Abstract

Recognizing the significance of cultural content in language learning materials, this research undertakes a systematic analysis to evaluate the representation in the textbook Esensi Bahasa Inggris. Using qualitative content analysis method, this research dives into the cultural themes, topics, and perspectives presented in the Esensi Bahasa Inggris textbooks. However, the findings intended to understand how well ELT textbooks accommodate the diverse cultural backgrounds and identities of students, providing valuable insights for improving the cultural relevance and usefulness of language teaching materials in senior high school classrooms. The data sheet adopted from Cortazzi (1999) & Byram (1993) was used for the instrumentation. The result show cultural content with the highest frequency is Source Culture with 57% Then, it followed by International Culture which has 28%. And Target Culture shows that only 15% in total. However, the target culture also play an important to make students get used to recognising the English in its original form.

Abstract

One of the main aspects that must be learned by English learners is vocabulary. In Indonesia, students' vocabulary knowledge is still low. It is because students do not learn vocabulary too deliberately in English classrooms. Semantic mapping strategy is one of the strategies for learning vocabulary that can develop students’ vocabulary. This study aims to explore semantic mapping strategy in learning vocabulary from students’ perceptions. The participants of this study were 9 students of 11th grade students of Islamic senior high school, five participants will be interviewed and the data will be analyzed qualitatively. The results showed that the students revealed positive perceptions in terms of emotions and attitudes. Most students felt semantic mapping is exciting and gave benefits for them such as can recall their past vocabulary, and extend their vocabulary including giving them knowledge of the word classes. However, there were also some students who have negative emotions and attitudes toward semantic mapping, but the emotions and attitudes of students are more towards the positive.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the implementation of Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) strategy in teaching reading comprehension with the type of text being used is Procedure Text with the students’ reaction and response as well. This study used descriptive case study, which is a qualitative research. The participants of this study were 35 vocational high school students in 10th grade with culinary art major. Data collection techniques that researchers will use are observation checklist & interviews. This study will use thematic analysis from Braun & Clarke (2006) to analyze the data. The results of this study were Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) strategy has been well-implemented in teaching reading comprehension with Procedure Text and the student responses at the time of implementation varied.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out the values of Pancasila students and how these values are represented in the English for Nusantara textbook. This study uses a qualitative approach with content analysis method. The subjects in this study were pictures and conversation scripts in English for Nusantara textbooks. In obtaining data, the writer uses a checklist as an instrument. The author uses the values of the Pancasila student profile set by the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia, which forming a Pancasila student profile is one of the objectives of Merdeka curriculum. In the conversation script, 5 of 6 values are found, the values are represented explicitly through pictures by 95.35% and implicitly through elliciting conditions by 4.65%. Meanwhile in pictures, 6 of 6 values are found. The values represented explicitly through literal by 34.2% and implicitly through elliciting conditions by 57.9% and resultant actions by 7.9%. The results of this study are expected to be useful for teachers for determining learning sources, students, and further research.
