Teaching English as a Foreign Language Overseas Journal (TEFLO) is a Journal of English Education Study Program of Universitas Kristen Indonesia Toraja (p-ISSN:2461-0240) is a scientific journal published third a year in April, August and December. It was established on 25th September 2016 for printing. TEFLO publishes articles as the results of research and scientific work either empirical or conceptual. This journal focuses on both research and conceptual articles done by any English teacher or lecturer within Indonesia or overseas countries. It allows any writer to submit up to 8-12 pages or equivalent with 2500 to 4000 words in range. It applies APA style in all articles submitted to this journal. While the scopes include English Language Teaching (ELT) in EFL or ESL context, English applied linguistics (EAL) in any form: empirical or conceptual. TEFLO focuses on and welcomes researchers in both EFL and ESL contexts to publish professional or conceptual articles, and research articles formed in a qualitative and quantitative study in the area of the following scopes: Analysis of English pieces of literature in the English Education Context Discourse Analysis in the English Education context ELT Material Development English Applied linguistics English for Specific Purposes English Language Testing and Evaluation Psycholinguistics, Sociolinguistics, and Anthropolinguistic Tourism and Local Wisdom issues

Abstract

Background of this research is students’ motivation still low in learning English, it is caused by method which is not interested in teaching and learning process. The aim of this research is to know the effect of Teaching Method through Group Work to Improve Vocabulary of the Students SMP Wahyu Makassar. This research used classroom action research (CAR) method. The populations are class VII of SMP Wahyu Makassar that consist of 5 classes. Every class consist of 20 students, meanwhile the population are 170 students. The sample of this research are 20 students of class VII-D (only one class). The instrument that uses in this research is test (multiple choices). The data analysis result show that there is significant difference of the student’s vocabulary mastery after taught using group work method. It shows at significant statistic level data analysis result. Based on the analysis result, the writer concluded that the use of group work method can improve students’ vocabulary mastery and students have very high motivation in learning English by using group work method.

Abstract

This research aimed to detect whether REDW strategy has effect to the students’ reading comprehension at the third grade of SMPN 2 Campalagian. The method which used in this research was pre-experiment with one class pre-test and post-test design at the third grade of SMPN 2 Campalagian. The sample were 29 students from the total population 174 students. The result of the research and discussion that obtained by the writer at SMPN 2 Campalagian that there was effect of using REDW strategy on students’ reading comprehension after comparing the result of pre-test and post-test by getting improvement 63%. The writer was able to apply Read, Examine, Decide, write strategy to make the teaching process effective and it also helped students improve their reading comprehension.

Abstract

This study aims to know the effect of applying contextual teaching and learning in mastering the present continuous tense students. The study employed pre-experimental design. The population consists of 270 students and the sample were 23 students taken from the SMP Negeri 35 Makassar of grade eight. The data was collected by administering multiple choice test with consisting of 20 number. The T-Value of post-test is lower than ? (0,00<0,05) The result indicates that the alternative hypothesis(H1) is accepted and of course the null hypothesis (H?) is rejected, it shows that applying contextual teaching and learning has effect on students’ present continuous tense mastery

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to know the effect of Native Speaker on students' listening. The results of this study are expected to be useful for students to enrich the listening ability, and can help teachers to be more creative. The research method applied is pre-experimental method by using a pre-test, treatment, and post-test. The subject of this research is XI/IPS 1 and XI/IPS 2 at SMAN 3 Wangi-wangi. This research applied total sampling technique, with a total sample of 20 students. The result of data analysis shown that there was a significant effect of students’ listening by using audiovisual native speaker as a media in the learning process. It can be seen from the value of the t-test is 4.01 higher than t-table is 2.027. Obtaining the student scores indicate that usage of audiovisual Native Speaker can effect on students' listening mastery in VIII/IPS 1 and XI/IPS 2 SMAN 3 Wangi-wangi.

Abstract

The research is aimed to know the students’ ability in using Independent and Dependent Clauses in Complex Sentences in class VI-A dan VI-B at Bosowa University. The result of this research is expected to give benefits for the readers especially in using Independent and Dependent Clauses in Complex Sentences. This research used descriptive qualitative research. The population of this research is sixth semester students of Bosowa University that have 65 students and the sampling of this research is quota sampling so, in this research the writer takes some of the students in the class which is consist of 30 students from two classes and each class was took 15 students. The result of this research and explanation that the writer got in Bosowa University is 6.6% students got very good category and 20% students got good category while 50% students got enough category and then 23.3 students got poor category. While the mean score of the students is 71.2. It indicates that students sixth semester enough ability in using Independent and dependent clauses in complex sentences.
