Abstract

Soil erosion is one of the biggest enemies for farmers in Indonesia. The speed of erosion that cannot be matched by the soil formation that occurs can cause serious global problems such as the land crisis. Strengthening the soil is one option to prevent erosion, one method is through planting plants. A strategic study and design is needed to compile appropriate activities such as an effective planting system. Therefore, we are holding the “Tebar Wangi” activity, which is a series of vetiver planting activities to overcome erosion and landslides. Vetiver is a plant that is easy to maintain and very effective in controlling erosion and landslides. Vetiver plants planted on hard, rocky slopes will hold soil particles tightly. The “Tebar Wangi” program will be carried out in collaboration with the Pemuda Harapan Sapta (PHS) Youth Organization which is expected to also increase the productivity of the PHS Youth Organization.

Abstract

Trash has become one of the urgent issues affecting the environment. Unfortunately, public awareness, particularly among students, about sorting waste according to its type is still not optimal. The “Waste Education” outreach activity aims to educate students of Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Yogyakarta, especially the 2023 TK-B Class of the Department of Chemical Engineering, on the importance of proper waste management. This outreach activity was attended by 15 students. The socialization utilized a gamification approach in its implementation. The activity began with a presentation followed by playing a game from the website wordwall.com. This game was used to evaluate the students' understanding of the material presented earlier. After the gamification activity was completed, the team created a questionnaire on menti.com as a benchmark to measure the effectiveness of the event. Overall, participants gave positive feedback and found the “Waste Education” activity with the gamification method to be engaging and enjoyable.

Abstract

Palm sugar has wide scope as an alternative sweetener in the Indonesian market. Palm sugar is a natural alternative to cane sugar which is less healthy and also more beneficial for farmers. The taste, sensory profile, and nutritional content of palm sugar vary based on the species, growing region, and climatic conditions. Currently, the traditional processing of palm sap in Kaliabu village results in lower yields and higher costs. There is enormous potential in the field of developing processing techniques (traditional processing, spray drying, membrane technology, and vacuum drying) to optimize palm sugar production in Kaliabu village. Spray drying is a non-conventional method that has the potential to be implemented in palm sugar production in Kaliabu village. This is because spray drying is quite good in terms of increasing antioxidant and phenolic content as well as storage capacity.
