Journal of English Language Teaching is a journal published by English Language Teaching Study Program of FBS Universitas Negeri Padang. This journal is published three times a year (March, June, and September). The main purpose of this journal is to advance and foster English Language Teaching or education, research, and professionalism in Indonesia. The journal provides research and paper to increase awareness, consideration and analysis of issues in Teaching English as Foreign Language, and also promotes the interchange of ideas, and comparative studies in this field.

Speaking skill is the main thing to be mastered as the language teaching need oral production result. However, speaking skill can’t be achieved easily as long as the use of inappropriate technique especially to the first formal school’s learner young learner. Thus, teacher needs to give interesting technique so students could achieve speaking ability without any obstacle. One of technique to teach speaking is the use of Pass Ball Game. This activity involves the most favourite of children toys; ball. Students will play with the ball in line with the performing speaking skill. As a result, students will consider that English language is easy to be mastered and interesting lesson.

This paper describes the activity of sharing information in study speaking in the class. This paper is about the use of draw the bank robbers game in teaching writing descriptive texts in Junior High School. The purpose of this paper is to explain that draw the bank robbers game can be used by English teachers of Junior High School in teaching writing descriptive texts. Before applying this game, the teacher has to decide an interesting topic so that the students are enthusiastic to do this game. This game is used in pairs, the teacher provides a short description about the object will be described; the object can be a person, thing or place. Then, the teacher asks the students to draw the picture from the teacher’s description. After that, the teacher asks them to draw the new picture based on their own version about the same topic and write a descriptive text from that picture. This game can attract and motivate the students in learning writing; in addition, it is easy for the students to convey their ideas in writing descriptive text.

The purpose of this research were to (1) see the listening strategies used by the students of English department UNP, (2) see the strategies used by the students with higher test score (successful listeners) and the strategies used by the students with lower test score (unsuccessful listeners). The design of this research was descriptive research with population were the second-year students who have taken the Listening 1 subject. The sample of this research was the K4 class with 19 members. The instrument used was the SILL questionnaire which has 50 statements. The result of this research showed that the strategies used by the students from the most to the least were metacogntive strategies, cognitive strategies, compensation strategies, affective strategies, social strategies, and memory strategies. Students with higher test score were shown to use metacognitive strategies with high intensity, followed by cognitive strategies, affective strategies, social strategies, memory strategies and compensation strategies. Students with lower test score were shown to use the metacognitive strategies in medium intensity, followed by affective strategies, compensation strategies, social strategies, cognitive strategies and memory strategies. This paper talks about the use of Action Bingo game in helping the students of Elementary School Grade 6 in mastering vocabularies related to verbs in English. The writer will explain about the procedures and the advantages of Action Bingo Game. This game could be played individually or in pair. In this game, the teacher distributes one board that has 16 columns in each board, there will be one verb in one column. The teacher mimes every single verb in the board randomly. The students give a mark in the column that consists of verb that has been mimed by the teacher. If a student has marked four squares in a row :horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, they should call out “BINGO!.” The game is over when every column has been marked. This game could make English learning process become more interesting. Furthermore, this game could increase the students’ motivation and ease them in mastering the meanings of vocabularies related to verbs in English.

This research is a descriptive research which is intended to reveal the cultural aspects and how cultural contents are presented in reading passages. The data in this research was obtained from the English textbooks entitled Bahasa Inggris for Senior High School grade X-XII written based on curriculum 2013 by Kemendikbud RI. This research employed the descriptive approach with the instrument was the cultural content checklist. After conducting the research, the cultural aspects found in the reading passages were religion and religious rituals; history and politics; foods and drinks; ecology; economy; leisure time, music, and arts; dressing; science and literature; social behaviour, and etiquette; family and male-female relationship; naming systems; geographical names; cultural products; and tribe. Based on the data in this research, it was revealed that Indonesian cultural contents were dominantly used in the reading passages. Furthermore, the presentation of cultural contents was found in forms of monologues, dialogues, and pictures. Since Indonesian cultural contents dominated the reading passages, the evaluation towards these three textbooks needs to be conducted. The cultural contents of the target culture need to be added into the reading passages.

The purpose of the research is to describe the quality of multimedia (PowerPoint and video) used by English teachers at SMAN 01 Kamang Magek and also to find out the problems which faced by the English teachers in constructing multimedia in learning and teaching process. This research was an evaluating research. The subject of this research was all of the English teachers and the document files (softcopy of PowerPoint and video which was used by the teachers). The data was collected through the evaluation checklist which was used in order to know the quality of multimedia (PowerPoint and video) used by the English teachers and the interview and observation was aimed to know the the problems which faced by the English teachers in constructing PowerPoint and video in learning and teaching process. In the evaluation checklist, there were two categories in evaluating the quality of PowerPoint and video; they were the quality in its content and the presentation. Based on the finding of the research, it was found that teh PowerPoint had very good quality in its content and the presentation had good quality. Besides that, the video had very good quality in its content and its presentation. In addition, it was found that the English teachers had lack ability in constructing the PowerPoint and video and also in using the technological devices of multimedia.

This research aimed to figure out whether CSR gives positive effect toward VIII Grade students’ ability in reading at SMP N 11 Padang. Since this reserach was experimental research, the sample of this research were VIII B as the control group and VIII C as the experimental group selected by using cluster sampling. The data of this research was reading test (posttest) scores which were analyzed by using t-test. It was found that there was significant difference on student’ reading comprehension of grade VIII students who were taught by using Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) and the students taught by using conventional technique. The result showed that tcount was 6.7 and ttable was 2.00 in the level of significant 0.05 which means tcount was higher than ttable. Therefore, the null htpothesis (H0) was rejected and research hyphothesis (H1) was accepted. Finally, it could be concluded that CSR (Collaborative Strategic Reading) gives possitive effect toward students’ ability in reading.

One of important skills in learning English is speaking ability. By speaking, the students can communicate what they are thinking. However, most of students have difficulties in speaking since they learn English as a foreign language. Therefore, a good and interesting way is needed to attract the students in learning speaking. Story Starter Hot Potato Game is a good and interesting activity that can be used in teaching English to improve the students’ speaking ability. In playing Story Starter Hot Potato Game, the students are grouped into circles. The teacher then play a music and read a sentence to a student. Each of the students should continue the sentence in turn. Here, the students are practicing speaking because each of the students should say a sentence to build the story based on the sentence given by the previous person. When the music stops, the student that has not finished his sentence yet will be lost so the last survivor of this game will be the winner. In playing this game, the students should be able to think critically and fastly. This way would be able to motivate the students to speak in the class, so the students’ speaking ability would be improved and be better.

Lack of the students’ reading comprehension ability toward English text that they read is commonly influenced by two main factors, they are come from students’ side and teacher’s side. First, the factors that come from the students’ itself such us lack of students’ reading motivation, it affects less of effort that they do in getting deeper comprehension. Besides, lack of exercise that students do also make them do not use to comprehend the text, most of students often cheat the others when they make reading exercise. As a result, they are unable to explain what exactly they read and write as answers from the question that are constructed based on the text. Next factor is teacher’s factor, the method that teacher use still do not motivate students to interact actively with the text that they read. As the effect, students assume that reading is boring activity because it does not make sense for them. To solve those problems, the writer recommends a reading comprehension strategy called as making connections. This strategy guide students to connect the information that they find in the text with themselves, the other texts, and the world, so they can interact and involve actively with the text. The teacher can starts the lesson by activating students’ background knowledge and model how to apply this strategy. The connections that students made will help students to comprehend the text and it is hoped that they reading comprehension ability increase as well
