Abstract

Studies about rhetorical moves in the introduction section have been widely conducted. However, the studies focusing on the research problem statement is still limited. This current study investigated the rhetorical structures, strategies, and linguistic features of the problem statement written by undergraduate students, which aimed to contribute to the teaching model in teaching academic writing. This research was a qualitative case study belonging to genre analysis, using Swale’s CARS model. Thirty undergraduate students’ problem statement texts were explored, and interviewers were further conducted to collect the data. The results indicated that nine types of rhetorical structures were employed, most of which were characterized as incomplete. The rhetorical strategies employed by the students were making a centrality claim, making topic generalizations, reviewing previous research, indicating a gap, establishing need and problem, continuing a tradition, outlining purposes, and announcing the state of the present research. Specific linguistic features were used in each move and step although the students admitted that they had lack of knowledge with linguistic features. Based on the research finding, a Critical Genre-Based model for teaching problem statements in writing is proposed because this model has facilitative effect on consciousness-raising of the genre’s rhetorical structure.

Abstract

Problem-solving and decision-making are crucial competencies in the educational setting, indispensable for tackling the multitude of difficulties that educators and administrators encounter on a daily basis. This paper describes the theoretical foundations and real-world uses of these processes in educational environments. The article emphasises the significance of utilising the IDEAL model (Identify, Define, Explore, Anticipate, and Look Back) proposed by Wehmeyer as a problem-solving framework. Using library research, researchers gather, analyse, and arrange data from journals, books, and past studies on the adoption of management methods in the field of education, especially in problem solving and decision-making. This paper highlights the significant influence of organised problem-solving and strategic decision-making on educational outcomes, emphasising their crucial role in promoting a flexible and flourishing educational environment.

Abstract

This study discussed the effect of implementing the Emancipated curriculum on student learning outcomes in spoken interaction material at SMK Negeri 2 Slawi. Quantitative data were collected through a quasi-experimental design using a non-equivalent control group. The research participants were selected using purposive sampling, and the pre-test and post-test results were statistically analyzed. To obtain quantitative data, the researcher conducted a written test to check students' understanding of oral interaction texts. The pre-test and post-test learning outcomes were analyzed using paired t-test and N-Gain Score test statistical calculations. The results of the hypothesis test on interpersonal conversation text showed a significant improvement in the experimental group, with a significance value of 0.000, while the control group had a value of 0.001. The N-Gain Score for the experimental group was 0.6447, and for the control group was -0.4452. These results illustrate that the intervention provided to the experimental group positively and significantly affected the measured outcomes. In contrast, the control group experienced a decrease in the results after the intervention. For transactional conversation text, the experimental group had a significance value of 0.000, while the control group had a value of 0.146. The N-Gain Score for the experimental group was 0.6808, and for the control group was 0.0640. In this study, implementing the Emancipated curriculum was quite effective for learning outcomes of oral interaction texts. In addition, the researcher suggests that English teachers apply the teaching steps according to the independent curriculum to teach other types of texts.

Abstract

The basic rule in communicating is to respect the interlocutor so that the process of communication can run smoothly. Then, the concept of impoliteness by Culpeper (1996) appears and raises new views. Rather than protecting the face of the interlocutor, the concept of impoliteness is used to attack. In communication, impoliteness should be avoided because of its potential to cause conflict. Uniquely, impoliteness is used in the entertainment sector, such as in The Simpsons Movie. With various impoliteness strategies combined with varied implementations, impoliteness that has a negative impression becomes something entertaining. This research aims to 1) Explain the use of impoliteness strategies and 2) explain its function in The Simpsons Movie. The theories used are Culpeper (1996) and (2011), while the method is descriptive qualitative. The detailed findings are bald-on-record 14%, positive impoliteness 42%, negative impoliteness 32%, sarcasm 8%, and withhold politeness 4%, which each strategy has its uniqueness. From this study, it is found that there are various implementations, combinations of delivery, and functions of impoliteness. The use of the impoliteness function plays an important role. The utilization of affective, coercive, and entertainment functions provokes the emotions of the interlocutor and audience to make the movie interesting.
