut.

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk memberdayakan Guru TK Dharma Bakti Surabaya dalam menggunakan kegiatan montase sebagai alat evaluasi perkembangan motorik halus dan kreativitas anak. Metode yang digunakan meliputi pelatihan selama empat minggu yang mencakup pengenalan konsep montase, praktik pembuatan montase, dan evaluasi hasil kegiatan montase. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan bahwa terjadi peningkatan signifikan dalam pengetahuan dan keterampilan guru setelah pelatihan, dengan skor rata-rata post-test meningkat dari 60 menjadi 85. Selain itu, kegiatan montase terbukti efektif dalam mengevaluasi perkembangan motorik halus dan kreativitas anak, di mana 70% anak menunjukkan peningkatan dalam kemampuan motorik halus dan 63,33% dalam kreativitas. Guru-guru melaporkan peningkatan motivasi dan antusiasme anak dalam mengikuti kegiatan montase. Kesimpulan dari kegiatan ini adalah bahwa pelatihan dan penerapan montase sebagai alat evaluasi berhasil meningkatkan kualitas pembelajaran dan memberikan manfaat yang berkelanjutan bagi perkembangan anak usia dini di TK Dharma Bakti Surabaya. Disarankan untuk melanjutkan program pelatihan serupa di sekolah-sekolah lain dan melakukan evaluasi jangka panjang untuk memastikan keberlanjutan dampak positif.Abstract. This community service activity aims to empower the teachers of TK Dharma Bakti Surabaya in using collage activities (montase) as an evaluation tool for fine motor skills and children's creativity development. The method used includes a four-week training program covering the introduction of the collage concept, hands-on collage making, and evaluation of the collage activities' outcomes. The results showed a significant increase in teachers' knowledge and skills after the training, with the average post-test score rising from 60 to 85. Additionally, the collage activities proved effective in assessing the development of fine motor skills and creativity, with 70% of children showing improvement in fine motor skills and 63.33% in creativity. Teachers reported increased motivation and enthusiasm among children in participating in the collage activities. The conclusion of this activity is that the training and implementation of collage as an evaluation tool successfully enhanced the quality of learning and provided sustainable benefits for early childhood development at TK Dharma Bakti Surabaya. It is recommended to continue similar training programs in other schools and conduct long-term evaluations to ensure the sustainability of the positive impacts.

Abstract

This community service attempts to explore the use of augmented reality (AR) in how teachers in Paciran can be well known to introduce new vocabulary to students right there. This is a qualitative study with the data taken from both surely by distributing the questionnaires both to the students and the teachers. The questionnaires to the students concern the use of AR in their learning of English while the questionnaires to the teachers is related to the use of AR in their schools and the teachers’ engagement in this AR for their classes. The data is also taken from the interview to the English teachers about the use of AR in learning English. Sifter all the data triangulated from the students and the teachers, they will be decoded and determined into the themes. Besides that, they are also presented in tables. Finally, the inferences can be done for making the conclusion. Based on the results of the training and application experiments to students, each teacher and student agreed that AR media had a positive impact on English learning.
