Abstract

Buffering capacity of saliva plays a very important role in maintaining the saliva pH. The saliva pH affected by the mechanical and chemical stimulation of the oral cavity such as rinse with 3% green tea extract. The purpose of this study is to know the increased of saliva pH after rinsing with 3% green tea extract for three minutes. Experimental research using pre test-post test control group design was conducted on students and patients at Dentistry Hospital Faculty of Dentistry Mahasaraswati University. 44 samples divided into four groups by simple random sampling technique. The average of saliva pH post rinsing with distilled water for three minutes 6,74+0,13; 3% Green tea extract for one minute 6,81+0,12; two minutes 6,96+0,13 and three minutes 7,12+0,12. Analysis by One Way Anova test showed p= 0,000, this means that after the treatment was given to all group, the saliva pH were significantly different. LSD test showed that the increased saliva pH after rinsing with 3% green tea extract for three minutes were higher than one minute and two minutes. The Conclusion is rinsing with 3% green tea extract for three minutes increases saliva pH.

Abstract

Dental caries is an endemic disease that high prevalence and severity. Bacteria, such as Streptococcus mutans are the flora of the mouth, potentially cause caries by producing acid that could demineralize enamel of the tooth. The aim of the study wasw to prove the decreasing of the Streptococcus mutans by rinsing 10-days fermented kombucha tea. The design of this study was experimental Randomized pretest and posttest. These research used two groups:each groups contain 13 subjects. One group as a control and one group as a treatment group. The control group rinsed with sterile distilled water and the treatment group rinsed with 10-days fermented kombucha tea. Datas were analized with paired T-test. Result showed that mean of S. mutans bacteria after treated (rinse 10-days fermented kombucha tea) significantly decreased (p <0.05). It was concluded that rinsing with 10-days fermented kombucha tea could decrease number of Streptococcus mutans. Further research was needed to determine the mechanism of kombucha tea.

Abstract

Ozone (O3) is a gas that naturally exists in the earth's atmosphere formed from oxygen molecules and oxygen atoms can decompose quickly into oxygen. Ozone is a strong disinfectant and can kill 99% of bacteria, fungi, viruses quickly. Ozone therapy in the medical field is used to treat: vascular abnormalities, myocardial infarction, diabetes mellitus, wounds, and gynecological disorders. While in dentistry it is used as an alternative therapy for endodontic treatment, pit caries and fissure, root caries and cervical caries, caries on the tooth surface, deep caries care, root sensitivity, orthodontics, soft tissue treatment, and mandibular fractures. In the treatment of caries, there are still many doctors who treat with conventional techniques. The treatment process uses burial which can cause pain and fear especially in children. Ozone therapy as a safe and effective method for preventing damage to healthy tissue and caring for teeth by restoring the remineralization process and can reduce pain and fear.

Abstract

Tooth extraction though always not cause problems, but can cause some complications, one of which is endocarditis infection. The infection is caused by Staphylococcus aureus that causes abnormalities of the heart valves. The use of herbal ingredients to be an alternative to antibacterial bacteria as a result of increased resistance to antibiotics. Mahkota Dewa fruit (Phaleria macrocarpa) was selected as an antibacterial because it is active substances contains such as alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, and polyphenols. The purpose of this study was to determine the effective concentration of the extract Mahkota Dewa fruit as an antibacterial against Staphylococcus aureus that can be made of a product in the form of a gel that can be applied to a tooth extraction wound to prevent endocarditis infection. The study is in vitro an experimental laboratory approaches Post test Only Control Group Design. Samples are distinguished by the concentration differences of the Mahkota Dewa fruit extract are 60%, 70%, 80%, 90% and 100%. The results showed that the Mahkota Dewa fruit extract concentration of 70% effective as an antibacterial against Staphylococcus aureus. The effectiveness of the extract Phaleria influenced by the ability of the active substance content of flavonoids lysis of bacterial cells.

Abstract

There are many oral surgery procedure that uses a variety of flap. The flap is opening of mucosa and gingival separated from the underlying tissue to expand the field of view and access to the bone and root surface. There are several designs of fullthickness flap, partial, high semilunar flap, flap mid-level and the envelope flap. Each design of the flap has the thickness flap position advantages and disadvantages that can be used in a wide variety of surgical procedures. Flap design is determined by the operator, and also depends on the purpose of the surgery. The entrance to the bone and root surface tissue, as well as the final position of the flap must be considered in designing the flap. By knowing the technique of flap design will help to minimize surgical trauma that would happen later.

Abstract

Acrylic resin denture base are recently used as material for removable denture base, as well as thermoplastic nylon denture base that have flexibility and good esthetic. Both of these materials have porosity where food debris can attach and forming plaques. Plaque is the main habitat of oral microorganisms. One of the most frequent oral bacteria is Streptococcus mutans. Plaque and microorganism on denture could make an inflammation on soft tissue underneath the denture called denture stomatitis. The aim of this study was to understand the amount of Streptococcus mutans on thermoplastic nylon and heat cured acrylic resin removable denture base plate with 24 hours and 48 hours contact time. This study used 6 thermoplastic nylon plate and 6 heat cured acrylic resin square shaped with 10x10x1 mm size, and heat cured acrylic resin as control. Plates were soaked on tubes with Streptococcus mutans suspension at 24 hours and 48 hours contact time then all the objects were count. This study was an experimental laboratories and the method was randomized post-test only control group design federer. One Way Anova was used as the data analysis. The result shows statistically different of Streptococcus mutans amount on thermoplastic nylon and heat cured acrylic resin removable denture base plate with 24 hours and 48 hours contact time (p<0.05). Porosity of denture base may lead accumulation of Streptococcus mutans and contact time predispose bacterial growth. It is concluded that Streptococcus mutans amount on thermoplastic nylon removable denture base plate is less than heat cured acrylic resin and it is increase along with the contact time.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Heat cured acrylic resin is the most commonly used material in making denture bases. Acrylic resin is in contact with saliva, drinks and food so that the denture is a place for the formation of plaque and an increase in microorganisms, namely the fungus Candida albicans and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, which can cause Denture stomatitis. Papaya leaf extract containing flavonoids, saponins, tannins and alkaloids can act as anti-bacteria. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of papaya leaf extract (Carica papaya L.) on the amount of growth of Staphylococcus aureus on a heat cured acrylic resin denture plate. The study was post test only with control group design. Samples were contaminated with Staphylococcus aureus suspension and incubated, then inserted into a test tube, then immersed for 3 minutes, then inserted into Saboroud's broth and continued with calculation of the number of colonies. Data analyzed with One Way Anova difference test obtained a value of p <0.05, which mean that the number of Staphylococcus aureus colonies between treatment groups and control groups had a significant difference. The LSD test found a significant difference (ρ <0.05) between aquades and papaya leaf extract 2.5%, 5%, 10% and fittydent®. Whereas at 10% concentration when compared with fittydent® there was no significant difference (ρ> 0.05). From the results of the study it can be concluded that immersing heat cured acrylic resin plate in papaya leaf extract can inhibit Staphylococcus aureus growth, according to the increase in concentration where the most effective concentration was 10%.
