Abstract

Background: Uric acid is a final product or a waste that is resulted from the metabolism of purines. A high level of uric acid (hyperuricemia) will cause several health problems, such as vascular inflammation, smooth muscle proliferation, and vascular lesion in kidneys. The syzygium polyanthum leaves contain bioactive substances that may affect the level of uric acid in blood. Objective: This study aimed to determine the influence of boiled water of syzygium polyanthum leaves to the changes of uric acid levels in the target area of Puskesmas Pandak 1 Bantul. Methods: This study employed pre- and post-test without control group design. The population consisted of all patients with hyperuricemia in the target area of Puskesmas Pandak 1 Bantul. Sample was selected with a concecutive sampling, gaining a total number of 24 respondents. Data were analyzed with the Wilcoxon test. The dose of boiled water of syzygium polyanthum leaves intake was 0.36g/ KgBW, once a day for 14 days. Result: This research showed that the boiled water of syzygium polyanthum leaves decreased hyperuricemia (uric acid levels), along with the significancy value of 0.009 (p <0.05). At the pre-test time, the average level of uric acid reached 7.279 mg/dl, and after the treatment, it decreased to 6.76 mg/dl. Conclusion: This study has established evidence that the boiled water of syzygium polyanthum leaves is able to decrease hyperuricemia (uric acid level in blood). Keywords: Syzygium polyanthum, boiled water of syzygium polyanthum leaves, hyperuricemia

Abstract

Background:Malnutrition is a common problem in chronic renal failure (CRF) patients with or without Diabetes Mellitus (DM). An assessment of nutritional status in CRF patients is encouraged to see the level of its severity. The general parameters for assessing nutritional status are serum albumin and hemoglobin. Objective:The objective of this research was to investigate the differences on thenutritional status of CRF patients with Diabetes Mellitus (DM) compared to those without DM at PKU Muhammadiyah Hospital Yogyakarta. Methods:This was a comparative descriptive research applying accidental sampling and was conducted for 6 months (June-November 2014). The main measuring devices were patients’ medical records and laboratory results of albumin and hemoglobin levels. Sampleof this study consisted of 30 respondents. Independent t-test was applied to analyze the differences of albumin and hemoglobin levels in both groups. Result:The test result showed that the albumin (p=0.917) and hemoglobin levels (p=0.168) of CRF patients without DM and that of CRF patients with DM were not significantly different. Conclusion:CRF patients with and without DM had low level of albumin and hemoglobin. Nurses shouldbe more careful in regulating fluidbalance to reduce pulmonary edema. Keywords: Chronic Renal Failure (CRF), diabetes mellitus(DM), albumin, hemoglobin

Objective: This study aimed to investigate several risk factors for pneumonia in children under five years old in Maumere, Flores, NTT. Methods: This sudy employed collaborative qualitative-quantitative design. Data on the occurrence of pneumonia were drawn from the medical record of TC Hillers Maumere hospital, gathering information from January to July 2015. Research also involved direct observation to residents housing and interviews with health care providers and locals. Research population was children under five with a history of pneumonia, consisted of 152 children. Data were alayzed with a univariate method. Results: The majority of respondents with pneumonia were male (53.3%), co-morbid with iron deficiency anemia (20.4%), aged under 12 months (69.1%), well-nourished (56.6%), and waiting for 1-3 days at home before going to the hospital (47.5%). Direct observation suggested that Maumere was a dry and dusty area. The majority of housing roof was zinc, with topsoil floor, house ventilation were not properly adjusted, houses were over-populated, and residents still used wood and gasoline to cook. Abstract

Background: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a progressive lung illness with the main complaints of breathlessness and decreased activitiestolerance, which consequentially worsen the quality of life (QoL). COPD management aims to improve the QoLby means of rehabilitation programs. Objective: The study focused on determining the impact of physical activity(6-Minute Walk Test/6-MWT)and the combination of Pursed-Lip Breathing (PLB) before 6-MWTon COPD patients’QoL. Methods: This study occupieda quasi-experimentaldesign, which involved70 respondents, divided into 3 groups, i.e 2 intervention groups (30 respondents each) and one control group (10 respondents). Results:The majority of respondents were male (71%), aged 60-74 (56%), had normalBMI (48%), and were former smokers (59%).After 6 weeks of intervention, meaningful differences were found in the QoLbefore and after the intervention in bothgroups:6-MWT(p=0.000) and combined (p=0.000). The ordinal logistic regression test resultedthe combined intervention hadstronger effect on the quality of life (p=0.000, 47.1% contribution)than 6-MWT (p=0.012, 35.8% contribution). Respondents’ characteristics that impacted on the quality of life were smoking history and period of CPOD (p<0.05, OR: 11,376; OR: 49,75, respectively). Conclusion:It can be concluded that PLB before 6-MWT is an effective training to improve QoL of people with COPD. Keywords: Pursed-lip breathing; QoL;COPD

Abstract

Background: Children development is measured by four aspects; motoric skills, language, behavior, and mental development. Early childhood development was influenced by maternal nutrition during pregnancy, infant nutrition, stimulation, and parents’ knowledge. Objective: This study aimed to describe the development of children aged 6-60 months subject to anemia and stimulation through early childhood education. Method: The study was quantitative descriptive with 158 toddlers involved as respondents. Tools and materials used in this study were digital haemometer and DDST sheets. Result: Toddlers with normal development and suspect were majority experienced mild anemia (34.81%, 14,56%, respectively). While toddlers who followed early childhood education, majority had normal development (45.57%). Non-participating early childhood education tended to have developmental suspect (23.4%). Three toddlers with severe anemia (Hb 7.2 to 7.9 g%) had normal development, presumably due to early childhood education and one toddler with severe anemia (Hb 6 gr%) and not attending early education had suspected development. Conclusion: Toddlers with or without anemia had equal development, while toddlers who were given stimulation through early childhood education tended to have normal development. Key Word: Early childhood development, anemia, stimulation of early childhood education
