Jurnal Bastra (Bahasa dan Sastra)
JOURNAL BASTRA (Language and Literature) is a publicly accessible journal published by the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Halu Oleo University. This journal is published four times a year, every January, April, July, and October. This journal contains the results of research (field or literature studies), theoretical studies, and critical studies covering several areas of study as follows. Indonesian language education includes studies on linguistic learning, phonology learning, morphology learning, syntax learning, semantic learning, pragmatics learning, discourse learning, sociolinguistic learning, and psycholinguistic learning. Indonesian literature education includes studies on poetry learning, fiction prose learning, and drama and film learning. Indonesian, includes studies on linguistics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, discourse, sociolinguistics, and psycholinguistics. Indonesian literature includes studies on poetry, prose fiction, drama, and film with a structural approach, stylistics, semiotics, sociology of literature, psychology of literature, psychoanalysis, literary ecology, deconstruction, philology, phenomenology, feminism, literary reception, and literary anthropology.

<![CDATA[This study aims to describe the ability of seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Bungku Selatan in writing procedure texts. Using a quantitative descriptive method with a field research approach, this study involved 75 students as the total sample. The data were collected through a written test in which students were assigned to compose a procedure text based on the given theme. The assessment focused on four aspects: title, structural completeness, linguistic features, and writing conventions. The findings show that 60% of the students (45 learners) achieved the minimum mastery criterion of 66%, while 40% (30 learners) did not meet the standard. The classical mastery level also did not reach the expected threshold of 85%. The analysis of each aspect reveals that the title aspect achieved the highest mastery (100%), whereas the structural completeness (56%), linguistic features (72%), and writing conventions (62.67%) remain below the expected level. Overall, the results indicate that students’ ability to write procedure texts is still insufficient, particularly in applying structure, linguistic features, and proper writing mechanics. These findings suggest the need for improved instructional strategies and more intensive writing practice to enhance students’ proficiency in writing procedure texts.]]>

<![CDATA[This research is entitled Character Conflict in the Novel Malewa The Man Who Walks on Water by Andhika Mappasomba. The problem of this research is how the character conflict occurs in the novel Malewa Lelaki yang Berjalan di Atas Air by Andhika Mappasomba. This research aims to describe the conflict between the characters in the novel Malewa Lelaki yang Berjalan di Atas Air by Andhika Mappasomba. This type of research is library research, using qualitative descriptive methods. The data in this research is written data in the form of character conflicts in the novel Malewa Lelaki Berjalan di Atas Air by Andhika Mappasomba. The data source in this research is the novel entitled Malewa Lelaki yang Berjalan di Atas Air by Andhika Mappasomba, published by Rumah Bunyi, Kendari, 2019 with a thickness of 143 pages. Data collection techniques in this research are analytical reading, intensive reading and note taking. The data analysis technique used in this research is using a structural approach. The results of this research show that the conflicts contained in the novel Malewa Lelaki Yang Berjalan di Atas Air by Andhika Mappasomba are internal conflict and external conflict. Internal conflict in the novel Malewa Lelaki yang Berjalan di Atas Air by Andhika Mappasomba consists of physical conflict that occurs in the characters Malewa, Cousin Atikah, and Girl Wasior, social conflict that occurs in each character, natural conflict that occurs in the character Malewa, Lelaki Tua, Captain and Crew, and Vice President. The main factor causing conflict in the novel Malewa Lelaki yang Berjalan di Atas Air by Andhika Mappasomba is the conflict between love and parental approval.]]>

<![CDATA[This study aims to describe the social reality in the novel Merindu Cahaya de Amstel by Arumi Ekowati. This study is a type of library research. The data collection techniques used are reading techniques and note-taking techniques. The data in this study were analyzed using a sociology of literature approach. Based on the results of the study in the novel Merindu Cahaya de Amstel by Arumi Ekowati and the conclusion there is a social reality about family disorganization, the existence of family relationship breakdowns and its impact on individuals in building identity and facing social life, social reality about culture oriented towards diaspora and cultural identity, multicultural interaction, cultural heritage and cultural preservation, social reality about religion oriented towards spiritual journey, challenges in practicing Islamic teachings, and how a convert struggles to maintain his faith, social reality about education oriented towards access, support, and academic dynamics in the education system, social reality about the economy oriented towards survival strategies and individual financial independence in facing economic challenges, social reality about the problems of the younger generation in modern society oriented towards independence, challenges in finding work, economic struggles, to the search for the meaning of life, and social reality about violations of community norms on awareness of human rights, protection of women, and individual struggles to uphold justice in the face of acts of violence or coercion.]]>

<![CDATA[The purpose of this study is to describe the forms of politeness maxims in the social interactions of eleventh-grade students at Pondok Tahfidz Pesantren Ummul Qurra’ Kendari. This research is a field study, and the method used is a descriptive method aimed at providing a detailed and in-depth description of the research findings. The data used in this study consists of students' utterances during social interactions in the environment of Pondok Tahfidz Pesantren Ummul Qurra’ Kendari, specifically in speech situations. Data collection methods include observation and conversation techniques, while data collection techniques consist of recording and note-taking. The data analysis technique employed is a sociopragmatic approach, involving stages such as data transcription, data classification, data interpretation, and data analysis. The research findings indicate that the language politeness at Pondok Tahfidz Pesantren Ummul Qurra' Kendari applies six politeness maxims: (1) the tact maxim, (2) the generosity maxim, (3) the approbation maxim, (4) the modesty maxim, (5) the agreement maxim, and (6) the sympathy maxim. These maxims are evident in the students' interactions and reflect the application of politeness principles in the pesantren environment.]]>

<![CDATA[This study aims to describe the types of figurative language found in the novel Dia yang Haram by Isrina Sumia. The focus of this research is on comparative and associative figurative language used by the author to enhance the expressive and aesthetic qualities of the narrative. The method used is descriptive qualitative with a stylistic approach. Data were collected through reading, note-taking, and analyzing excerpts in the novel that contain stylistic elements. The results show that the dominant types of comparative figurative language include simile, metaphor, personification, allegory, antithesis, pleonasm, periphrasis, and epanorthosis. Meanwhile, the associative figurative language consists of metonymy, synecdoche, allusion, euphemism, eponym, epithet, and antonomasia. These figurative expressions serve to emphasize character emotions, clarify situations, and enrich the artistic value of the novel. This study contributes to literature teaching and the understanding of stylistics in fictional works.]]>

<![CDATA[The purpose of this study is to discuss the analysis of basic words in the novel Lebé Kabayan by Ahmad Bakri, this study focuses on examining the form, meaning and function of basic words. In this study using descriptive qualitative methods. Data acquisition through library study techniques or literature reviews, namely by examining, exploring, recording and identifying reading materials to be studied. To obtain the results of the data in this study is by calculating the frequency and percentage of the data. The results of this study show that there are five forms of basic words, including; 1) one-syllable basic words (220 / 7.6%); 2) two-syllable basic words (2261 / 78.4%); 3) three-syllable basic words (347 / 12%); 4) four-syllable basic words (53 / 1.9%); 5) five-syllable basic words (2 / 0.1%), with a total of 2883 data and a percentage of 100%. The results of the analysis of the meaning of basic words with five parts, including; 1) the meaning of one syllable basic words (220/ 7.6%); 2) the meaning of two syllable basic words (2261/ 78.4%); 3) the meaning of three syllable basic words (347/ 12%); 4) the meaning of four syllable basic words (53/ 1.9%); 5) the meaning of five syllable basic words (2/ 0.1%). The results of the basic word functions found five parts, including; 1) the word item (1365/ 47.3%); 2) the verb (391/ 13.6%); 3) the word sipat (169/ 6%); 4) the word number (34/ 1.1%); 5) the word task (924/ 32%).]]>

<![CDATA[This research aims to describe the character traits in the novel Lentera Senja by Alfia Ramadhani. This study is categorized as library research using a descriptive qualitative method. The primary data source is the novel Lentera Senja, second edition, published in 2023 by Loveable Publisher in Jakarta, with a total of 280 pages. The research focuses on analyzing the characters’ traits through reading and note-taking techniques. The data were analyzed using an objective approach, describing the findings systematically and accurately based on the textual evidence. The term "descriptive" refers to the process of portraying the data as it is, while "qualitative" indicates the interpretation of interrelated conceptual understandings, delivered verbally and supported by relevant theories. The study highlights several key characters and their traits: Zayyan (responsibility, care, trustworthiness, respect, citizenship awareness, and fairness), Athar (care, fairness, responsibility, and trustworthiness), Khanza (care), Syafiya (care, responsibility, and respect), Zana (care), Haura (responsibility and fairness), Farzan (care), and Rizal (responsibility, care, and trustworthiness).]]>

<![CDATA[This study aims to describe the narrative structure of Jaquenza Eden’s novel Narasi Perihal Ayah by applying Tzvetan Todorov’s narrative theory. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method with a narrative analysis approach. The data consist of textual quotations representing the stages of the storyline: equilibrium, disruption, recognition, repair, and equilibrium again. The findings reveal that the novel portrays the emotional journey of a young boy named Ekal in coping with the loss of both his parents. The equilibrium stage is depicted through Ekal’s harmonious life with his mother, disruption occurs when he experiences loss and social pressure, recognition emerges as he realizes the painful reality, repair takes place through writing and self-reflection, and equilibrium again is achieved when Ekal finally accepts his situation and finds a new balance in life. Therefore, the novel not only presents a story of loss but also highlights a touching and profound process of emotional healing.]]>

<![CDATA[The purpose of this study is to describe the moral values in the novel House for Alie by Lenn Liu. The type of research is library research. The method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive method. The data in this study is written data, namely excerpts from stories related to moral values in the novel House for Alie by Leen Liu. The source of data in this study is a novel entitled House for Alie by Leen Liu which was published by the media crater in 2024 with a thickness of 262 pages. The data collection technique used in this study is the reading and recording technique. The data analysis technique used in this study is qualitative descriptive. The results of the study show that there are moral values, namely the moral value of human relations with themselves, the moral value of human relations with fellow humans, and the moral value of human relations with God. The moral value of human relationships with oneself is self-esteem, self-confidence, fear, longing, loneliness, responsibility to oneself, obligation to oneself, and manners. Furthermore, the moral value of human relationships with fellow humans is to think positively, help others, help selflessly and respect each other. Then, the moral value of human relations with God is surrender and obedience to God, praying or begging God, and acknowledging God's greatness.]]>
