Abstract

The golden generation is the hope for improvement and acceleration of the rate of growth and development of the Indonesian nation during the one hundred years of independence. The golden generation must be prepared on all fronts. Education is one of the pillars of the formation of the golden generation. This study aims to analyze project-based integrated learning in improving 21st century interpersonal linguistic communication skills. Integrated learning can be realized through project synergies with four compulsory curriculum subjects, namely Religious Education, Pancasila Education, Citizenship Education, and Indonesian Language Education. This study used a descriptive qualitative method. The research instrument uses data from student learning assignments. The research was conducted for one semester with English Education students Batch 2022 who contracted the Indonesian Language Education General Course (MKU-PBI). The results of the research show that integrated learning can be done by: 1) synergizing theoretical and practical concepts that become learning orientation, 2) applying character values through the formation of 5C (critical thinking, creativity and innovation, communication skill, collaboration, and confidence), and 3) implementing interpersonal linguistic communication values. Thus, this research can be carried out in the future by involving many study programs or many groups.

Abstract

This research analyzes idiomatic expressions in the voice lines of heroes in the video game Dota 2, using Charles Hockett's theory. This research highlights the potential of video games as an effective tool for language learning, offering native English speakers an authentic context to understand and internalize idiomatic expressions. Through qualitative analysis, 50 idiomatic expressions were identified and classified into six categories: Substitutes, Proper Names, Abbreviations, English Phrase Compounds, Allusions, and Slang. Specifically, Substitutes accounted for 8 idioms, Proper Names for 12 idioms, English Phrasal Compounds for 7 idioms, Figures of Speech for 14 idioms, and Slang for 9 idioms, with no examples of Abbreviations. Each idiom's contextual meaning is analyzed, thus contributing to a deeper understanding of their function in the game. The insights gained create an equivalence between digital games and language education, providing valuable implications for gamers and educators or learners in utilising video games for language development.

Listening comprehension is a crucial skill that significantly affects one's ability to communicate effectively in both professional and social contexts. To enhance students' listening abilities, many educators employ various methods and media, including utilizing YouTube videos from creators like The Wizard Liz. This research employed two types of assessments: a pre-test and a post-test. The study's participants were ninth-grade students from SMPN 1 Sepatan-Tangerang. Hypothesis testing was conducted using the Mann-Whitney test, where the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted if the significance value is below 0.05. In the statistical analysis of Students' Listening skill results in the post-test, the value of Sig. (2-tailed) = 0.00 < 0.05 is obtained. Based on the data, it can be concluded that "H1 is accepted" and "H0 is rejected." Specifically, "H1 posits that there is a significant difference in students' listening skills when using The Wizard Liz's video compared to not using it," while "H0 suggests that there is no significant difference in students' listening skills between using The Wizard Liz's video and not using it. It can be concluded that the use of The Wizard Liz’s video as a learning medium has an effect on the listening ability of ninth-grade students of SMPN 1 Sepatan-Tangerang. Abstract

This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with content analysis methods on novels translated from English into Indonesian. This study was conducted to investigate the type of translation deviation at the syntactic level, in the question sentences used in dialogue of Stephenie Meyer’s Eclipse novel. The source data on the study was taken from Eclipse novel as the source text and Gerhana novel as the target text. The novel has a good translation result, but there are some grammatical deviations when translated into the target text. Translation deviations by using Newmark’s theory. The results of the study showed that (1) translation deviations found in question sentences that are syntactic, lexical, and word arrangement deviations; (2) the causes of such deviations are (1) the presence of untranslated words, grammatical errors, and the use of individual languages; (3) the impact of these deviations is that the sentence becomes ungrammatical, the sentence is not commensurate, there is interference in Indonesian, the text is impolite, the text is ambiguous, and the text is unclear. In general, it can be concluded that the occurrence of deviations at this syntactic level has more influence on the grammatical aspect due to the difference in sentence structure in two different languages. Translators strive to translate the text so that it is easily understood by the reader and adapted to the target reader so that many grammatical aspects are not translated.
