Abstract

Introduction: Adolescence is an essential period in an individual's development characterized by significant physical, emotional, and social changes. Mental, emotional, and depressive disorders are common mental health problems in adolescents and can have a severe impact on their quality of life. This study aims to examine the prevalence, risk factors, symptoms, and strategies for preventing and treating mental and emotional disorders and depression in adolescents. Methods: The design is descriptive and quantitative. Sampling was carried out using a total sampling technique on 68 nursing students. Results: Most of the respondents did not experience mental or emotional disorders, 75%, and did not experience depression, 48.5%, while those who experienced mild depression, 26.5%, moderate depression, 13.2%, and severe depression, 11.8%. Conclusions: It was found that academic pressure, family problems, bullying, and hormonal changes are some of the factors that contribute to the increased risk of mental disorders in adolescents. Symptoms that often appear include profound feelings of sadness, loss of interest or pleasure in daily activities, changes in sleep and eating patterns, and difficulty concentrating. Effective prevention and treatment strategies include mental health education, social support, psychological interventions, and if needed, medical treatment. Parents, educators, and health workers need to work together in early detection and provide appropriate support to reduce the negative impact of mental-emotional disorders and depression on adolescent development.

Abstract

Introduction: Depression is a prevalent psychological issue among the elderly, often exacerbated by isolation and various physical and mental health challenges. As a non-pharmacological intervention, music therapy has shown potential in alleviating depressive symptoms. This study examines the effectiveness of listening to nostalgic songs in reducing depression among elderly residents. Methods: This study used a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest approach. A total of 28 elderly participants who met the inclusion criteria were selected from a population of 43 individuals. The participants underwent a 20-minute intervention of listening to nostalgic songs, conducted six times over two weeks. Depression levels were measured using the Geriatric Depression Scale-15 (GDS-15) before and after the intervention. Data analysis was performed using the Wilcoxon test in SPSS version 25 to determine the significance of the intervention's effects. Results: The analysis revealed a significant reduction in depression levels after the intervention, with a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating a statistically significant difference between pretest and posttest depression scores. This finding suggests that nostalgic music therapy effectively reduces depressive symptoms among elderly participants. Conclusions: The results support the hypothesis that listening to nostalgic songs can serve as an effective intervention for reducing depression in the elderly. Nostalgic music therapy can be considered a beneficial non-pharmacological approach to enhancing the psychological well-being of elderly individuals. Future studies with control groups and larger sample sizes are recommended to validate these findings further

Abstract

Introduction: Hypertension is a significant health problem in the elderly that can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Home care has the potential to improve hypertension management in this population. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of home care in managing hypertension in the elderly. Materials and Methods: This study uses a mixed-methods design with quantitative and qualitative approaches. Quantitatively, quasi-experimental studies were carried out with intervention and control groups. The intervention group received home care services, including education, blood pressure monitoring, and medication adherence support. The control group received standard treatment. Blood pressure data were measured at the beginning of the study. Qualitatively, in-depth interviews were conducted with the elderly and home care nurses to understand their experiences and perceptions. Results: Quantitative results showed a significant decrease in systolic and diastolic blood pressure in the intervention group compared to the control group after 6 months (p < 0.05). Qualitative results revealed that the elderly felt more motivated and better-understood hypertension management thanks to home care support. Home care nurses also reported increased medication adherence and positive lifestyle changes in the elderly. Conclusions: Home care is effective in improving hypertension management in the elderly. These services provide comprehensive support, including education, monitoring, and motivation, which contribute to lowering blood pressure and improving the quality of life of the elderly
