Abstract

The mental health of Muslim students has become a critical issue that demands counseling approaches grounded in Islamic spiritual and cultural values. This study aims to conduct a systematic literature review on Islamic counseling approaches that support the mental health of Muslim students or adolescents, as well as to analyze their effectiveness and implementation challenges. The method employed is a systematic literature review of ten scholarly articles published in 2025, selected based on strict inclusion and exclusion criteria. The review findings indicate that Islamic counseling approaches are highly diverse, encompassing tazkiyatun nafs, sufi psychotherapy, Islamic Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (ICBT), Islamic expressive writing, Islamic character education, and innovations in sharia-based digital counseling services. Most of these approaches have proven effective in enhancing mental resilience, reducing anxiety, improving emotional balance, and strengthening students' spiritual resilience. Nevertheless, several challenges were identified, including the limited competence of Islamic counselors, social stigma against counseling services, technological barriers, and the lack of longitudinal evidence-based studies. This review highlights the importance of developing Islamic counseling services that are structured, empirically grounded, and supported by collaboration among practitioners, academics, and policymakers to promote the mental health of Muslim youth in the contemporary era.

Abstract

This research aims to answer the main question of how the role of Islamic Guidance and Counseling (BPI) is in handling cases of bullying experienced by students at the Faculty of Da'wah and Communication, UIN Sumatera Utara. This study is motivated by the lack of Islamic value-based approaches in addressing psychological violence in higher education settings. The research uses a descriptive qualitative method with in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation techniques. The informants consisted of four people: one supervising lecturer and three students who had previously been victims of bullying and participated in BPI services. The data was analyzed using a thematic approach. The results show that the forms of bullying experienced include verbal, relational, and institutional, with psychological impacts such as stress, anxiety, and social withdrawal. BPI contributes to recovery through a spiritual approach based on the values of patience, trust in God, and self-purification, which is realized through mentoring, religious discussions, and character development. Although not yet supported by a strong institutional system, this service is considered practically beneficial in building students' mental resilience. The limitations of this study lie in the limited number of informants and the narrow scope of the study, so further research with a broader scope and stronger methodological design is recommended to strengthen the validity of the findings.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze and compare the dynamics of moral development for adolescents through a spiritual approach at the Al-Wasliyah Orphanage and the Muhammadiyah Orphanage in Medan City. The study focuses on the approach, methods, results of coaching, and supporting and hindering factors faced by each orphanage. The research was conducted using a qualitative approach and comparative analysis of data from interviews and observations. Data were collected through interviews and observations of eight informants, consisting of the orphanage head and resident adolescents. The findings reveal that Al-Wasliyah emphasizes habituation and moral modeling through the emotional relationship between caregivers and children, hile Muhammadiyah adopts a more structured, institutional approach involving collective evaluation. This difference creates dynamics in the indicators of moral success: Al-Wasliyah assesses through worship practices and personal attitudes, while Muhammadiyah does so through staff participation and reports The study emphasizes the need to integrate affective and structural strategies in adolescent moral development. Practically, this research offers insights for orphanage managers to design reflective.

Abstract

This article explores "Syair Ibarat dan Khabar Kiamat" by Syeikh Abdurrahman Shiddiq as a valuable resource for Islamic education and the promotion of religious moderation among young children, deeply rooted in local wisdom. Employing a qualitative-hermeneutic approach, the study reveals that the syair conveys essential Islamic values, including the shahādah (testimony of faith), ṣalāh (prayer), ṣawm (fasting), zakāh (almsgiving), and ḥajj (pilgrimage). Furthermore, it advocates for values of moderation such as tolerance, patriotism, resistance to radicalism, and cultural adaptability. The analysis draws upon various theoretical frameworks, including al-Attas's concept of ta'dīb, Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences, Gadamer's philosophical hermeneutics, Nurcholish Madjid's inclusive Islam, Lickona's character education, and the value clarification technique (VCT). The findings indicate that the syair functions not only as a piece of religious poetry but also as a culturally embedded moral resource that shapes children’s spirituality. It harmonizes Islamic teachings with cultural traditions and fosters a sense of national identity. Consequently, this syair can serve as an effective pedagogical strategy for promoting contextual and moderate Islamic character education in early childhood settings.

Abstract

The consumptive lifestyle of the younger generation in Sigara-gara Village, Patumbak Sub-district is influenced by the rapid development of technology and materialistic tendencies. This can be seen by the purchase of goods that are not basic needs in order to build self-image and fulfill social pressure. This research aims to find out how the younger generation perceives and practices maqam qanaah in overcoming their consumerism. The method used is a qualitative approach that focuses on case studies. Data was collected through in-depth interviews with six young people aged 20-27 years old. After the data was collected, it was analyzed using the Miles and Hubarman model. The findings of this study show that maqam qanaah can be actualized through three ways, first by providing religious education through religious studies and examples from parents. Second, by changing the mindset to be more grateful and being in an environment that supports the value of qanaah. Third, wise financial management by keeping a record of expenses every month to avoid impulsive buying and saving for the future. These findings are contextual and cannot be generalized widely due to the small number of respondents and the limited scope of the region. Therefore, other research is needed with a broader approach and coverage area. This research makes a significant contribution to the development of contextual Sufism, by connecting maqam qanaah with the challenges of modern life.

Abstract

Mental health issues among students are a significant concern, especially when facing academic, social, and personal pressures during their studies. This research aims to explore how the practice of prayer can serve as a form of spiritual support in maintaining the mental stability of students. The research was conducted at the State Islamic University of North Sumatra (UINSU) Medan using a descriptive qualitative approach. Data was collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation from seven students from various study programs aged 20-24 years. Data analysis was conducted in three stages: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The research results show that prayer is able to provide inner peace, reduce anxiety, and significantly improve mood. This effectiveness depends on the quality of its execution, especially if done with awareness of spiritual needs and reverence. Conversely, prayer performed solely as a formal routine without inner presence does not have a significant psychological impact. This finding implies the importance of strengthening the quality of worship as part of a holistic approach to addressing students' mental health issues.
