Abstract

This research aimed to describe the classes struggle conducted by the five main characters of Alita: Battle Angel film (Dr. Ido, Alita, Dr. Chiren, Hugo, and Nova) by using two theories of Tyson about social class and class struggle. The form of research design was qualitative with content analysis as its approach. Words in the forms of narrations and dialogues were the data of this research and taken from Alita: Battle Angel film script. The findings of this research showed three different social classes identified from the five main characters. (1) Dr. Ido, Alita, and Dr. Chiren were identified to come from the middle class. (2) Hugo was identified from the low class. (3) Nova was identified as the one from the upper class. Furthermore, the forms of class struggled conducted by each character was different. Yet, this finding did not apply to Dr. Ido character since he did not conduct any form of class struggle due to his desire of wanting to live in Iron City only. On one hand, for Alita, Dr. Chiren, and Hugo posed one similar strong reason of conducting their class struggle which was that to change their life condition into the better ones by living in Zalem. On the other hand, Nova’s reason of conducting his class struggle because he wanted to defend the status quo as the highest leader of Zalem.

Abstract

This study examined Serena novel written by Ron Rash as the object of the research. The aimed of this research was to find out the portrayal of class distinction and labor exploitation in the novel. To achieve the purposes of the study, the research applied Marx’s Social Class and Exploitation theory, and International Labor Organization or ILO’s Indicators of Labor Exploitation. This research used descriptive qualitative research method and Marxist criticism to analyze the social issue of class exploitation reflected in the novel. The data in this research were words, phrases, sentences and paragraphs that indicated social class and exploitation. The result of this research showed two social classes, they were bourgeoisie and proletariat. Bourgeoisie referred to Serena, Pemberton, Buchanan and Wilkie who were owner of timber business, while proletariat were the workers whose life only depended on bourgeoisie for employment. Meanwhile, there were four forms of labor exploitation. First was excessive working hour, like worked eleven hours shift a day and only fifteen minutes break. Second was low salary, like cheap labor and inappropriate wages. Third was bad living condition, like limited and uncomfortable living condition, live in cheap and ragged wooden boxcar. And fourth was hazardous work, like no safety equipment, manual and dangerous tools, forced to work in moody ground and against extreme cold.Keyword: Marxist criticism, Capitalism, Class distinction, Exploitation, Mode of production.

Abstract

This research studied the character of two leaders in Transformers movie.  There are six movies of Transformers, but the writer only took four movies squeal as the object research is because the changed story and character in the fifth and the sixth movies. The subject of this research is Optimus and Megatron character. There are two objectives in this research, the first is the leadership of two leaders and the second is the character of two leaders. The writer used the leadership theory into three categories the first category is Dilts’ model of leadership, the second category is Davis’ form of leadership theory and the third category is Stogdill’s characteristic of leadership. Meanwhile to find the character of two leaders, the writer used Johnson’s indirect characterization theory that consists of five methods namely is speech, thoughts, effect to other characters, action and looks. This research is categorized as descriptive qualitative that consists to data in the form of words and sentences. The data are dialog of script in movie.  The results of this study, the writer found the different leadership and character two leaders. The writer found their characters and leaderships by seeing the interaction between leader and follower in movies. Optimus Prime’s leadership categorizes in macro leadership, leadership positive form and all of leadership characteristic. Optimus characters defined as moral character. Meanwhile Megatron’s leadership categorizes in meta leadership, leadership negative form and all of leadership characteristic. Megatron characters defined as immoral character.

Abstract

This study examines the symbols that used, the meanings of symbol, and the roles of symbol in The Queen of Spades short story. To identify the symbol, the researcher used the theory by Griffith; public symbol and private symbol. To reveal the meanings of symbol, the researcher used the theory of ‘symbolic reference’ by Whitehead. Then, to find out the roles of symbol in building the story, the researcher analyzed through plot, character, setting, and theme in the story. The method of this study used descriptive qualitative method and the data of this study based on words, sentences, and narration which reflected symbols throughout the story. Furthermore, the result of the research showed cards of three, seven, aces categorized as public symbol and the queen of spades categorized as private symbol. The number three reflected to love triangle which happened between Hermann, Lizaveta, and Lizaveta’a husband. Then, seven reflected Hermann who obsessed to know the secret of lucky card. At last, aces reflected to karma that must be accepted by Hermann and the Countess. Meanwhile, the queen of spades as private symbol reflected to the Countess Anna Fedotovna and as a symbol of the key issue on the secret of lucky cards in the story. Then, the roles of symbols reflected through plot that showed to express the disquieting effect, character that showed to express the strength qualities, setting that showed to express the strength atmosphere, and theme that showed to express the wisdom lessons.

Abstract

The study aims to identify the types of rejective behaviours portrayed in Matt Ruff’s Lovecraft Country novel and to discuss the portrayal of African-American characters’ responses to rejective behaviours. This research is a descriptive research that uses a mimetic approach and multicultural criticism to conduct the investigation. The data source of the study is Matt Ruff’s Lovecraft Country novel. The data are acquired from the narration and dialogues related to the mistreatments toward the African-American characters and their responses that are suitable to the criteria of Allport’s theory of rejective behaviours and Mellor’s responses to racism theory. The results show that verbal rejection (antilocution), discrimination, and physical attack are all portrayed in this novel albeit with different frequencies for each African-American character.  It is also discovered that the characters have depicted defensive response, controlled response, and confrontational response in dealing with rejective behaviours.

Abstract

This research aimed to reveal the characters’ personality traits by reference to Costa and McCrae (1992) through one of the characterization devices called soliloquy and knowing about the role of characters soliloquy in A Midsummer Night’s Dream drama. The method of this research was qualitative content analysis. The data of this research were the characters’ soliloquies in the drama. After analyzing, the result showed that soliloquies had important roles in A Midsummer Night’s Dream drama. The roles were to reveal about the characters development and the drama plot; although there was no narration in the drama, but soliloquies could show and describe the characters’ personality traits, each character had one till five personality traits through telling their true thoughts and intentions by using soliloquies in A Midsummer Night’s Dream drama. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memaparkan ciri-ciri kepribadian berdasarkan teori Costa dan McCrae (1992) melalui salah satu jenis karakterisasi yaitu solilokui sekaligus untuk mengetahui peranan solilokui pada karakter dalam drama A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Metode yang digunakan untuk penelitian ini adalah kualitatif konten analisis. Data yang digunakan berupa solilokui dari tiap-tiap karakter di dalam drama. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa solilokui  memiliki peran penting pada drama A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Peran penting solilokui di dalam drama tersebut adalah untuk mengungkapkan perkembangan karakter dan jalan cerita; meski tidak ada narasi namun solilokui dapat menunjukkan dan menjelaskan ciri-ciri kepribadian karakter di dalam drama. Masing-masing karakter memiliki satu hingga lima ciri-ciri kepribadian melalui penyampaian pola pikir dan tujuan mereka yang sebenarnya melalui penggunaan solilokui di drama A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Abstract

This research focuses on the journey of Magnus Chase’s character as the mythical hero in The Sword of Summer novel by Rick Riordan. This research has two purposes. The first is to identify the stages of Monomyth that appear in the journey of Magnus Chase’s character in The Sword of Summer novel. The second is to identify kind of Mythoi of The Sword of Summer novel. The researcher applied Joseph Campbell’s theory of Monomyth and Northrop Frye’s theory of Mythoi to answer the research questions. There are two results of this research. First, Magnus Chase’s character undergoes fifteen out of seventeen stages that proper with Campbell’s Monomyth. These fifteen stages are The Call to Adventure, Refusal of the Call, Supernatural Aid, The Crossing of the First Threshold, The Belly of the Whale, The Road of Trials, The Meeting with the Goddess, Woman as Tempress, Atonement with the Father, Apotheosis, The Ultimate Boon, Refusal of the Return, The Crossing of the Return Threshold, Master of Two World and Freedom to live. Second, the kind of Mythoi of The Sword of Summer novel is The Mythos of Summer: Romance. That is because Magnus Chase undergoes all the phases of The Mythos of Summer: Romance. These phases are the emerge of the hero, the innocent youth of the hero, the completion of an ideal, the theme of maintaining the hero’s integrity, the innocent youth of the hero and the end of the adventure. Penelitian ini berfokus pada perjalanan karakter Magnus Chase sebagai pahlawan mitos dalam novel The Sword of Summer karya Rick Riordan. Penelitian ini memiliki dua tujuan. Tujuan pertama adalah mengidentifikasi tahapan Monomyth yang muncul dalam perjalanan karakter Magnus Chase dalam novel The Sword of Summer. Tujuan kedua adalah mengidentifikasi jenis Mythoi dari novel The Sword of Summer. Peneliti menerapkan teori Monomyth yang dipopulerkan oleh Joseph Campbell dan teori Mythoi yang diperkenalkan oleh Northrop Frye untuk menjawab pertanyaan penelitian. Terdapat dua hasil dari penelitian ini. Pertama, karakter Magnus Chase mengalami lima belas dari tujuh belas tahapan yang sesuai dengan teori Monomyth dari Joseph Campbell. Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find the level of racism that happened to African American as seen in Selma movie. Further, the other purpose is to give the reflection about the effect of the racism toward African-American people as depicted in the movie. This research focused to examine the racism by using Jones’ and Day’s theory about the level of racism and on how the effect of racism itself. Further, the researcher used qualitative-descriptive method and Mikos’ data analysis for the movie. In this movie, the researcher finds the three levels of racism have appeared. The racisms are institutionalized racism, personally mediated racism and internalized racism. The first level which is institutionalized racism is marked by the legitimize and systematic intimidation in voting booths. Further, this racism gives positive and negative effect.  Secondly, the personally mediated racism also appeared and it is shown by the limitedness of public access, police brutality and everyday avoidance towards black people. Thus, personally mediated racism also gives positive and negative effect. The last level of racism which appeared in this movie is internalized racism. This racism marked by the acceptance of stigma from white people to black people. Additionally, this racism only gives negative effect because it makes the victim of racism felt insecure, unworthy, and disbelief towards themselves.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research analyzed translation techniques used in the translation of interrogative utterances by Little Prince’s character in the English novel The Little Prince into Indonesian Pangeran Cilik by Antoine De Saint-Exupery. The researcher used the theory of translation techniques by Molina and Albir (2002). This research was categorized as qualitative research.  The result of the research showed there were 12 techniques used in the data. They were, namely, adaptation, borrowing, compensation, description, discursive creative, established equivalent, linguistic amplification, linguistic compression, modulation, reduction, and transposition. The total data were 97 interrogative utterances by Little Prince’s character.  The total data of each techniques were as follows: (1) adaptation occurred 3 times, (2) amplification occurred 3 times, (3) borrowing occurred 1 time, (4) compensation occurred 3 times, (5) Description occurred 2 times, (6) discursive creation occurred 4 times, (7) established equivalent occurred 6 times, (8) literal translation occurred 38 times, (9) modulation occurred 6 times, (10) reduction occurred 23 times, (11) transposition occurred 8 times. The researcher found the dominant technique used by the translator was literal translation with total of 38 findings.Key words: Translation, Translation Technique, Interrogative Utterances, The Little Prince, Pangeran Cilik ABSTRAKPenelitian ini menganalisis teknik penerjemahan yang digunakan dalam penerjemahan ujaran interogatif tokoh Pangeran Kecil dalam novel Bahasa Inggris The Little Prince ke Bahasa Indonesia Pangeran Cilik karya Antoine De Saint-Exupery. Peneliti menggunakan teori teknik penerjemahan oleh Molina dan Albir (2002). Penelitian ini termasuk penelitian kualitatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan ada 12 teknik yang digunakan dalam data. yaitu, adaptasi, peminjaman, kompensasi, deskripsi, kreasi diskursif, bentuk padanan, amplifikasi linguistik, kompresi linguistik, modulasi, reduksi, dan transposisi. Total data adalah 97 ujaran interogatif dari karakter Pangeran Kecil. Total data dari masing-masing teknik adalah sebagai berikut: (1) adaptasi ditemukan 3 kali,(2) amplifikasi (3) peminjaman ditemukan 1 kali, (3) kompensasi ditemukan 3 kali, (4) deskripsi ditemukan 2 kali, (5) kreasi diskursif ditemukan 4 kali , (6) bentuk padanan ditemukan 6 kali, (9) terjemahan literal ditemukan 38 kali, (10) modulasi muncul 6 kali, (11) reduksi muncul 23 kali, (12) transposisi ditemukan 8 kali. Peneliti menemukan teknik yang dominan digunakan oleh penerjemah adalah terjemahan literal dengan total 38 temuan.Kata kunci:  Penerjemahan, Teknik Penerjemahan, Ujaran Interogatif, The Little Prince, Pangeran Cilik

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe collective unconscious concept of Jungian critic contains archetypes that are unique part of the theory of human personality. The archetypes can be found in R and Julie character in Warm Bodies film. The purpose of this study is to find out some archetypes based on Jungian critics that related to both characters. Analytical psychology theory by Carl G Jung was used as the main theory to find out the archetypes that related to both characters. This study is categorized as literary criticism since this study is emphasized on the analysis of literary work. The primary data of this study are collected from Jonathan Levine’s Warm Bodies film. The result of this study is showed there were six archetypes found in the film. They were persona, shadow, anima, animus, hero, and self-archetypes. Keywords: Jungian psychoanalysis, archetypes, Warm Bodies film ABSTRAKKonsep kumpulan bawah sadar dari kritik Jung mengandung pola dasar yang merupakan bagian yang unik dari teori kepribadian manusia. Pola dasar ini dapat di temukan di dalam karakter R dan Julie dalam film Warm Bodies. Tujuan dari penelitian ini untuk menemukan beberapa pola dasar bedasarkan dari kritik jung yang terkait dengan kedua karakter. Psikologi analisis teori dari Carl G Jung digunakan sebagai teori utama untuk menemukan pola dasar yang terkait dengan kedua karakter. Penelitian ini di kategorikan sebagai kritik sastra sejak penelitian ini menekankan pada Analisa dari kerja sastra. Data utama dari penelitian ini di kumpulkan dari film Jonathan levine Warm Bodies. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ada 6 pola dasar yang ditemukan di dalam film. 6 pola dasar itu adalah persona, shadow, anima, animus, hero, dan pola dasar self. Kata kunci : psikoanalisis Jung, pola dasar, film Warm Bodies
