Abstract

The timing of artificial insemination relies largely on behavioral observation of estrus. The problemfaced is that not all cattle shows signs of estrus significantly, which affect the accuracy of insemination, and therefore, the success rate of Artificial Insemination is less than 50%. Recently, the determination ofestradiol levels as an indicator of estrus is done by observation of physical signs and doing ELISA test, which is expensive and provide longer time. In order to solve these problems, a tool estrus detector is madenamely Electronic Nose (EN). Determination of estrus with EN is cheaper because it does not need to usecomplexmaterials, just only use the samples. Mechanism of action of EN is using a sensor that is vaporized, while animals estrus will emit pheromones that are vaporized. Theaim of this study was to determinewhether the stage of estrus can be detected by using EN. Urine of female Ongole Crossbred which maintainedin Kuwang, district of Cangkringan, Yogyakarta, with BCS of 3 was used in this research. The sample wascollected shortly before injection of dinoprost as estrus synchronization then it repeated when cattle got estrus phase. The urinary sample of the estrus cattle was sensitive to methane, propane, butane, whereasin non-estrus cattle, besides the three of these component (methane, propane, butane), sensor was alsocaptured hydrogen sulfide. Furthermore, our electronic nose had been able to distinguish estrus phase andnon-estrus based on domain area. Thus, the Electronic Nose is very prospect used as a detector of estrus incattle. Hydrogen disulfide could possibly be used as an indicator comparison between cow estrus and nonestrus.

Abstract

Sub-clinical mastitis causes decrease in milk production and milk quality. It is not only happen tomilking dairies, but also happens to dairy buffalos and goats. The objective of this study is to know thedifferences between IPB-1 mastitis test (IMT) and Breed method to diagnose sub-clinical mastitis ondairy buffaloes and goats. Fourty two samples of buffalo’s milk and 20 samples of goat’s milk were used tosomatic cell count (SCC) with direct and indirect method. Direct method was performed by counting themilk’s SCC with Breed method, and indirect method was performed by observing the reaction betweenIMT reagent and milk. The results showed that 28 from 42 samples (66.67%) of buffalo’s milk and 13 from20 samples (65%) of goat’s milk tested with Breed method came from the herds which suffered from subclinicalmastitis and 27 from 42 samples (64.28%) and 10 from 20 samples (50%) of goat’s milk testedwith IMT showed positive reaction. This research also showed that IMT has sensitivity of 96% and specivicityof 100% for buffalo’s milk and sensitivity of 71% and specivicity of 100% for goat’s milk. IMT can be usedto obtain fast result for sub-clinical mastitis diagnosis and it is faster and easier for buffalo’s and goat’smilk.

Abstract

Hematology value is important to evaluate individual health status. This study was purposed to observe the hematological values of male and female Cynopterus titthaecheilus. The study was conducted on 16 C. titthaecheilus (six adult males, six adult females and four juveniles) to study the haematological profiles. Blood samples were taken using tuberculin needles and analyzed by hematology analyzer for hematological values. Females C. titthaecheilus had a higher number of white blood cells than the males, but no differences in the white blood cells differential. Males C. titthaecheilus had a higher number of platelets than the females. Generally, the juveniles had a higher number of leucocytes as well as number of platelets than the adults. Based on the stress index value, it was concluded that young bats had a lower stress level compared to adult bats.
