Abstract

This study is a quasi-experimental study using a post-test-only design. The purpose of the study is to determine if there is a significant effect of digital storytelling on the listening comprehension of eleventh-grade students. The population of this research was eight classeso f eleventh-grade students at SMAN 1 Kencong in the 2023/2024 academic year. Data was collected through a listening test. The data was statistically analyzed using a t-test with SPSS. Based on the results, the mean score of the experimental group (80.00) was higher than the control group (63.00). The significant (2-tailed) showed a value of 0.000 which was lower than 0.05. The results prove that there is a significant effect of using Digital Storytelling on students' listening comprehension on eleventh-grade students at SMAN 1 Kencong in the 2023/2024 academic year. Therefore, it is suggested to English teachers, students, and future researchers to use the results of this research as a reference.

Abstract

The use of emotional labour in teachers is of course very much needed both outside the classroom and in the classroom. Emotions can be divided into positive and negative emotions. However, not many studies have conducted the range of these emotions in emotional labour and various kinds of regulation. This study used narrative inquiry that aimed to identify English teachers’ emotional labour while teaching speaking in EFL class. The research data were collected through interview and then analyzed by using thematic analysis. The research found that the English teachers at one of the senior high school in Mojokerto felt both negative and positive emotions when teaching speaking. However, with the negative emotions that arise, this was easily overcome by regulating it. The regulating carried out by the teachers are social interaction and the use mindset. With those regulations, teachers easily changed their negative emotions into positive emotions. The same went for positive emotions. In this study, some positive emotions need to be regulated and some do not.

Abstract

Peace value is a key to instill learners with good characters. Peace education can readily be integrated into values education as a part of subject through textbook since textbook is mostly used material and every aspect of the textbook has the potential to promote the values. Aiming to explore explicit and implicit messages about peace values in English Textbook for Tenth-Grade Senior High School Students, this study reviews the images of the textbook by revealing the embedded peace values. Critical discourse analysis was conducted to characterize, understand and explain the nature of the textbook’s discourse. The list of peace indicators from Balasooriya (2001) was used to identify kinds of peace values represented in the textbook. The result shows that the contents of peace values, for particularly peace with nature, was seriously under represented while the most represented one is social peace. Consequently, the imbalanced representation of peace values may lead to failure of raising the optimal implementation of the three categories of peace values

Abstract

Research has presented different results on students’ reading habits concerning their socioeconomic status. The present study focuses on reading habits regarding the socioeconomic status of Indonesian EFL students to examine whether socioeconomic status represents students’ reading habits. An online survey was conducted to observe the EFL students, followed by descriptive analysis to examine the data. This study categorizes students’ socioeconomic status and reading habits level into three categories, namely high, middle, and low, to enable the researcher to determine whether there is a correlation between the two aspects. Based on the data gathered from the survey, it is found that students’ reading habits are not always inferred by their socioeconomic status. Among 230 participants, 27% were from high socioeconomic status families, 59% of the students were from middle socioeconomic status, and the remaining 14% were from low socioeconomic status. Besides categorizing students’ socioeconomic status, this research found that even students with the same socioeconomic status have various reading habits. Further research on reading habits among siblings is suggested to gain more detailed information on whether socioeconomic status represents students’ reading habits.

Abstract

This current quasi experimental research tried to investigate the main effect of PANORAMA reading strategy which consists of Previewing, Annotating, Noting Vocabulary, Organizing, Reading aloud, Assessing, Monitoring, Answering, compared to the combined translation and reading aloud (TRA) toward students’ reading comprehension. After the process of treatment, the results of the two groups were compared and analyzed statistically. It was revealed that the difference between the control and the experimental groups was not significant. Despite the insignificant difference, PANORAMA is potential to be considered as an alternative of reading strategy to help students to comprehend English reading passage.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find out how the value of peace was represented and also what was the most dominant value of peace in the Junior High School English textbook entitled "Think Globally Act Locally". The researcher used Balasooriya's (2001) theory regarding the values of peace which were mentioned as inner peace, social peace, and peace with nature. Furthermore, this research used Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) as a research design that focused on the visual semiotics of peace values. The research was conducted using Barthes' (1977) visual semiotics theory which used two layers of meaning, namely denotative and connotative, in analyzing visual objects. The findings showed that there were 13 images representing 3 groups of peace values, 2 of which contained 2 different peace values. Among them, the first 5 images were inner peace, the second 8 images were social peace and then followed by 2 images of peace in nature. This showed that the value of social peace was more dominant compared to other peace values.
