Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore how the concept of STEM were used and negotiated by teachers in kindergarten. Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics are inseparable parts of everyday life. This study was focused on teachers' perspectives on STEM learning in kindergarten level. STEM learning in this article included activities integrated into the existing themes in kindergarten. STEM learning involves children's creativity and stimulation to solve problems, know the solutions, and think logically, mathematically, and critically. In its implementation, STEM learning cannot be separated from the teachers' perspectives. Thus, analysing teachers' perspectives on STEM learning in kindergarten, including what activities were included, will contribute to early childhood education development. This research was a qualitative study and carried out using an online interview. Drawing on data from 50 kindergarten teachers in Indonesia as the respondents, findings of this study indicated that the term STEM was still considered unfamiliar for kindergarten teachers, the implementation and benefits of STEM in kindergarten also implemented with a more flexible model.

Abstract

Changes in the education system due to COVID-19 pandemic through distance learning (PJJ) have made it difficult to accommodate students’ needs in achieving mathematical proficiency. The needs of these students are based on students learning style preference (KGB), how students obtain information, as one of the determinants of success in learning mathematics. This study aims to investigate the extent to which each student’s KGB can adapt to the PJJ designed through RADEC (Read-Answer-Discuss-Explain-Create) and direct learning. A quasi-experimental study with 2 x 3 factorial designed was conducted involving 56 4th graders from a private elementary school in Bandung. The research instrument used was the KGB scale and mathematical conceptual understanding (MCU) test. The result of this study showed that there were differences in students’ MCU viewed by KGB during PJJ which was more accommodating to visual students. It is necessary to improve the PJJ design that accommodate each KGB.

Abstract

The importance of reading comprehension is immense. It contributes to the success of language learning and teaching. However, there are some factors such as less interesting and difficult text sources and other non-contextual factors that demotivate the students in reading. To deal with that issue, the implementation of a Learning Management System (LMS) called MedicalEnglish is introduced to the students in order to amplify the students’ motivation in learning English. This study is intended to investigate the motivation of 22 Diploma students of the Nursing department in Semarang in reading using MedicalEnglish. In this qualitative case study, questionnaire and interview were selected as the instrument. The data collected from the two instruments were then descriptively elaborated. In conclusion, there is a significant improvement in students’ motivation in learning reading after the implementation of MedicalEnglish. The result of this study is expected to provide additional reliable sources regarding the implementation of LMS in sustaining students’ reading motivation.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of Google Classroom in online learning for class V at SD Negeri Kranggan in the Covid-19 era. This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study method. The data sources of this research were students and teachers of class V and the principal of SD Negeri Kranggan. Data collection techniques used are observation and interviews. Data analysis using triangulation techniques and sources. The results showed that the percentage of use of Google Classroom in online learning for class V was 81% with a good category. There are 5 of 7 Google Classroom features that have been used in online learning for class V SD Negeri Kranggan with the implementation of learning applying aspects of theexisting six aspects. This study concludes that the use of Google Classroom has utilized the five available features including assignment, grading, mobile application, privacy, and time-cost by implementing aspects of using Google Classroom including creating accounts, organizing classrooms, managing topics in the classroom, uploading materials, developing questions and make assessments.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the indicators of critical thinking skills that developed in the questions that contained in the XI grade high school chemistry textbook and to determine the critical thinking level of the questions developed in the XI high school chemistry textbook. This study is a qualitative research using descriptive documentation analysis method or content analysis. The document that analyzed are questions in the chemistry textbook used by eleventh grade students at four Senior High Schools in Surakarta. The sampling technique that used is multistage sampling and data validation using observer triangulation. The results showed that the critical thinking indicators that appeared on the questions from the textbooks analyzed included basic clarification, appearing at 100%; bases for a decision appearing at 0%; inference appearing at 88.9%; Advanced clarification appearing at 38.9%; supposition and integration appearing at 31.5%; auxiliary ability appearing at 40.7%. Meanwhile, based on the Critical Thinking Level (TBK), the questions included in the TBK 0 group are 0%; TBK 1 are 29.6%; TBK 2 are 68.5%; TBK 3 are 1.8%.

Abstract

Study of meta-analysis by selecting the random effect model was employed to investigate and examine students’ education level predicted as one of the causative factors of the heterogeneity of mathematical critical thinking ability (MCTA) through problem-based learning (PBL). Search engines such as Google Scholar and Semantic Scholar were used to find thirty journal or proceeding articles published in 2011 – 2021 and indexed by Scopus, Sinta, and Web of Science. The Z and Q Cochrane test were used to analyze the data. The results revealed that education level was one of the significant factors causing the heterogeneity of students’ MCTA through PBL. Therefore, mathematics teachers or lecturers should minimize the gap by improving the learning quality through PBL in education level in which students’ MCTA was still low.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine students' understanding of environmental literacy and the application of the Community Science Technology (STM) approach in elementary schools. The focus of the research is the application of the STM approach to improving the environmental literacy of third-grade students in an elementary school in Malang. The aspects used are based on environmental literacy indicators, including aspects of cognitive abilities and affective abilities. The research method used is a case study with a qualitative approach. The instruments used are observation, interviews, and documentation. The data analysis used refers to the Miles & Huberman model, which has three steps in analyzing the data: Data Reduction, Data Presentation, and Conclusion Drawing/Verification. The results showed that applying the STM approach could improve student learning outcomes. Student learning outcomes on aspects of cognitive abilities and affective abilities can be said to be good. The results of this completeness can conclude that the STM approach can improve student learning outcomes, especially in the aspect of environmental literacy.
