Abstract

To deconstruct is to undermine a universal idea or a stable meaning. It is led by a perception in which the deconstructionists believe that theres no stable meaning because every meaning can be undermined. Related to that, this writing is analyzing a short story entitles Malin Kundang Pulang Kampung which deconstructs the legendary story Malin Kundang from West Sumatra.

Abstract

A short story By Any Other Name written by Santha Rama Rau deals with British domination over the Indians. The story tells abot Indian children who study in Anglo-Indian school, a non-boarding school with British administrators. The British headmaster of the school shows the British domination by using her power to change the names of the Indian students only because it’s hard for her to pronounce Indians’ names. Besides, Indians are labelled with negative stereotype. Indians are considered dishonest. For that reason, they are not trusted in a test and consequently are seated with a desk between each one to avoid cheating. To respond those unfair and discriminative treatments, Indians resist and oppose. Their resistance and opposition are reflected by their refusal to stay in that school and their decision to quit.

Abstract

This writing deals with a dilemma faced by Antigone on deciding what to do in response to the kings decision not to bury her brothers dead body or following her morality and conscience to conduct a burial of the brothers dead body. She finally decides to bury the dead body and face the consequence of the kings anger. As a result she has to face the punishment from the king. This writing shows that when morality guides someone, s!he should be ready to accept any consequence. Antigone s decision to oppose the king shows that obligation to obey the king is not always parallel with morality and her conscience.

Abstract

This writing deals with an analysis of a literary work entitles "The Lottery" written by Shirley Jackson. In this case, the work is analyzed deconstructively. The result shows that there are some events found which undermine the stable, universal meanings such as the concept of lottery itself which is signified very differently from the stable meaning. Besides, the pleasant atmosphere presented at the beginning of the work doesn't offer enjoyable events that follow, what makes it more astonishing is the fact that the villagers sacrifice one of them only because they get used to it and evenworse, they enjoy to sacrife one of them.

Abstract

This writing deals with an analysis of social condition of a society which is reflected in a literary work, a drama, entitles The Zoo Story written by Edward Albee. Thus, this writing analyzes the text by applying Genetic Structuralism which explores the social condition and social elements found in a text. The result shows that social class which is created by a society separates people with certain level in a society. Eventhough there’s no concrete line to show the separation, but it is felt and undergone realistically just like bars which separate animals with their different kinds in a zoo.

Abstract

This writing analyzes the relationship between one text and another, in this case poems entitle Kerendahan Hati written by Taufik Ismail and another poem entitles Be the Best of Whatever You are written by Douglas Malloch. Thus, the objective of this analysis is to show and analyze the relationship between these two texts. To reach the objective, this analysis applies intertextuality to present the relations because intertextuality believes no text is original. It is true due to the signification of a text is influenced by the signification of other text, which are the reference or quotation of the previous text.Related to that idea, this analysis will describe how Kerendahan hati is related to Be the Best of Whatever You are. Furthermore, it will be concluded which text is the source. It will prove whether Kerendahan Hati is the source which influences Be the Best of Whatever You are or vice versa.

Abstract

This writing compares elements of deux ex machina in two folklores entitle “Pak Belalang” and “ Rumpelstiltskin.” Thus, the objective of the research is to describe and to analyze the similarities and differences of the elements of deux ex machina used by eastern and western texts. To reach the aim, this analysis uses comparative analysis to compare the two folklores. Related to that, this analysis applies descriptive analysis in which the result of the analysis will be described clearly. From the description, it will show how the eastern and western’s texts use deux ex machina as one of the elements of conflict which varies the text.

Abstract

This writing analyzes a short story entitles The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas written by Ursula Le Guin which highlights the elements of Utopia and Dystopia found in a society as reflected in the text such as the happiness, cheerfulness which are almost perfect. Besides, the feeling of secure is also felt by the inhabitants of Omelas so that they don’t need a government to manage their life. On the contrary, the element of dystopia is ironic, in which the happiness felt by the people is paid by a little child who is locked in dark, small room. This child is victimized to guarantee the perfect life of the people in Omelas. Consequently, those who can’t accept this reality decide to leave Omelas, they are the ones who walk away from Omelas. Related to that, this analysis applies descriptive analysis in which the result will be explained descriptively. From the description, it will show how the elements of Utopia and Dystopia are reflected in the life of the people in Omelas which describe the society of Omelas and its belief in Sacrificing the child for the sake of the happiness of the community.

Abstract

Abstract

This writing analyzes a lyric of a song entitled Cinderella, sung by Tata Young, a Thai-American singer in her album, I Believe which was released in 2004. The analysis focuses on how the lyric dismantles the images of women. In this case, it dismantles the images of women found in the works of fairytales which present women with certain images such as weak, passive, submissive, dependent and other weakening images. Thus, this lyric presents the images of women different from those found the fairytales.
