Abstract

Corn kernels (Zea mays L.) are plants serving as a natural sunscreen due to the presence of phenol and flavonoid compounds. The sunscreen compounds are able to protect skin from the effect of ultraviolet ray emitted by the sun. The purpose of this study was to determine the activity of corn kernels (Zea mays L.) as a in vitro sunscreen by the UV-Vis spectrophotometry method. The study was started by maceration of extracted seed samples using three various solvents, i.e., hexane, ethyl acetate and ethanol 70%. In the preliminary test, it was found that 70% positive ethyl acetate and ethanol extract contained phenol and flavonoid compounds, so that the step proceeded to the sunscreen activity test. The sunscreen activity test was determined based on the value of sun protecting factory value tested at wavelengths from 290 to 320 nm, the percentage of erythema transmission (% Te), and the percentage of pigmentation transmission (%Tp) values tested at wavelengths of 292.5-372.5 nm at 5 nm intervals. From these tests, the results revealed that the best activity was indicated by a concentration of 600 ppm for ethyl acetate extract and 70% ethanol with an average SPF value of 24.1724.18 ± 0.0852 (ultra protection) and 10.23 ± 0.021 (maximum protection). Te% of ethyl acetate and ethanol extract 70% were 3.92 ± 0.015 (extra protection) and .62 ± 0.026 (regular syringe), respectively. % Tp in 70% ethyl acetate and ethanol extract gets 19.61 ± 0.527 (total block) and 32.66 ± 2,594 (total block), respectively. The statistical analysis revealed that the normality and homogeneity test of significance value 0.05, meaning that the data distribution was not normal and homogeneous. By that, the step continued to the Kruskal-Wallis test. Based on the Kruskal-Wallis test, the significance value 0.05 showed that the significant differences in the ethanol and ethyl acetate samples per concentration with the SPF,% Te and% Tp values obtained was significant.

Abstract

National formulary is a list of medicines compiled by a national committee established by the Minister of Health based on cutting-edge, efficacious, safe, and affordable scientific evidence referred for drug use by national health insurance. This study aims to determine the evaluation of drug prescribing in the Hospital formulary. This retrospective study involved subjects qualified for the inclusion criteria i.e. 73 sheet recipes in August - December 2019. some prescribed drugs that are not listed in the hospital formulary in the following percentage: August (100%), September (60%), October (50%), November (81%), and December (65%) with the average of 71%. This indicates that the prescription does not conform to the hospital formulary regulation of 100%. In conclusion, there are some drugs prescribed by the doctor that is not conformed to the hospital formulary, which means tight supervision for the prescribing is required.

Abstract

Tuberculosis is an infectious disease caused by bacteria known as mycobacterium tuberculosis. In Indonesia, tuberculosis is the third common public health problem the prevalence of the disease in this country is among the highest in the world after China and India. Sufficient knowledge of diseases and medicines correlates with the result of therapy in general. Knowledge about drugs is important for patients since it helps them to consume drugs properly (which result in maximum therapy) and to avoid complications. The purpose of this descriptive study is to determine the level of knowledge of patients suffering from tuberculosis in the tuberculosis treatment program at Bulango Utara Puskesmas (Community Health Center) by a questionnaire. It applied a cross-sectional approach with primary data obtained from the result of a sample questionnaire totaling 24 patients taken by saturated sampling. The result of this present study reveal that the level knowledge of patients with tuberculosis in the area is still relatively low at 75%, while only 25% is classified as moderate.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is defined as a disease or metabolic disorder characterized by high blood glucose levels. The management of diabetes mellitus therapy in the community is diverse, ranging from synthetic drugs to herbal medicines. Many people assume that herbal medicines are relatively cheaper and safer compared to synthetic drugs. One of the plants commonly used as herbal medicine is Lamtoro. This research aimed to determine the effectiveness of Lamtoro leaves (LeucaenaleucocephalaL) on decreasing blood glucose levels on lab mice (Mus musculus L). This study used 27 male house mice divided into nine groups; each group consisted of three male house mice, i.e., glucose control (group I), negative control Na-CMC 1% w/v (group II), Positive control of chlamyd Gliben 1.56% w/v (group III), administered N-Hexan extract of Lamtoro leave 1% w/v (group IV), the extract of N-Heksan Lamtoro leaf 2.5% w/v (group V),  the extract of N-Heksan Lamtoro leaf 5% w/v (group VI), ethanol extract of Lamtoro leaf 1% w/v (group VII), ethanol extract of Lamtoro leaf 2.5% b/v (group VIII), and ethanol extract of Lamtoro leaves 5% w/v (group IX). The results were analyzed using the One Way ANOVA test. It showed that N-Hexane and Ethanol extract of Lamtoro leaves with a concentration of 1% w/v, 2.5% w/v and 5% w/v was able to reduce the blood glucose levels. The extract which had the best activity in reducing blood glucose levels was found in ethanol extract 96% at a concentration of 5% w/v with a decrease in the percentage by 59%. This was because the 96% ethanol extract contained a number of secondary metabolite compounds, i.e., flavonoids, alkaloids and tannins as blood glucose levels reducer

Abstract

Endophytic bacteria are microbes that grow on plant tissue and can form a colony on plant tissue without producing a negative effect on the host. The endophytic bacteria have the potential to have the same activity and produce secondary metabolite as their host. The root of bitter melon (momordica charantia L.) has been known to have antibacterial activity, thus enabling the presence of endophytic bacteria, which also have antibacterial potential. This present research aims to isolate and characterize endophytic bacteria found in bitter melon (Momordica charantia L. The method used in the isolation stage is direct lanting so that the endophytic bacteria are obtained from plant tissue; macroscopic and microscopic characterization stage; inhibition test stage; inhibition test stage using disc method (Kirby-Bauer). In accordance with the results of macroscopic and microscopic characterization, the two bacteria indicate different characteristics.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a severe condition, chronic in nature, that occurs when there is an increase in blood glucose levels (GDS) 200 mg/dL or hyperglycemic conditions. Some plants are reported to have anti-diabetic effects. One of the examples is seagrass (Enhalus acoroides), which has α-glucosidase enzyme inhibitory effects in vitro. The community often uses it as traditional medicine. This present work explores the anti-diabetic activity of ethyl acetate extract of seagrass (Enhalus acoroides) leaves against male mice (Mus musculus) charged with 90% sucrose solution. It employed the oral sucrose tolerance test (OSTT) methodology. Activity tests on mice were carried out in five treatment groups, namely: group I or a negative control (Na-CMC 1% w/v); group II or a positive control (acarbose); group III (ethyl acetate extract dose 50 mg/kg BW); group IV ( ethyl acetate extract at a dose of 150 mg/kg BW), and; group V (ethyl acetate extract at a dose of 250 mg/kg BW). All data were analyzed by using a one-way ANOVA statistical test. The results show that the ethyl acetate extract of seagrass leaves can inhibit the absorption of sucrose, in which the most significant total inhibition occurred at a dose of 250 mg/kg BW, i.e., 68 mg/dL. A substantial inhibition was also found at a dose of 150 mg/kg BW, which was 82 mg/dL and at a dose of 50 mg/dL or 103 mg/dL. In conclusion, the ethyl acetate extract of seagrass leaves has anti-diabetic activity.
