Abstract

Purpose – This research aims to analyze the information literacy abilities of eighth-grade students at Pademawu 1 State Junior High School in the context of learning science in the era of Society 5.0. The researchers also examine each indicator used to measure information literacy skills to provide insights for educators on how to improve these skills in the future.Method – The study employs a survey design, which is analyzed quantitatively and descriptively. It focuses on the information literacy skills of junior high school students and the role of education in preparing them for Society 5.0. The data is supported by a literature review that includes relevant research and other supporting sources.Findings – The results show that students' information literacy skills are generally good. However, there are deficiencies in the indicators for assessing and analyzing information, and the use of information is rated as only sufficient. This is because the activity of analyzing information requires high-level thinking skills/critical thinking, but school questions tend to train memory skills, leading to underdeveloped critical thinking skills. Additionally, internal, and external factors also influence this low ability. The ability to use information is low because learning is still teacher-centered, with students being less active in the learning process. A potential solution is to employ learning methods that develop high-level skills and are student-centered. Research Implications – This research can help educators understand the analysis of students' information literacy abilities. However, the study has not been empirically tested, so further research is needed to determine effective strategies to improve information literacy skills, such as appropriate learning methods, to enhance overall literacy skills.

Abstract

Purpose – This research aims to analyze the critical thinking skills of class VIII-I students at SMP Negeri 1 Sampang before and after implementing Discovery Learning which is stimulated by microlearning. Apart from that, this research was conducted to increase knowledge regarding efficient learning models used to improve critical thinking skills.Method – This research uses a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental design research type. The design used is One Group Pretest-Posttest Design. Data were analyzed using quantitative descriptions with the N-Gain data analysis technique which was then categorized using the criteria table by Hake 1998.Findings – Based on research results, the video-oriented microlearning Discovery Learning model can improve students' critical thinking abilities. This can be seen from the N-Gain results on three indicators which have increased to the high category, namely the basic support indicators, prior clarification, and strategy and tactics. However, there are still two indicators that have increased only with moderate criteria, namely the basic clarification and inference indicators. So further research is needed to find out how long it takes to apply the model until all critical thinking indicators are in the high category. Research Implications – The application of microlearning to the Discovery Learning model stimulation provides excellent implications in increasing student activity in science learning. The research results show that the use of microlearning videos in the Discovery Learning stimulation model is effective in improving junior high school students' critical thinking abilities. It is recommended that further research optimize the learning process and conduct research in more than three meetings for maximum results. This model can also be used in other chapters and subjects that require critical thinking skills.

Abstract

Purpose – This study focuses on assessing the improvement in learning motivation of class VIII students at a junior high school in Surabaya after applying a microlearning-based guided inquiry orientation model. The research also evaluates different aspects of motivation to measure overall learning motivation, aiming to offer recommendations for educators to enhance future teaching methods and boost student motivation.Method – This study employed a one-group pretest-posttest design, concentrating on the increase in learning motivation among junior high school students through the application of a microlearning-based guided inquiry model. The data was collected using a questionnaire consisting of 20 statements, focusing on various aspects of learning motivation.Findings – The study results indicated that implementing the guided inquiry model with a microlearning orientation successfully increased learning motivation, as evidenced by the N-Gain test, which showed an average score of 0.70 in the moderate category. However, the lowest improvement was observed in the self-confidence aspect. This was partly because students' self-confidence had already developed prior to the application of the guided inquiry model with a microlearning orientation. Additionally, the low results in self-confidence were attributed to the teacher-centered learning approach, which reduced students' engagement. A possible solution is to adopt student-centered learning methods that foster motivation. Research Implications – This research aids educators in analyzing students' learning motivation. The implementation of effective learning methods is reflected in improvements across all aspects of motivation, with moderate to high levels. The integration of a microlearning-based guided inquiry model positively impacts students' motivation, as demonstrated by their attitudes toward various motivational aspects.

Abstract

Purpose – This research aims to describe the increase in students' problem-solving abilities after implementing learning using the Socio Scientific Issues approach.Method – The research was conducted using a pre-experimental design with a one group pretest and posttest design. This research adopted the 2012 OECD problem-solving ability indicators with the research subjects consisting of 33 grade 7 students at MTsN Gresik. The data collection method used was the test method and analyzed using quantitative descriptive. Research shows an increase in problem solving abilities analyzed using the N-Gain test.Findings – The research results show that the N-Gain value for the Exploring and Understanding indicator is 0.89, which is included in the high category. The Representing and Formulating indicator has an N-Gain value of 0.54, which is included in the medium category. The Planning and Executing indicator show an N-Gain value of 0.64, also included in the medium category. Meanwhile, the Monitoring and Reflecting indicator has an N-Gain value of 0.53, included in the medium category. Research Implications – The use of problem orientation and this learning model can be applied to science material from other chapters which also presents controversial social issues and requires the involvement of students' analytical and critical thinking skills.

Abstract

Purpose – This research aims to describe the initial scientific literacy skills of students at SMP Sidoarjo. The researcher also reviewed each indicator used to measure scientific literacy skills to provide educators with ideas on how to improve these skills in the future.Method – This type of research is a survey design. The data analysis technique used is quantitative descriptive. The science literacy ability test designed consists of nine questions adopted from the PISA 2015 science literacy test questions with three indicators. The indicators used are indicators of aspects of science literacy competency. Researchers also examine each indicator used to measure science literacy skills.Findings – The results of the study showed that students' scientific literacy skills were generally good. However, there were deficiencies in the indicators of evaluating and designing scientific investigations which were considered low. This was due to the low knowledge of content, procedures, and epistemics of students resulting in a lack of students' ability to design and evaluate scientific investigations. In addition, internal and external factors also contributed to this low ability. The solution that can be done is to use learning methods that develop high-level skills and are student-centered. Research Implications – This research can be useful for educators to know the profile of students' scientific literacy. Because this study has not been conducted empirically, additional research is needed to find useful methods to improve scientific literacy skills. These strategies can include appropriate learning methods to improve overall scientific literacy skills.
