Abstract

Cell culture studies on drugs and natural compounds are commonly employed for early compound screening, assessing their potential therapeutic and immunomodulatory effects in vitro. Many of these compounds have limited solubility in water and are typically dissolved in lipophilic solvents. Consequently, it is crucial to employ a biocompatible and non-toxic solvent for cell viability. Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is a widely utilized solvent in in vitro testing. This study aims to investigate the effect of DMSO on the viability of HeLa and MCF-7 cell lines. The MTT method was employed to assess cytotoxic effects on the HeLa and MCF-7 cell lines. The results revealed that concentrations of 1% and 2% DMSO significantly reduced the viability of MCF-7 cells (p<0.05) compared to the control after 24 hours of incubation. Conversely, the viability of HeLa cell lines exposed to 1% and 2% DMSO concentrations did not significantly differ from the control after 24 hours. Thus, concentrations of 1% and 2% DMSO exhibited cytotoxicity towards MCF-7 cells, while no such effect was observed in HeLa cells.

Abstract

The problem of malnutrition in toddlers is still quite high, based on the results of SSGI 2021, the problem of malnutrition in Indonesia for the age group 0-59 months is 17%, while the prevalence of undernourished toddlers in South Sumatra is 15.7% and for the prevalence of undernourished toddlers less in the city of Palembang by 16.1%. The study aimed to find out the effect of giving tempeh and red bean cookies on the increase in undernourished toddlers' weight in the Working Area of the Taman Bacaan Palembang Health Center. Methods of research is a Quasi Experiment with a pretest-posttest control group design. The statistical tests used were the t-dependent test and the independent t-test which were analyzed by univariate and bivariate. The results showed The average sample weight before the intervention in the treatment group was 8.88 kg to 9.33 kg after the intervention. Whereas in the comparison group, the weight before the intervention was 9.66 kg to 9.95 kg after the intervention. The results of the statistical test (t-independent) obtained a p-value of 0.006 so it can be concluded that there was an effect of giving tempeh and red bean cookies on weight changes for undernourished toddlers in the working area of the Taman Bacaan Palembang Health Center. From the results of the study, it was suggested to parents of toddlers to continue consuming high-calorie foods such as formula cookies, tempeh flour, and red beans so that they can gradually increase their toddler's weight. Keywords: malnutrition, body weight, cookies with the addition of tempe flour and red beans

Abstract

Obesity is a risk factor for developing Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD). It occurs due to the accumulation of fat resulting from an imbalance between energy intake and expenditure. Changes in the lifestyle of adolescents, who tend to prefer fast food and have limited physical activity, put them at risk of obesity. The development period of Covid-19 gave rise to policies that limited activities and encouraged efforts to improve nutritional intake to minimize the risk of transmission. This study aims to determine the pattern of consumption of food sources containing trans fatty acids among students attending Private Higher Education institutions in Bengkulu City during the Covid-19 pandemic era. Research Method: This study is a survey method as a preliminary investigation into the consumption patterns of food sources containing trans fatty acids among new students of private universities in Bengkulu City during the Covid-19 pandemic. The sample consisted of 40 students, selected using a purposive sampling method. The consumption patterns were assessed using food frequency questionnaires (FFQs) distributed online via Google forms. The data was processed descriptively. Results: The study found a high proportion of consumption frequency in dairy and processed foods, as well as ice cream and beverages. Fried foods also showed a high consumption frequency, including fried tofu and tempeh, fried eggs, bakwan, fish, and fried chicken. Furthermore, products containing high-frequency Hydrogenated Vegetable Oils (HVO) consumed were bread, biscuits, and wafers. Conclusion: The study concludes that processed dairy products, ice cream, and fried foods are consumed frequently among the participants. However, the consumption of vegetables occurs only >3 times per day, with a focus on green vegetables. Future research should delve into the relationship between consumption patterns and adolescent nutritional status and lipid profile. Keywords: consumption frequency, trans fatty acids, adolescents
