Abstract

Background: Secondary infection of traumatic ulcer can be caused by Streptococcus mutans. Black seed oil emulgel (Nigella sativa L.) has a saponin that has antibacterial effect on Streptococcus mutans growth. The purpose of this research for know the antibacterial effect of black seed oil emulgel (Nigella sativa L.) on Streptococcus mutans growth in vitro.Method: Experimental laboratory in vitro was held using post-test only control group design. There are four groups: negative control group and black seed oil emulgel in 5%, 7%, and 10%. Disk diffusion method was used in this research. Data analyzed by Anova test.Result: The result indicates some significant effect of black seed oil emulgel on Streptococcus mutans growth from Anova test 0,000(<0,05).Conclusion: It can be concluded that there is antibacterial effect on black seed oil emulgel to Streptococcus mutans growth.

Abstract

Background: Periodontal disease is common in Indonesia, especially periodontitis, with a prevalence of 74.1%. One of the main etiologies of periodontitis is Porphyromonas gingivalis which colonizes dental plaque in the stages of secondary colonization and maturation. Pluchea indica leaves contain active substances with antibacterial properties, including flavonoids, tannins, alkaloids, saponin, and atsiri oil which can be used as additional pharmacotherapeutic therapy in the treatment of periodontitis. The gel preparation has good dispersion, practical, easy to apply. Aim the study to specify the effectiveness of Pluchea indica extract gel 40%, 60% and 80% against the growth of Porphyromonas gingivalis. Method: This research employed an in vitro experimental post-test control design. Thirty samples were split into five groups: the 40%, 60%, and 80% concentrations of the Pluchea indica leaves gel, positive control using metronidazole gel, and negative control. Samples underwent 48 hours of incubation. After being administered a Pluchea indica leaves gel, the diffusion method is used to determine the sensitivity of the test bacteria to antibacterial. Result: The diameter of the inhibition zone formed by Pluchea indica extract gel group with a concentration of around 80% was in the category very strong. Based on the results of the Tukey post-hoc test p

Abstract

Introduction: Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the supporting structures of the teeth. Due to its often asymptomatic progression in early stages, timely diagnosis is frequently challenging. Objective: This study aimed to assess the impact of non-surgical and surgical periodontal treatments on the Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL) among individuals diagnosed with periodontitis. Methods: An observational analytic study with a cross-sectional design was conducted using a pre-test and post-test group approach. The study involved 100 patients aged 18–60 years who met predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria and underwent periodontal therapy either non-surgical or surgical at Sultan Agung Islamic Dental and Oral Hospital (RSIGM) between August and December 2024. The OHIP-14sp questionnaire was used to measure OHRQoL across seven domains using a Likert scale. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired t-tests to evaluate differences between pre- and post-treatment scores. Results: A marked reduction in OHIP-14sp scores was observed across all domains following treatment. The most pronounced improvements occurred in the domains of social disability (−46.2%) and functional limitation (−45.1%). Overall, the total OHIP-14sp score improved by 43.9%. All domains exhibited statistically significant differences between baseline and follow-up scores (p < 0.001). Conclusion: The findings indicated that both non-surgical and surgical periodontal therapies contributed significantly to enhancing patients’ quality of life by alleviating physical discomfort and improving psychological and social well-being.
