Abstract

This study explores the representation of binary oppositions in a resistance-themed poetry anthology composed by students of PBSI Reguler E’23, employing structuralism as the principal analytical framework. Often underestimated as amateur works, student poems in this research are positioned as ideological expressions enriched with complex symbolic structures. Drawing from Claude Lévi-Strauss’s structuralist theory, this study examines how pairs of opposing concepts—such as light vs darkness, people vs rulers, and voice vs silence—are constructed to reinforce critical messages against oppressive socio-political realities. Utilizing a descriptive qualitative approach and document analysis method, 38 selected poems were examined through an in-depth textual interpretation of diction patterns, symbolism, and narrative structures that signify ideological tension. The findings reveal that binary oppositions serve not only as stylistic elements but also as thematic foundations that articulate resistance, identity, and collective awareness among students toward social injustice. These results affirm that student poetry embodies both aesthetic and political values, deserving recognition in contemporary literary discourse. Theoretically, this study contributes to the development of structuralist approaches in modern Indonesian literary studies; practically, it offers valuable insight for literature education based on ideological critique within the university context.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the forms and types of loss and analyze the stages of grieving experienced by the main character in the film "Ketika Berhenti Di Sini" based on Kubler Ross' theory. The approach used in this research is literary psychology with qualitative descriptive method. Data sources in the research include dialog, stories, actions, and expressions of a main character related to the experience of loss and the stages of grieving. Data collection techniques include movie observation, recording emotional moments according to Kubler Ross' theory and the concept of loss. The findings of this study show that the main character named Dita experiences real losses such as the death of her father and her lover, as well as emotional losses related to a sense of security and self-stability. Both types of loss have a significant impact on Dita's psychological state. In dealing with the loss, Dita experiences five stages of grief, namely denial, anger, negotiation, depression, and acceptance. These stages can be seen from the changes in Dita's response, which began to escape to the virtual world until she finally accepted reality and continued her life. This research shows that film as a form of literary work can reflect the complexity of human emotional dynamics through the experience of loss and the grieving process experienced by its characters.

Abstract

This study aims to uncover the deeper meanings embedded in the lyrics of the song “Qolbi Fil Madinah” through Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic framework and to explore its implications for the daily life of Muslims. The song was chosen due to its rich spiritual content and its strong reflective potential for listeners. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method with a semiotic analysis framework based on Peirce’s triadic model: representamen (sign), object, and interpretant. The findings reveal that the lyrics are filled with religious symbols—such as Madinah, shalawat, the Green Dome, and the figure of Prophet Muhammad SAW. which serve not only as aesthetic elements but also as carriers of moral and spiritual messages. These messages encourage listeners to increase their love for the Prophet, strengthen their spiritual connection, and cultivate noble character in everyday life. The song thus functions not only as entertainment but also as a medium for fostering Islamic character development in a contextual and emotionally resonant manner.

Abstract

The Israel-Palestine conflict is a global issue laden with power dynamics, ideological struggles, and media representation. Amid dominant and often biased global narratives, visual works such as political caricatures offer an alternative space for voicing criticism and solidarity. This study aims to uncover both the denotative and connotative (mythological) meanings within digital caricatures by Osama Hajjaj, published through his Instagram account. Using a qualitative descriptive method and Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach, which distinguishes between the levels of denotation and connotation. This research analyzes five purposively selected caricatures that explicitly portray the Israel–Palestine conflict, rich in symbolic and contextual relevance (October–December 2024). The findings reveal that at the denotative level, the caricatures depict the realities of conflict through visual elements such as military aggression, civilian suffering, and international institutions. At the connotative level, they deconstruct ideological myths, including digital solidarity, the illusion of ceasefire, the war on terrorism, the hypocrisy of power, and the impartiality of international organizations. These caricatures function as a form of symbolic resistance that not only conveys information but also shapes public consciousness and critiques global power structures. As such, Osama Hajjaj’s works serve as visual texts that play a significant role in the construction and deconstruction of meaning surrounding the Israel–Palestine conflict in the digital age.

Abstract

Abstract

The epistemology of Sufism, as a bridge between rational knowledge and spiritual experience in Islam, has long fascinated Muslim thinkers. This research reveals the complex layers of thought of Ibn Arabi and Al-Ghazali, two Sufi figures whose thoughts have resonated throughout the centuries. Through in-depth analysis of their monumental works, this study reveals how these two figures navigated the sea of ma'rifah (intuitive knowledge) on different ships but headed to the same port. Al-Ghazali, with his kashf compass, sailed carefully between the currents of the Shari'a and reality, while Ibn Arabi, with his Wahdat al-Wujud sails, sailed a wider horizon, embracing the winds of Greek and Bathiniyah philosophy. This research not only maps their spiritual routes, but also explores how the knowledge maps they drew are still relevant in the navigation of contemporary spirituality, offering a new compass for seekers of meaning in the modern era.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the narrative structure of the story of Prophet Yunus (AS) in the Qur’an using A.J. Greimas’s structural semiotic approach, particularly the actantial and functional models. Employing a qualitative-descriptive method, this research analyzes selected verses from Surah As-Saffat (139–148), Al-Anbiya (87–88), and Al-Qalam (48–50) as primary data sources. Data were collected through close reading and literature study, and interpreted through the identification of actantial elements such as subject, object, helper, and opponent, as well as narrative phases including initial situation, transformation, and final situation. The findings reveal that the story of Prophet Yunus is not only rich in theological meaning but also conveys symbolic depth and emotional dynamics, arranged in a systematic narrative structure. Greimas’s actantial schema highlights the functional relationships between narrative roles, while the functional schema traces the transformation of the protagonist from spiritual crisis to redemption and renewed mission. This study affirms that the Qur’anic narrative of Prophet Yunus is intentionally structured and spiritually meaningful, offering insights into the interplay between narrative form and religious content. The results contribute to Qur’anic literary studies by demonstrating how semiotic analysis can uncover layers of meaning that connect linguistic structure with moral and spiritual messages.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to conduct an in-depth examination of the personality competence of Arabic language teachers based on the principles of Islamic educational philosophy. This research employs a qualitative approach with a literature study method to analyze the personality competence of Arabic language teachers from the perspective of Islamic educational philosophy. Primary and secondary data were collected from classical and modern literature, including the works of al-Ghazali and policy documents. Data collection techniques involved document review and evaluation of sources based on their credibility and relevance. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive-analytical content analysis to interpret meanings and patterns within the texts, resulting in a profound philosophical understanding of the personality competence of Arabic language teachers. The findings indicate that Islamic educational philosophy positions Arabic language teachers as moral exemplars and spiritual guides. Personality competence encompasses tauhid (the oneness of God), moral integrity, emotional balance, professionalism, cultural wisdom, and commitment to spiritual development. By integrating Qur’anic values and language skills, teachers play a strategic role in shaping students’ faith, morality, and competencies, thereby making education holistic, relevant, and beneficial for the welfare of the community. These findings affirm that Arabic language teachers must develop personality competencies including tauhid, moral integrity, emotional balance, professionalism, cultural wisdom, and spiritual commitment. This is essential to realizing Arabic language learning that is holistic, meaningful, and aligned with the values of Islamic educational philosophy for the betterment of society.

Abstract

Translating a book can help many people access its content in a language they understand. However, translation often involves challenges, particularly with sentences that are not easily comprehensible to readers. This is especially true for poetry, which frequently employs figurative language and metaphors. In this case, the author applies Newmark's translation methods to analyze the poetry in the book Fihi Ma Fihi by Jalaluddin Rumi, which has been translated from Arabic into Indonesian by Anwar Holid. The research method used in this study is descriptive qualitative, focusing on the verses of poetry within the book. Translators often rely on various translation theories, which sometimes result in ambiguous diction. The translator determines the translation method based on the context of the poetry and its linguistic nuances. Anwar Holid's translation incorporates idiomatic expressions and styles of human communication, influencing both the conveyed meaning and the reader's understanding. This study examines the shifts in meaning at a lexical level and the translator's choices in rendering Rumi's poetry. Eleven stanzas are analyzed in terms of their translations and compared to their lexical meanings. Each word carries a distinct meaning and translation that aligns with the poetic verses written by Jalaluddin Rumi.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the story facts character, plot, and setting in the short story “Sa’id Hasan” by Kamil Kaylani using the structuralist approach of Robert Stanton. Literature, as a reflection of life and a medium of cultural communication, is closely tied to the social environment in which it emerges. Short stories, as a popular literary form, offer concise yet meaningful narratives, making structural analysis essential to fully comprehend their messages. The structuralist approach holds that the meaning of a literary work lies not in isolated elements, but in the integration of its intrinsic components that form a coherent structure. This research focuses on three story facts outlined by Stanton’s theory: character, plot, and setting. The short story “Sa’id Hasan” tells the tale of a simple man named Hasan who appears cheerful but harbors deep sorrow over the loss of his family. The findings reveal that the story is rich with life values and effectively conveys the protagonist’s emotional depth through its well-organized structure. This research contributes theoretically to the development of structuralist literary studies, particularly in Arabic short stories, and offers practical benefits as a reference for academic studies in the field of Arabic Language and Literature.
