Abstract

The advancement of information technology has brought significant impacts on community life, including in Setono Village. The purpose of this study is to understand how technology influences social interactions within the community, to identify its positive and negative effects, and to examine how people adapt to these social changes. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed through interviews and direct observations. The findings reveal that information technology not only facilitates access to information and communication but also transforms social traditions such as gotong royong (mutual cooperation), which has gradually declined. This phenomenon is analyzed using symbolic interactionism and social conflict theories. Technological change within society presents challenges such as social inequality and the diminishing sense of solidarity; however, it also offers opportunities for building social networks and enhancing community participation through digital media. This study highlights the importance of information technology in addressing its own impacts, including fostering wise and ethical technology use, preventing misuse, and maintaining a balance between modernity and tradition. Therefore, technology can serve as an instrument of empowerment without undermining fundamental social values.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the social construction that shapes the meaning of selamatan in the lives of the people of Karetan Village, Banyuwangi, a tradition that combines religious and social aspects. Selamatan in this village is not only considered a religious ritual, but also a social process that creates and strengthens bonds between individuals in the community. The meaning of selamatan in Karetan Village is influenced by social dynamics, economic changes, and interactions between generations. This research uses a qualitative approach, the theoretical perspective used is social construction theory developed by Peter Ludwig Berger. In-depth interviews and collective observation are used to understand how people interpret and live selamatan in their daily lives. The main focus of the research is how selamatan functions as a mechanism for social identity formation and social network strengthening in the midst of rapid change. The findings of this study show that despite efforts to maintain traditions, selamatan undergoes changes in meaning along with the influence of modernization, where social and pragmatic aspects increasingly dominate. This research provides insight into the cultural dynamics in villages that are often overlooked in social studies, as well as how cultural practices remain relevant despite the pressures of modernization.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the emergence of consumptive behavior among rice farmers in Nagari Supayang. Despite residing in a rural area, these farmers exhibit consumption patterns that are disproportionate to their actual income levels. The main objective of this study is to identify the forms of consumptive behavior among rice farmers in Nagari Supayang and to analyze the factors that drive such behavior. This study employs a qualitative research design with a descriptive approach. Data collection techniques include observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was carried out through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The validity of the data was ensured through prolonged observation, increased rigor, and triangulation of sources, techniques, and time. The results reveal several forms of consumptive behavior among rice farmers in Nagari Supayang, Payung Sekaki District, Solok Regency. These include the purchase of goods beyond primary needs, excessive use of fertilizers and pesticides, substantial expenditures for wedding ceremonies, and the acquisition of luxury items. The factors contributing to this consumptive behavior include temporary increases in income, social environmental influences, easy access to credit or loans, the impact of media and advertising, as well as environmental or natural factors

Abstract

The phenomenon of school-aged children engaging as street vendors reflects social inequality and economic pressures that compel them to work at an early age. This study aims to explore the factors that drive children’s involvement in economic activities and to examine the impacts on their social lives, education, and psychological well-being. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through literature review, interviews, observations, and documentation, focusing on child street vendors in Palangka Raya City. The findings indicate that poverty, low parental education, limited awareness of children’s rights, and weak supervision by social institutions are the main driving factors. These children face significant challenges in balancing their dual roles as students and breadwinners, leading to the neglect of their fundamental rights such as access to education, healthcare, and leisure. The study underscores the urgent need for cross-sectoral attention and intervention to prevent exploitation and to ensure the comprehensive protection and fulfillment of children’s rights.

Abstract

This study aims to understand the dynamics of dual identity as expressed through the management of two distinct Instagram accounts representing different personalities within a single individual. This phenomenon illustrates how individuals utilize digital spaces to separate the personal and social aspects of the self in response to social expectations and the pursuit of authenticity. The research employs a qualitative approach using a phenomenological method to explore the subjective experiences of four informants who manage two accounts embodying contrasting personas. The findings reveal that the formation of dual digital identities is closely linked to two concepts from Max Weber’s theory of social action—value-rational action and instrumental-rational action. Individuals tend to use one account as a socially conforming representation of the self, while the other serves as a space for expressing personal values. These results confirm that digital spaces function not only as arenas of communication but also as new social fields that enable reflective identity negotiation. The study concludes that the creation of a digital alter ego constitutes a socio-cultural strategy for balancing external social demands with personal self-expression in the context of modern digital society.
