Abstract

This study investigates the impact of education budget allocations on the gross enrollment rate (GER) in the cities and districts of West Java, Indonesia. Additionally, it explores underlying factors that may be impeding educational transformation in the region. A panel dataset was compiled, covering 27 cities and districts in West Java over a five-year period (2018–2022). The data included annual percentages of education budget allocations and corresponding GER values. The analysis employed the Random Effects Model for panel data regression to evaluate the relationship between the variables. The regression analysis revealed a negative, statistically insignificant relationship between education budget allocation and the gross enrollment rate. The findings suggest that increases in education budgets have not corresponded with improvements in enrollment rates across the region. These results indicate that higher budget allocations alone do not guarantee better educational outcomes. The study raises concerns about inefficiencies in budget utilization and suggests the presence of systemic or structural issues within the education system that may be limiting the impact of increased funding.

Abstract

The rapid advancement of digital technology has significantly transformed the education sector, including Islamic educational institutions. These institutions are urged to adapt through institutional reform to remain relevant in the digital era. This study employed a qualitative approach using literature review and participatory observation. Data were collected from relevant academic publications (2019–2024), institutional reports, and observations at selected Islamic educational institutions. The findings reveal that Islamic educational institutions face several challenges in the digitalization process, including the digital divide, resistance to change, limited infrastructure, and insufficient digital competencies among teachers. However, the digital era also presents substantial opportunities, such as broader access to learning resources, flexible learning environments, improved institutional management, and global collaboration. Institutional reform in Islamic education requires strategic efforts such as infrastructure development, human resource digital literacy enhancement, curriculum integration with digital competencies, and the use of digital platforms for da'wah and religious moderation. Abstract

Assessment in education plays a critical role in evaluating not only students’ cognitive understanding but also broader 21st-century skills such as critical thinking, collaboration, and communication. However, traditional assessments often prioritize conceptual knowledge over these essential skills. This study investigates current trends in assessment within science education to identify gaps and potential improvements. A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was conducted using articles sourced from the Google Scholar database between 2014 and 2024. The search employed keywords such as “assessment learning” and “science learning.” A total of 992 articles were initially collected, which were then filtered based on relevance and quality, resulting in 76 eligible articles. Data analysis was supported by Publish or Perish software and visualized using VOSviewer. The VOSviewer analysis produced network, overlay, and density visualizations that revealed a predominant focus on conceptual understanding in science education assessments. This focus likely stems from the relative ease of standardizing and measuring conceptual knowledge compared to more complex 21st-century skills. Other dimensions, such as creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving, were significantly underrepresented in the literature. The findings highlight a need to diversify assessment strategies in science education to better reflect 21st-century learning goals. This review provides a foundation for future research aimed at developing comprehensive assessment instruments that go beyond cognitive evaluation and support holistic student development.

Abstract

Continuous Professional Development (CPD) is vital for enhancing teaching quality and professional growth. This study compares the implementation and impact of CPD on teaching practices and teacher professionalism in Indonesia and China, highlighting similarities and differences in national strategies. A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was conducted using the PRISMA protocol. Relevant literature was sourced from the Scopus database, following four stages: identification, screening, eligibility, and data extraction. From an initial pool of 735 articles, 17 met the inclusion criteria and were selected for in-depth analysis. Findings indicate a shift in Indonesia from traditional CPD models to more formalized systems, particularly through the Program Profesi Guru (PPG), which aims to improve teaching quality and align curricula with student needs. In China, CPD is embedded within national policy, notably through the National Teacher Training Program (NTTP), which emphasizes digital competencies and educational equity. Indonesian CPD initiatives have led to increased teacher motivation and improved instructional practices. In China, CPD efforts have enhanced teacher competence, reduced urban–rural disparities, and strengthened learning outcomes. Both countries have achieved positive outcomes through CPD, though their approaches differ. Indonesia prioritizes certification and curriculum relevance, while China focuses on policy integration and digital skills enhancement. CPD significantly contributes to teaching effectiveness and educational reform. While Indonesia emphasizes structured certification pathways, China’s approach integrates CPD into broader educational policies, underlining its strategic role in national development.

Abstract

Student learning outcomes represent their understanding of subject material and serve as a benchmark for evaluating educational effectiveness. A preliminary investigation at SMA Negeri 7 Gorontalo revealed low student performance in matrix-related mathematics topics. Among various factors influencing learning success, critical thinking stands out as a key internal factor in mathematics education. This study employed a quantitative, descriptive-correlational design with an ex post facto approach. It aimed to assess the mathematical critical thinking skills of Grade XI students and to examine their relationship with learning outcomes on matrix material. Critical thinking was evaluated using four indicators: analyzing, evaluating, explaining, and concluding. Findings indicated that most students had not yet achieved an optimal level of mathematical critical thinking, with an average score of 56.34 across a sample of 50 students. Correlational analysis revealed a significant positive relationship between critical thinking skills and learning outcomes, with critical thinking accounting for 61.62% of the variance in performance. The data suggest that mathematical critical thinking skills play a substantial role in determining student success in matrix material. Given the strong correlation observed, enhancing these skills may lead to measurable improvements in learning outcomes. There is a significant and positive relationship between students' mathematical critical thinking skills and their learning outcomes in matrix material. Efforts to strengthen critical thinking could be an effective strategy to improve academic performance in mathematics.

Abstract

Qiroatul kutub is a critical language skill in pesantren education. Despite its importance, preliminary research indicates that only 30% of students in South Sumatra's pesantren can proficiently read classical Arabic texts, known as the yellow book. This gap highlights the need to examine how various pesantren implement qiroatul kutub learning. This qualitative study employed a phenomenological design to explore learning constructions in traditional, semi-modern, and modern pesantren. Data were collected through structured interviews, participatory observation, and documentation. Analysis followed Miles and Huberman's interactive model: data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. Findings reveal commonalities in the use of classical texts, focus on Arabic grammar (Nahwu and Shorf), Arabic proficiency development, and the overarching goal of producing Islamic scholars. Differences emerged in teaching methods, curricula, subject focus, and linguistic approaches. Traditional pesantren retain classical techniques such as sorogan, bandongan, muhafazhoh, tarjamah, and bahtsul masail. In contrast, semi-modern and modern pesantren integrate these with contemporary educational methods. The study concludes that each pesantren type adapts its qiroatul kutub system in line with its institutional identity and vision. Understanding these variations can inform strategies to enhance classical text literacy among pesantren students

Abstract

Technological innovations have significantly influenced language learning approaches, particularly among Arabic Literature students. Duolingo, a gamified language learning application, has gained popularity for vocabulary development. However, its effectiveness in academic contexts remains underexplored. This study employed a mixed-methods design to assess Duolingo’s impact on vocabulary acquisition among 50 Arabic Literature students at Hasanuddin University. Participants completed pre- and post-tests over a two-week period of Duolingo use. Additionally, a questionnaire was administered to collect students’ perceptions of the app's usability and educational value. Findings revealed that 74% of students improved their vocabulary scores, with an average increase of 4.8 points. Students reported that Duolingo’s spaced repetition and gamification features enhanced motivation and vocabulary retention. However, 24% showed slight score declines, attributing this to the app’s limited focus on grammar, writing, and speaking—skills essential for academic success. While Duolingo supports vocabulary development through engaging and interactive methods, it falls short in providing comprehensive language instruction. These limitations suggest the necessity of integrating supplementary learning tools to support grammar and productive language skills. Duolingo can serve as a valuable supplementary tool for vocabulary learning but should not replace holistic language instruction. Future research should investigate the incorporation of artificial intelligence to enhance its capabilities in grammar and speaking skill development.

Abstract

The rapid advancement of information technology has significantly transformed educational practices, particularly in the shift from conventional to digital learning models. In response to this transformation and the implementation of online learning policies by the Ministry of Education and Culture, this study aims to develop electronic teaching materials using a scientific approach for Indonesian language instruction in Class XI of vocational high schools. This research employed a development research design using the 4D model by Thiagarajan, which includes the stages of Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate. However, the study focused solely on the first three stages due to time and resource constraints. The teaching materials were developed in the form of flipbook-based electronic modules and subjected to expert validation. Three domains were assessed: content (by material experts), language (by linguists), and visual design (by graphic experts). The validation results showed that the electronic flipbook teaching materials achieved an average feasibility score of 83.32%, which falls into the "Very Appropriate" category. Feedback from experts indicated strong alignment with curriculum standards, appropriate language usage for the target audience, and effective visual presentation. In conclusion, the developed flipbook-based electronic teaching materials are highly suitable for use in Class XI Indonesian language instruction, particularly in online learning contexts. Future research should focus on the dissemination stage and include empirical testing of learning outcomes with students to determine effectiveness in real classroom settings.
