Abstract

This paper spotlights the rising concern of youths exhibiting violent behaviour. The scope is on cultivation and social learning theories linked to and rationalizing media content as catalysts of violent behaviour among the youths. With the aid of primary data sources for analysis, 180 questionnaires were printed and distributed to senior school students in Abraka metropolis. 178 filled questionnaires came back but 2 were incomplete so were discarded. 176 were used. Cultivation theory was identified as a theory that incites learning and practicing what a person sees on television while the social learning theory points out observation, imitation, and modeling as ways of learning. Empirical studies were also reviewed to establish other researchers’ views and their findings were scrutinized in line with this paper on how media content encourages copycatting into real life. The researchers made some recommendations to the government, media houses, and institutions of learning but, specifically to the youths to be more responsible and selective of the content they expose themselves to and consume or to be ready to face immediate and severe punishment if found guilty of violent behaviour.

Abstract

The study is mainly based on the impact of home movies on the morals and cultural values of Nigerian youths in Delta state. With a survey approach, 225 participants from Abraka Grammar School, University Secondary School and Ojeta Secondary School were sampled by using purposive sampling techniques. Copies of a structured questionnaire were distributed to students to collect information on their perceptions regarding the dressing styles, fashion depictions in home videos, and the effects of the same on cultural behavior and economic trends. It is seen that students' evaluations of dressing styles and fashion trends under study of home videos have the strongest effect on cultural values of young Nigerian adults in Delta State. Therefore, it is worth mentioning that the economy of individuals living in Delta is also affected by the actions of the Nigerian youths who watch home movies. Suggestions include encouraging limitation on the watching of movies that are not virtuous, but rather use of those that may seem helpful for the same. However, this may not be a practical measure to reduce immoral behavior. Furthermore, the emphasis must be put more on the positive aspects of the films found in the home movie.

Abstract

The trend in the use of digital media for reportage in Nigeria is dynamic due to the impact of technology, growth in internet usage, and the adoption of social media. This paper aims to identify the future trends of digital media reportage in Nigeria by assessing the latest trends in digital media. Prospect was also assessed and challenges were discussed to provide a balanced view of the discussion. In light of the rationale grounded on media ecology theory, the study was conducted with a survey design approach accompanied by key informant interview analysis. The target population was 2936 postgraduate students of Delta State University, Abraka. The sample was 293 indicating 10% of the target population. The tool employed for data collection was a structured questionnaire containing a Likert scale and a purposive sampling technique. Consequently, the use of descriptive statistical analysis facilitated a summary of demographic information, media consumption and exposure toward digital media in Nigeria. STATA 0.13 statistical app aided the analysis process to assess the mean and standard deviation values. The study findings reveal that there is a trend towards consuming more engaging content, particularly through the use of A. I and A.R. Digital media have the potential to increase chances of inclusion, share information, and increase citizen journalism. However, challenges have not been completely done away with, like misinformation, and lapsed regulatory hurdles. Based on the findings of the study, it can be asserted that there is great potential for the development of digital media reportage for effective civic engagement, representation of pluralism, and socio-economic advancement in Nigeria. As a result, it is recommended to establish effective regulation by the positioned bodies and stakeholders to fight against false information, personal data protection, and investigative journalism standards to protect the public’s interests.
