Abstract

ABSTRACTThe objectives of this research was to study the fruit production and quality of strawberry grown under different irrigation system. The trial was arranged in a completely randomized design. Four irrigation systems were examined: drip irrigation applied daily, drip irrigation applied every 2 days, manual irrigation applied daily and manual irrigation applied every 2 days . The result showed that the treatments gave significant effects on vegetative growth. Plants irrigated daily produced more runn er than those irrigated every 2 days. Plants irrigated manually every 2 days lowered flower production. The drip irrigation applied daily gave the highest response on growth and yield without any difference on fruit quality. The system could be considered for hydroponic strawberry production.Key words: strawberry, irrigation, fruit production, fruit quality

Abstract

ABSTRACTHybridization program was started in PKBT IPB Bogor in 2003, entangles of 12 parental cultivars, consisting of five type Smooth Cayenne cultivars and seven type Queen cultivars. The cross yielded 195 genotypes with various different character combinations. The result of cluster analysis based on morphological characters showed that there were 33 groups of hybrid at the degree of genetic similarity of 50%. The result of principal component analysis indicated that, between yield component characters and result most importantly, were fruit weight, fruit diameter and fruit length which were main supporting character of variance in hybrid result of the crosses. Descriptive results of fruit yield and quality characters showed three to five classes with the highest number of individuals around the mean value for each character. Fruit weight, crown weight, fruit length, fruit diameter, flesh thickness, core diameter, total soluble solid (TSS), total acid, vitamin C, pH, plant height, and peduncle length, were characters controlled by nuclear genes.Key words : hybridization, variability, Smooth Cayenne, Queen, genotype

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe objective of the experiment was to investigate the physical and chemical characteristic of eight genotypes of papaya i.e. IPB1, IPB 2A, IPB 3, IPB 3A, IPB 4, IPB 7, IPB 8, and IPB 9 on two stages of ripening period based on percentage of the yellow area of fruit peel (75% yellow and 100% yellow). The fruits were picked at 25% yellow of fruit peel colour. The experiment was conducted in split plot wi th completely randomized block design. The main plot was ripening periods of 75% and 100% ripe, while the genotypes were taken at subplot. There was no significant different on physical and chemical characteristics between papaya at stadium 75% and 100% yellow. Flesh firmness of IPB 9 was better than IPB 1, IPB 4 and IPB 8. Ascorbic acid content of IPB 4 (107.36 mg/100 g) was higher than that of IPB 2A and IPB 3A. Carotenoid content of IPB 4 (29. 73 mg/100g) was higher than that of the other genotypes.Key words: Carica papaya, physical characteristic, chemical characteristic, ascorbic acid, carotenoid

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis experiment was conducted to study the effect of calcium applicatian on gamboge in mangosteen fruit. Calcium materials used in this research was dolomite. This research was conducted from November 2007 to April 2008 at mangosteen orchard, Karacak, Leuwiliang, Bogor. The treatment design was Randomized Completely Block Design with three replications. The experiment consist of one factor, i.e. dosages of calcium (0, 2.5, 3.0 and 3.5 ton Ca2+/ ha). The result showed that dolomite application with dosage of 3.5 ton Ca2+/ha reduced gamboge in mangosteen rind significantly than control (0 ton Ca2+ha- 1) but no significant effect on gamboge in mangosteen aryl.Key words: dolomite, dosages, rind, and aryl

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe objective of this research was to determine the effect of coating materials and BAP concentration on inhibition of ripening process of mangosteen. The experiment used factorial completely randomized design with two factors, and three replication s. Coating materials as the first factor consisted of control (without coating) , bee wax 6%, and chitosan 2%. The second factor was concentration of Benzil Amino Purine (BAP), with 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 ppm. Non destructive observations were weight loss, diameter decrease, peel and calyx color development. While, destructive observations were fruit hardness, total soluble solid (TSS), total titratable acidity (TTA) and opened ability. The result showed that bee wax was effective to inhibit weight loss. Interaction of bee wax and BAP 20 ppm inhibited peel and calyx color changes during storage.Key word: coating material, cytokinin, benzil amino purine, calyx, storage

Abstract

ABSTRACTMolecular and biochemical characteristics of Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. cubense (Foc) were detected. Six of Indonesian Foc isolates were artificially inoculated on “Ambon Kuning” banana. DNA of one-week culture isolates was extracted by three methods prior to PCR assay using Foc TR4 (tropical race 4) specific primer. Activity of extracellular enzyme was determined with reduction sugar, agar diffusion and SDS-PAGE assays. Statistical analysis revealed that all isolates insignificantly caused Fusarium wilt symptoms on tested banana with disease severity index ranging from 3 to 3.6. Maximum DNA concentration was obtained by CTAB method (766.25 µg mL-1), followed by SDS and alkaline l ysis methods, i.e. 553.75 and 211.25 µg mL-1, respectively. PCR analysis showed that Bnt2 and Kjg1 isolates positively reacted to TR4 of Foc primer (DNA size of 1400 bp approximately). Reduction sugar and agar diffusion assays demonstrated that Kjg1 isolate significantly produced more extracellular enzyme, with 6.53 × 10-2mg mL-1 in conce ntration and 20 mm in halo diameter. Meanwhile, SDS-PAGE assay viewed diverse bands of tested fungi (20.6 to 80 kDa), representing four extracellular enzymes. Positive PCR results highlighted the presence of Foc TR4 infecting banana in Indonesia. Various activities of extracellular enzymes did not influence the pathogenicity of Foc.Key words: pathogenicity, DNA concentration, extracellular enzyme

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe objectives of this research was to study the effect of shade on growth and productivity of several indigenous vegetables. The research was conducted at Vegetable Garden, University Farm IPB, Darmaga from February until June 2009. This research was arranged in a Randomized Completely Block Design, 1 factor with 2 treatments, shading (N1) and no shading (N0). Result of the research showed that shading increased plant height, length of branch, leaf length and width of Daun Ginseng (Talinum triangulare); leaf diameter, leaf length and width, petiole length of Sambung Nyawa (Gynura procumbens); leaf length and width of Katuk ( Sauropus androgynus); leaf number of Kenikir (Cosmos caudatus), stem diameter of Kemangi (Ocimum americanum); plant height, length of branch, number of branch, leaf length and width of Pohpohan (Pilea trinervia). Shading also increased total fresh and dry weight/plant of Daun Ginseng; and total fresh/plant of Sambung Nyawa and Pohpohan plants. Productivity of Daun Ginseng and Pohpohan at shade field was better than at open field. Daun Ginseng, Sambung Nyawa, Kenikir, Kemangi and Pohpohan plants prefered growing at low light intensity (shade plants).Key words: indigenous vegetable, shading, growth, productivity
