Abstract

The research was motivated by the declining condition of tourism in Indonesia due to Covid-19, but it has the potential to develop further. Therefore, this study aims to describe the prospect and strategies for developing tourism during COVID-19. This research used a qualitative approach with descriptive methods by taking the case of tourism in Sukabumi Regency, Indonesia. Data were collected by observation and in-depth interviews by taking government and community leaders as key informants. Furthermore, informants who understand tourism development were selected through purposive and snowballing sampling techniques: related government (n=7) and the community (n=20). Data was also collected in focus group discussions to identify problems through swot analysis and formulate tourism development strategies. The study results show data that during the Covid-19 pandemic, tourism potential has increased in variety and innovation due to encouragement from the government and community efforts to independently develop their area as a tourist attraction when tourist visits are closed. The recommendation of this research is to make a grand design strategy for tourism development, developing and strengthening tourism institutions at the government and community levels, infrastructure development, and sustainable collaborative management.

Abstract

The Indonesian government's policy to encourage the involvement of private companies to contribute to renewable energy (RE) projects affects the lives of the local community in the surrounding areas. However, the local community's role in the RE project implementation must be clarified. The study identifies a possible role for the local community to participate in the RE project. It examines the barriers to its participation under the lens of public-private-people partnership. The study was conducted in a mini hydro power plant project in Indonesia. Eight representatives from the village government, community members, and company management were interviewed. The data were analyzed and presented in a descriptive-qualitative manner. The study found that local community participation is needed to manage water as a natural resource for mini hydro power plants. Still, the need for explicit agreement on responsibility and benefit-sharing between the local community, village government, and private companies becomes the barrier to community participation. The findings emphasize the need for formal partnership to specify how local government, private businesses, and communities supposedly develop renewable energy as the basis to involve stakeholders at the local level.

Abstract

Globalization has led to a capital transformation that alters culture, values, and human attitudes, making people more individualistic. Social capital acts as a social glue by fostering trust, social norms, cooperation, and a sense of community. This paper will discuss how social capital can be a driving factor for the survival of communal cattle. We conducted this research in Kulwaru Village, Special Region of Yogyakarta. This study used a qualitative approach with data collection through observation, Focus Group Discussion (FGD), in-depth interviews with key informants, and study of program-related documents. The data obtained were then analyzed using an interactive model. The results of the study show that the existence of social capital in the communal cattle in Kulwaru Village has a vital role in shaping social values in society, such as trust, norms, social relations, and cooperation which provides strong bonds in communities both in bonding, bridging, and linking. This factor has made the communal cattle survive for the last twelve years. The findings of this research will contribute to understanding and harnessing the social capital of rural communities; it is possible to support the continuation of this traditional practice and contribute to the economic and cultural well-being of the communities involved.

Abstract

The hospitality industry has gained much attention following its enormous contributions to economies. The job satisfaction of employees has been remarked to lead to higher productivity in the hospitality industry. This study explored the effects of employees' job satisfaction and their intention to quit. Through a quantitative research approach using regression models and descriptive statistics, the study analyzed 40 questionnaire responses from employees. The analyses revealed a significant negative relationship between job satisfaction and the turnover intention of employees. The results showed that the socio-demographics of respondents are relevant to their job happiness. It was revealed that employees had fair satisfaction with their jobs, although promotion and work conditions barely influenced their satisfaction. Based on these findings, the study recommended further practice and research.

Abstract

Farmers distribute curcuma through several marketing agencies to the sringanis plantation processing industry. It impacts farmers' income, so the research aims to determine the pattern of Curcuma marketing channels as a raw material for the medicinal plant processing industry, the value of efficiency indicators, and the level of efficiency of each marketing channel—methods of data collection using purposive sampling and snowball sampling. Respondents are farmers, middlemen, and managers of the sringanis plantation processing industry. The analytical approach uses quantitative analysis, namely analysis of marketing channels, marketing margins, farmer share, and marketing efficiency. The results showed that there were two patterns of Curcuma marketing channels, namely marketing Channel I, which included farmers and the sringanis plantation processing industry, and marketing Channel II which had farmers, intermediaries, wholesalers, and the sringanis processing industry. The marketing functions performed by all marketing agencies are exchange functions, physical functions, and facility functions. Farmer share obtained by marketing Channel I is more significant than Channel II, so marketing Channel I is more efficient than Channel II. The implication that farmers and the sringanis garden industry can apply is to enter into a cooperation contract where every profit and risk obtained has been adjusted by mutual agreement. Distance constraints for farmers who use marketing Channel II can be overcome by selling a portion of Curcuma produce to intermediaries with a proportion of 60%, and the remaining 30% is sold directly to the sringanis plantation processing industry.

Abstract

No one would have thought that the military clashes between Cameroon and Nigeria over the Bakassi Peninsula would one day end. For close to 50 years, Cameroon and Nigeria had been fighting over the resource-rich area of Bakassi to take control of it. The mechanisms that resolved these military upheavals were the World Court's Judgment (WCJ) of 2006 and the Green Tree Agreement (GTA) of 2006. The end of the five-year special regime program, as stipulated by the GTA, finally laid to rest the Bakassi conflict. Hitherto, following the end of hostilities between the Cameroonian and Nigerian military in the Bakassi Peninsula, the region was/is being marred by militant activities. The main thrust of this paper is to examine the role played by the Cameroonian and Nigerian military in maintaining peace in the Bakassi peninsula even after the conflict has been resolved. This research used the qualitative method with content and thematic analysis on some military activities in the Bakassi peninsula. Data was collected from secondary sources and observations from two field undertakings in Bamusso, Isangele, and Idabato subdivisions in the Bakassi region. After resolving the conflict, this paper cautions that Cameroonians and the Nigerian military have not only been engaged in security activities but have taken up new humanitarian and developmental activities. This research recommends for Cameroon and Nigerian governments divert heavy projects from the military to civilians, deploying more civilian personnel in the medical, judicial, and administrative fields in the Bakassi Peninsula. They should only limit the use of their military personnel in fighting piracy and militancy in the area. If such policies are implemented, both countries will be assured peace and tranquillity in the Bakassi Peninsula.
