Abstract

In this research, the researchers focus on describing character development and the factors that influence the character development of the main character in the Black Swan film. The researcher uses two theories to answer the two problem formulations. In the first question, the researcher used Murphy's characterization theory to find out the character of Nina Sayers in the Black Swan film before and after changing. In the second question, the researcher used the personality development theory of Elizabeth B. Hurlock to find out the factors that influence the character development experienced by the main character. In this research, the method that the researcher used was the qualitative descriptive research method. The analysis results show that Nina's character has changed from submissive to disobedient, innocent to rebel, kind to revolt, quiet to rude, and weak to brutal. The developments of these five Nina's character are influenced by three determinants such as emotional, aspiration and achievement, and family.Dalam penelitian ini, peneliti fokus untuk mendeskripsikan perkembangan karakter dan faktor yang mempengaruhi perkembangan karakter dari karakter utama dalam film Black Swan. Peneliti menggunakan dua teori untuk menjawab dua rumusan masalah tersebut. Pertanyaan pertama, peneliti menggunakan teori karakterisasi dari Murphy untuk mengetahui karakter dari Nina Sayers dalam film Black Swan sebelum dan sesudah berubah. Pertanyaan kedua, peneliti menggunakan teori perkembangan kepribadian dari Elizabeth B. Hurlock untuk mengetahui faktor yang mempengaruhi perkembangan karakter yang dialami karakter utama. Dalam penelitian ini, metode yang digunakan oleh peneliti adalah metode penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa karakter Nina telah berubah dari penurut menjadi pembangkang, polos menjadi pemberontak, baik hati menjadi pemberontak, pendiam menjadi kasar, dan lemah menjadi kejam. perkembangan dari lima karakter Nina tersebut dipengaruhi oleh tiga determinan seperti emosional, aspirasi dan pencapaian, dan keluarga.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study presents the syntactical analysis on sentence patterns in the selected songs of Taylor Swift’s Album Lover by using the theory of sentence patterns by Quirk and Greenbaum. This research also uses the theory of tree diagram by Bornstein to help the researcher in analyzing sentence patterns. In this study the researcher used descriptive method and content analysis approach. The data of this research are words, phrases, and sentences related to the analysis of sentence pattern especially in _You Need to Calm Down_, _Cruel Summer_, _Death by Thousand Cut_, _Paper Rings_, and _Daylight_ song. From the results, through the sentences chosen by the researcher, the researcher found that the largest number of the sentence pattern in Taylor Swift’s song lyrics is in pattern 3: S + Vt + dO which is used for 5 times. Finally, there are three patterns which are not used at all, which are pattern 1: S + LV + A, pattern 6: S + Vt + iO + dO, and pattern 7: S + Vi. Those patterns were not used because the researcher did not find any data or lyrics in Taylor Swift’s selected songs and selected sentences in Lover album that use any of those patterns.*Keywords:* Syntactic Analysis, Sentence Pattern, Tree Diagram, Lover’s AlbumABSTRAKPenelitian ini menyajikan analisis sintaksis pada pola kalimat di lagu-lagu pilihan Taylor Swift pada album Lover dengan menggunakan teori pola kalimat dari Quirk dan Greenbaum. Penelitian ini juga menggunakan teori diagram pohon dari Bornstein untuk membantu peneliti dalam menganalisis pola kalimat. Dalam penelitian ini peneliti menggunakan metode deskriptif dan pendekatan analisis isi. Data penelitian ini berupa kata, frasa, dan kalimat yang berkaitan dengan analisis pola kalimat terutama pada lagu _You Need to Calm Down_, _Cruel Summer_, _Death by Thousand Cut_, _Paper Rings_, dan _Daylight_. Dari hasil penelitian, melalui kalimat-kalimat yang dipilih oleh peneliti, peneliti menemukan bahwa jumlah pola kalimat terbesar dalam lirik lagu Taylor Swift adalah pola 3: S + Vt + dO yang digunakan sebanyak 5 kali. Terakhir, ada tiga pola yang tidak digunakan sama sekali, yaitu pola 1: S + LV + A, pola 6: S + Vt + iO + dO, dan pola 7: S + Vi. Pola-pola tersebut tidak digunakan karena peneliti tidak menemukan data atau lirik pada lagu-lagu pilihan Taylor Swift dan kalimat-kalimat pilihan dalam album Lover yang menggunakan pola-pola tersebut.*Kata Kunci:* Analisis Sintaksis, Pola Kalimat, Diagram Pohon, Album Lover

Abstract

Poetry is a literary genre that evolved throughout times, but features a common identity: deviations from linguistics norm to attain aesthetic value. One of such poems is Erwin Clarkson Garrett’s The Dyak Chief. This research aims to identify and analyze the semantic deviations featured in the The Dyak Chief and how the deviants related to the narrative quality of the poem. The objective of this research is to answer two research questions that the researcher addressed: the types of semantic deviations and how they serve the meaning purpose of the poem. The present research is a qualitative study with stylistics approach. Furthermore, the concept of narrative poetry was also elaborated in order to answer on how the deviants serve the meaning of the poem. Based on the conducted research, the poem contains the three main tropes of semantic deviation: semantic oddity (except for paradox), transference of meaning, and honest deceptions (except for litotes). Moreover, these deviations provided revelation, emotional aspect of the main character, and themes of The Dyak Chief. This deviants in turn helped to built the feature of the poem in regards of these three aspects as a narrative poetry.Keywords: stylistics, semantic deviations, The Dyak Chief, poetry, narrative

Abstract

This study aims to portray the personality of Katie's character in the story Midnight Sun by using Sigmund Freud theory. The researcher used qualitative-descriptive method. The results showed that there were 3 descriptions of Katie's personality. The description of Katie's personality is the id, ego, and superego. All of these personality traits are represented through Katie's character who plays a big role in bringing about changes due to her illness.This thesis discusses about the main character Katie in the Midnight Sun film. The researcher concerns on exploring the personality character of Katie to portray the personality of Katie’s character in the story Midnight Sun. The researcher assumes that each personality in this study, the researcher used a film entitled “Midnight Sun” by Scoot Speer (2018). This study uses qualitative descriptive research and Sigmund Freud's theory of psychoanalysis. These are composed of three elements, the namely id, the ego, and the superego. The researcher could find out the Katie’s personality because of the disease of Xeroderma Pigmentosum which she suffered by using characterization with telling and showing. Katie Price's Xeroderma Pigmentosum (XP) disease played a major role in giving birth to personality change in Katie by using the Pickering and Hoeper method, namely telling and showing. Katie's ego, which is so dominant in fulfilling the demands of the id and often blocks the role of the superego, is the main cause of the personality change that Katie goes through. Based on the three types of anxiety raised by Sigmund Freud, Katie also felt the three types of anxiety. The first anxiety is moral, the second anxiety is realistic and the last or third anxiety is neurotic anxiety.Keywords: Xeroderma Pigmentosum, Personality, Id, Ego, Superego.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out the types of anxiety and defense mechanisms experienced by the main character, Cecilia, in the film (The Invisible Man). The theory used is the theory of Sigmund Freud such as neurotic anxiety, moral anxiety and realistic anxiety, and defense mechanisms such as repression, sublimation, displacement, rationalization projection, reaction formation, denial, and fantasy. The data in this study were taken from the film The Invisible Man (2020) directed by Leigh Whennel. The results of this study found that the anxiety experienced by Cecilia, namely neurotic anxiety (fear unknown danger) and realistic anxiety (fear in face to face in real condition). Thus, the defense mechanism used in reducing anxiety by Cecilia is repression (represses mind to subconscious) and is followed by several other defense mechanisms, namely rationalization (more acceptable), fantasy (imagination), denial (denied accusations), and reaction formation (over protective). What can be underlined in this study is that in the invisible man film, Cecilia as the main character uses a defense mechanism, to reduce the anxiety she experiences.

Abstract

Translation is a process of transferring meaning from source language to target language concerning the stylistics and norm of the target culture. This research only focused on translation techniques and quality of four abstracts undergraduate thesis of Indonesia Literature Students of Mulawarman University. The researcher used qualitative methods, translation studies and investigator triangulation. Molina and Albir’s theory was used to analyze translation techniques, while the researcher used Nababan’s theory for translation quality. To reduce any subjectivity when assessing translation quality, the researcher asked for help from two English Literature lecturers of Mulawarman University to become the raters of this research. Ten translation techniques were found in all abstracts: amplification, borrowing, calque, compensation, generalization, literal translation, modulation, particularization, reduction, and transposition. The most technique used by all of the students is literal translation. There are twenty-two accurate data, seventeen acceptable data, and thirty-nine readable data from all abstracts. However, three inaccurate data, one unacceptable datum and one not readable datum were found.Keywords: translation techniques, translation quality, undergraduate thesis abstract

Abstract

Character development is the transformation process of the character from bad character to good character or the opposite that influenced by intrinsic elements. That is why the researchersused the guide from intrinsic elements and used the structuralism theory from Seymor Chatman. In this research, the researchers focused on the development of Peter, the main character. The researchers also used characterization theory from Rimmon Kenan to characterized Peter. This research used qualitative content analysis as the research design. The result of the research showed that even though many says that Peter is a flat character that impossible to change, the researcher found that the influence of Wendy towards Peter, she changed him into a better version of himself, appreciated the lost boys, and even though his thought about parents was not good, he still let the lost boys to leave and have their own parents. The researchersalso found influence of intrinsic elements on Peter’s character development. First, plot showed his condition from the beginning until the ending events. Second, setting showed his background in Neverland, the place where he lived.

Abstract

Unggahan Tasya Farasya di Instagram mengundang respons negatif dari warganet dikarenakan perseteruan dengan saudarinya, Tasyi Athasyia. Permasalahan tersebut yang melatarbelakangi warganet melontarkan kata dan kalimat kasar untuk menghujat dan menyindir Tasya Farasya dalam unggahan akun Instagram miliknya. Komentar warganet ini termasuk bahasa sarkasme, sehingga penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan jenis sarkasme dan makna implikatur bahasa sarkasme warganet dalam kolom komentar pada akun Instagram @tasyafarasya. Jenis penelitian ini adalah penelitian kepustakaan dan menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif. Data penelitian yaitu kata, frasa, dan kalimat. Sumber data dalam penelitian ini yaitu akun media sosial Instagram @tasyafarasya yang menunjukkan jenis sarkasme Elizabeth Camp. Data diperoleh dengan teknik simak bebas libat cakap (SBLC), teknik sadap berupa tangkapan layar, dan teknik catat. Selanjutnya diklasifikasikan menggunakan kartu data berbentuk tabel data. Analisis data dalam kajian pragmatik ini menggunakan metode padan ekstralingual atau pemaknaan interpretasi berdasarkan konteks. Hasil penelitian yang ditemukan dalam kolom komentar pada akun Instagram @tasyafarasya, di antaranya yaitu sarkasme proposional, sarkasme leksikal, sarkasme like prefixed, dan sarkasme ilokusi. Jenis sarkasme yang lebih dominan ditemukan dalam kolom komentar pada akun Instagram @tasyafarasya, yaitu sarkasme leksikal karena terdapat penggunaan kata atau kalimat yang memuji kemudian menghina. Makna implikatur yang ditemukan hanya makna konvensional karena penggunaan bahasa sarkasme warganet yang ditemukan bersifat umum diketahui oleh masyarakat. Hasil analisis jenis sarkasme dan makna implikatur bahasa sarkasme warganet dalam kolom komentar pada akun Instagram @tasyafarasya dilatarbelakangi dengan konteks permasalahan pribadinya.

Abstract

Symbolic Interactionism theory by Cooley explains that an individual cannot be separated from society. Individuals or groups of people will interact through communication until they finally enter the social order. Through this interaction, not only actions but also mindsets are changed. This thesis discusses the influence of the social environment on Charlie's hard times in The Perks of Being a Wallflower novel. The purpose of this research is to find out and explain the influence of Charlie's social environment to help him rise from his hard times. These hard times are identified through the conflicts that Charlie faces. This thesis also focuses on Charlie's way of making new friends by interacting with his new friends, Patrick and Sam. In this case, Patrick and Sam are Charlie's social environment. Both of them provide him with various forms of social support: instrumental, tangible, informational, and emotional. The researcher uses symbolic interactionism theory with qualitative research method and a sociological approach in this thesis. Based on the analysis, Charlie, the main character, managed to get through his hard times because of his friendship with Patrick and Sam. It can be seen from the way they interact until Charlie receives all types of social support from Patrick and Sam. Charlie was given gifts, advice, entertainment, attention, love, and care. In this thesis, the researcher also found that the presence of a social environment for Charlie, who is going through hard times, has a big impact on his ability to finally be confident, feel loved by his family and friends, and be able to get along with other people around him besides Patrick and Sam. Charlie has also stated that he will begin to become preoccupied with interacting with other people in real life. He said he would not write letters so often anymore and would participate with other people.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Discrimination is a social problem that often occurs in society. This study focused on discrimination issues towards Jesse Owens as the main character in the Race film. The purposes of this research are to identify the types of discrimination and the types of responses against discrimination that happens to Jesse Owens in the Race film. The researcher used a qualitative method and mimetic approach in this research. To identify the types of discrimination and the types of responses against discrimination, the researcher used Feagin and Sikes' theory. There were four types of discrimination that occurred towards Jesse Owens, namely avoidance, rejection, verbal attacks, and the last are other threats and harassment. From all the types of discrimination found, verbal attacks were the most common type found in this research. In addition, there was no type of police threats and harassment in this film, because Jesse Owens rarely interacts with the police. Besides, there were two types of responses against discrimination shown by Jesse Owens in the Race film, namely withdrawal and resigned acceptance. From all the types of responses against discrimination, resigned acceptance is the most common type in this research. In addition, there was no verbal confrontation and physical confrontation in this film because the discrimination stopped after he did the resigned acceptance to against it. All of the discrimination in this study is depicted through Jesse Owens as the victim in this film.
