Abstract

Language change is a significant impact of the evolution of the times and technological advances, facilitating global cultural communication and interaction. One example of this phenomenon is gairaigo in Japanese, which is an absorbent word from a foreign language and is very commonly used in everyday communication, especially in digital media like YouTube content. Gairaigo plays an important role in modern Japanese, especially in areas influenced by global trends such as makeup. This research aims to study the process of forming the use of gairaigo in reviewing makeup on the YouTube channel Nanako in the study of morphology. Data taken from YouTube with the title "[寝起き1秒] 春色ナチュラルだけどしっかり盛れる新作プチプラメイク [Neoki 1-byō] shunshoku nachurarudakedo shikkari moreru shinsaku puchipurameiku". The theory used in this study is the theory of Tsujimura concerning the formation of the word morphology in the Japanese language. The research method used is qualitative descriptive with data collection techniques through recording, recording, and validating data by native speakers. The analysis showed that there were 28 Gairaigo words used in the video. These words undergo three types of morphological processes: compounding, clipping, and borrowing. Examples of these are ノーズシャドウ (nozu shadō), コントゥア (kontua), and ハイライトする. (hairaito suru). The findings showed the Japanese language's adaptation to foreign words through phonetic and morphological adjustments, enriching Japanese vocabulary and reflecting complex social and cultural dynamics. A deeper understanding of these morphological processes can make a significant contribution to the linguistic and literary study of language contacts and language changes as a result of globalization.

Abstract

Gender-differentiated language use in Japanese stems from traditions and social norms that have developed over time. However, usage  of gender-neutral Japanese is still not very popular in Japan. This article aims to provide an insight into gendered language use, particularly gender-based language use. The method used to write this article is a qualitative approach with an analytical descriptive method. The data is then collected through literature study. Also, the data sources used in this study are books, journals, articles and online news related to the uses of neutral Japanese in Japanese society. In this article, the author analyzes the data obtained from the book "Queer Japanese: Gender and Sexual Identities through Linguistic Practices" by Hideko Abe published in 2010 and “Japanese Language and Gender: An Introduction" by Kadek Eva Krishna Adnyani published in 2019. Based on these two books, it can be concluded that the use of gender-neutral language in Japanese is crucial in creating gender equality and inclusivity for all individuals regardless of their gender. However, language change is not the only solution to creating gender equality. There needs to be a broader effort in changing mindsets and social norms that are not inclusive and respectful of gender diversity.

Abstract

This study aims to find out about the speech acts of refusal that are generally used in Japanese families. The research method used is a descriptive method with pragmatic equivalent data analysis. The object of research is the drama Kyou Mo Iyagarase Bentou. In the drama Kyou Mo Iyagarase Bentou, it was found that speech acts of rejection in Japanese families almost do not use the concept of aimai to protect the feelings of the interlocutor, while speech acts of rejection in Japanese society in general are delivered politely and carefully and even seem ambiguous. Japanese people usually do not want to offend their conversation partner, in accordance with Japanese culture with the concept of aimai, but statements of rejection within the family are conveyed as they are. From the research results, seven (7) indirect rejection speech acts were found in dialogues 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7, two (2) direct rejection speech acts in dialogues 1 and 6. This indicates that even though when refusing you do not think about the feelings of the conversation partner, you still consider the feelings of the conversation partner by not directly stating the refusal that is being conveyed. Keyword : speech act, refusal, drama, direct, indirect

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the process of Himura Kenshin as the main character to achieve his existence by referring to Heidegger's theory of existentialism in Keishi Otomo’s Rurouni Kenshin film series. Rurouni Kenshin film series tells the life journey of Hitokiri Battosai, a samurai who worked as a government assassin, but decided to become a wanderer and stop killing in the Meiji era. The method used in this research is qualitative content analysis method. According to Heidegger, human (dasein) achieves their existence after going through three stages, namely moodness, fallenness, and sorge. The moodness stage guides Kenshin in making decisions to achieve his desired state in the world. The stage of fallenness allows Kenshin to understand himself and realize his existence. The stage of sorge, which is defined as 'care', involves anxiety about future possibilities as well as the urge to care for the world. Kenshin, as a human being, desires to exist and find his identity to harmonize with the world around him. Kenshin feels responsible for his past sins and decides to atone for them by helping others. After passing through all these stages, Kenshin achieves self-existence by being recognized as Himura Kenshin.
