Abstract

Wallowing activity is thought to have some important roles in the viability of wild boars (Sus scrofa L.). The characteristics of wallow and wallowing activity can show the ability of the boars to adapt with variety environmental challenges. Study on the characteristics of wallow and wallowing activity of the boars at the Biological Education and Research Forest (HPPB) Andalas University was conducted from September to December 2012 and from April to July 2013. This study was conducted by observing the characters of five wallows, while wallowing activities at two different wallows were observed by using camera traps. The results showed that wallows were found mainly rounded in shape, located near by habitual animal path with shadowed by dense canopy. The dominant substrate of wallows is particles of gravel and coarse sand. The rubbing trees were found around the wallows. From a total 197 observation days, we found 53 video and 51 photos which indicated the wallowing activities within 26 different visiting times. Those activities occurred in the morning between 6:00 am to 09:00 am, with the temperature around the wallows was 25⁰ C. Activities performed while wallowing is rolling, standing, resting and rooting. The result of this study may suggest that wallowing activity has more important function than thermoregulation as previously suggested. Keywords:  wild boar, characteristics wallow, wallowing activity, thermoregulation.

Abstract

The communities of small terrestrial mammals are known to be affected by the forest disturbances. The investigation of small terrestrial mammals’ community in had been conducted Mount Singgalang, West Sumatra, Indonesia. Small terrestrial mammals were trapped in three different habitats; heavily disturbed, slightly disturbed and undisturbed forest. At each site, four transects were established using a total of 360 trap-night effort (120 trap-nights effort per site). We caught 37 individuals, consisted of 8 species which were included into 3 families and 3 orders. Composition and structure of the community was different among habitats. The highest diversity and abundance was found at slightly disturbed forest. In term of species composition, heavily disturbed forest was more similar to slightly disturbed forest than undisturbed forest. Crocidura neglecta and Maxomys surifer were the most tolerant species to the effect of forest disturbance. It is concluded that such differences among habitats in Mount Singgalangtend to have certain influences, although the significant difference was not found. Keywords: community, small terrestrial mammals, Mount Singgalang

Abstract

Pan traps is a popular technique for determining the diversity of pollinating insects in different settings. These traps are effective for field use and can quickly produce sample data because they are simple to operate and don't require any specific equipment to be deployed. Pan traps, however, also catch a variety of non-pollinator insects in addition to pollinating insects. In this study, the Pan traps methods were used in three different habitat types: rice-field, Acacia agroforestry and secondary forest on reclaimed coal mining site. Fourteen members of the Formicidae family with 11 species, 9 genera, 8 tribes, and 3 subfamilies were found from all of the combined traps. The most common species, with four records, was Camponotus arrogans, which was regularly found in all types of habitat. With 9 species and 14 individuals, blue pan traps caught the greatest diversity of ant species, while yellow pan traps were the least successful with one species and one individual. Comprehending the variables that impact ant diversity and abundance in various habitat types, as well as their interactions with the environment, can yield significant insights on the quality of habitats and function as markers of environmental alterations. This information is essential for the management of habitats and conservation initiatives.
