Abstract

This study were aimed to find out the types of teachers’ written feedback in writing which given by the teachers for grade 10, to find out the reason why teacher used those types of written feedbacks on students’ writing and also to find out the students’ response to the teacher’s written feedbacks on students’ writing of grade 10 students in SMA YAPIM Taruna Sei Rotan. This research used descriptive qualitative method and the data were collected through documentation and interview. The data collected were analyzed qualitatively. The findings found that there were two types of feedbacks namely, direct written feedback and indirect written feedback. There were 59 direct feedbacks (52%) out of 114 total feedbacks. Meanwhile, indirect feedback with 55 un-coded direct feedbacks (48%) and in this case, teacher did not use coded indirect feedback because the teacher did not understand about the codes. The reason why teacher used those kinds of written feedback on students’ writing was because it could make the students have more vocabularies. In conclusion, teacher’s written feedbacks were important to made students aware of making mistake on their writing and the students knew about their mistake easily and their writing will be better because they learn from the mistakes. In this case, most of the students felt happy when their teacher gave a correction on their writing. The students said that direct feedback was more effective than indirect feedback because they felt confuse about what the correct word is. By using the direct feedback, the students can have more vocabularies on their next writing. The findings suggested that English teachers was expected to provide a clear description of feedback on writing, especially how students perceive and interpret the feedback given.Key words: Feedback, Teacher’s Written Feedback, Students’ Writing

Abstract

The objective of this study were to  find out the dominant types of Theme and Rheme used in students’ writing in Science and Social Class and to describe the Theme and Rheme realized in students’ writing in Science and Social Class. Theme is what the writer taking about and rheme was this was what writer saying about and common used in the text. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The subject of this study was students’ writing of Recount Text from tenth grade of Science and Social class in SMA Kartika 1-2 Medan. The data were collected from the students’ writing. From the research, it was found all the kinds of theme: topical, textual, interpersonal, marked and unmarked theme were found. And the most dominant kind of theme was marked theme and topical theme.The Theme realization pattern were found in students’ writing of recount text in both Science and Social class namely, topical theme, textual-topical theme and interpersonal-topical theme. While topical-textual-interpersonal was occured in this research simultaneously.Keywords: Theme and Rheme, Students’ Writing, Different Objects.

Abstract

This study aimed at identifying the needs of grade eight students of SMP Negeri 8 Medan in learning reading English using website and concerns on how web-based reading learning materials are developed for grade VIII students of junior high school.  The nature of this study is Research and Development (R & D). The steps were conducting the needs analysis, writing the course grid, storyboarding, writing the first draft, obtaining the experts’ judgments, revising the first draft, and finally writing the final draft. This study involved 32 students of the eight grade students of SMP Negeri 8 Medan as the research subjects. The instruments for collecting the data were questionnaires (needs analysis questionnaire and expert judgment questionnaires). The results of the needs analysis questionnaire were analyzed using percentage and the expert judgment were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Data got from the result of need analysis was being the basis in developing the product. The website was divided into five pages: Home, Start Up, Your Focus, Your Activity, and Grammar Corner. Then, based on the expert judgment, the website are appropriate for the grade eight students of junior high school. It was proved by the mean value of 4.2 for web based materials which cover the appropriateness of content, language, and presentation, and 4.5 for the website.Key words: Research and Development (R&D), Website, Reading Materials, Junior High School
