Abstract

Gender issue in a pesantren (Islamic Boarding House) is a part of larger gender issues in Indonesia, either in education or religion. The main indicator of gender issue in pesantren is a striking gap betweenmen and women. Themes related to this issue actually are not new for novels in Indonesia. Some novelsrelated to pesantren usually portray women as helplessness, subordinate, inferior, and marginalized. However, in Perempuan Berkalung Sorban (PBS) novel, the author tried to empower women throughhis writings. Women in PBS novel was portrayed as smart, brave, and critical towards pesantren’shegemony such as power relation between santri (students) and kiai (teachers), the understanding ofclassical books (Kitab Kuning), social relations between men and women in pesantren, and so forth

Abstract

The eco-critical film, Seorang Kambing (Tunggung Banjaransari, 2016), is part of eco-cinema, which mainly talks about problems of water crisis throughout its narrative. Eco-cinema has not only audio-visual presentations regarding environmental issues, but also functionalizes aesthetic choices, which could encourage viewers to have mindful and critical awareness of ecological problems. This article is aimed to examine how the film narrative of Seorang Kambing reproduces gender problems around the issue of water crisis. This article uses Stella Bruzzi’s (2013) concept of masculine aethetics in the cinema and the approach of eco-feminism, which critically reveals the connections between the oppressions of the nature and those toward women. By applying narrative analysis, which is presented by Helen Fulton (2005), this article reveals that masculine aethetics are functionalized predominantly in the film to narrate the problems of water crisis. Paradoxically, Seorang Kambing, as an intended eco-critical film, seems to simply overlook the significant roles of women around the issue of water crisis. In addition, the film reproduces the exclusion of women from the discourse of water crisis.

Abstract

The emergence of digital technology has significantly transformed the lending landscape. One example of the rising influence of digital lending practice targeting university students in Indonesia is Cicil. This digital-based lending platform provides a Peer-to-Peer (P2P) lending service that aims to cater to higher education students who have been frequently excluded from various lending programs. This study explores the deep mediatization of loans within the ecosystem of digital platforms and how it transforms lending practices, as provided by Cicil. Utilizing the concept of deep mediatization by Andreas Hepp (2020) and a case study method, this study reveals that the logic of digital media has been adapted to and transformed lending practices. The practices of lending are becoming driven by datafication and connectivity between loan providers, users, and the digital platform ecosystem, leading to a spatially disembedded financial transaction and generating a sense of participatory and inclusivity in lending practices.
