Abstract

As they age, the elderly experience various declines in body system function which can increase the risk of developing various diseases. One of the health conditions most commonly suffered by the elderly is hypertension, which is one of the main causes of death in this age group. If not controlled properly, hypertension can cause serious complications which can be fatal for the sufferer. Therefore, the role of caregivers or family members is very important in helping elderly people manage hypertension effectively. The aim of this service is to improve the quality of life of elderly people suffering from hypertension. An intervention based on caregiver empowerment was carried out in the work area of ??the Deli Tua Community Health Center.  This program method begins with an initial measurement of the quality of life of the elderly before intervention is carried out. Furthermore, caregivers are given education and training regarding the management of hypertension in the elderly which is monitored via the WhatsApp group. This monitoring lasted for one month, after which the quality of life of hypertensive elderly was measured again to assess the effectiveness of the intervention. The results show a significant increase in the quality of life of the elderly after caregiver empowerment. Before the intervention, the majority of elderly people, namely 54%, had a poor quality of life. However, after the program was running and interventions were implemented, this figure changed drastically, with 88% of elderly people showing an improvement in their quality of life. These results confirm that community service programs that focus on empowering caregivers in managing hypertension have a positive impact in improving the quality of life of elderly people suffering from this disease.

Abstract

Wasting in children under five remains a significant public health problem, especially in developing countries like Indonesia, where nutritional issues such as wasting, stunting, and underweight are still prevalent. This study aimed to develop and implement a community-based innovation program named Tangan Baliku (Integrated Management of Underweight Children) to address the high incidence of wasting in the working area of Purbaratu Primary Health Center. This innovation was designed and implemented in April 2022 through cross-sectoral collaboration, focusing on promotive, preventive, curative, and educational approaches. The methodology used was a descriptive participatory approach involving community empowerment through optimizing the existing mother–toddler class, home visits, nutrition counseling, supplementary feeding, and regular monitoring. The results show that Tangan Baliku effectively increases early detection and management of underweight children, improves mothers' knowledge of nutrition, and encourages higher participation in toddler health services. It also helps in reducing the number of children with poor nutritional status through structured follow-up and referral systems. In conclusion, the Tangan Baliku program is a comprehensive and sustainable strategy that addresses wasting by strengthening maternal involvement, community participation, and cross-sector collaboration in child nutrition improvement. This program contributes to better health outcomes for children under five and supports the development of a healthy and high-quality future generation.

Abstract

Transgender women are one of the key populations highly vulnerable to HIV/AIDS transmission due to risky sexual behaviors, limited access to friendly health services, and high levels of social stigma. To address this issue, a community service initiative was carried out at the Lubuk Pakam Public Health Center (Puskesmas), Deli Serdang Regency, aimed at increasing knowledge and preventive efforts related to HIV/AIDS among transgender women through educational approaches and integrated services. The methods included needs assessment through observation and interviews, development of locally relevant educational materials, interactive counseling sessions, voluntary HIV testing (VCT), and training for healthcare providers. A total of 25 transgender participants joined the education session, and 15 underwent VCT accompanied by pre- and post-test counseling. The results showed an average increase in knowledge of 35.4% based on pre-test and post-test scores. Additionally, an inclusive HIV service corner was established, and anti-stigma communication training was conducted for healthcare workers. This approach proved effective in enhancing community engagement and improving awareness of HIV prevention among transgender individuals. Success factors included the use of visual media, community-based education, local language delivery, and strong institutional support from the health center. These findings highlight the importance of replicating similar programs in other regions, involving community peer educators as key partners. Sustained, locally tailored education is essential for effective HIV/AIDS control among marginalized populations such as transgender women.

Abstract

Counseling on early detection of cervical cancer is an important effort to increase public awareness and knowledge, especially Women of Childbearing Age (WUS), regarding the dangers and prevention of cervical cancer. Cervical cancer is a serious health problem that is the second leading cause of death among women with cancer. Cervical cancer is dangerous because it can cause death if not detected early. This disease damages reproductive organs, reduces quality of life, and causes pain and abnormal bleeding. In addition, treatment is expensive and carries the risk of infertility as well as psychological and social impacts for sufferers. This counseling activity was held in Perbarakan Village, Dusun 1 on Friday, May 2, 2025, at 16.00 WIB and was attended by 35 participants. The material presented in the activity included the definition of cervical cancer, risk factors, signs and symptoms, the importance of early detection, prevention methods, maintaining reproductive organ hygiene, healthy sexual relations, and the importance of HPV vaccination. Before the counseling, the level of knowledge of participants regarding cervical cancer and early detection efforts was relatively low (below 50%). However, after the activity took place, there was a significant increase in knowledge (more than 80%). The success of the activity was seen from the high enthusiasm of the participants during the discussion and question and answer sessions, which created an interactive and effective learning atmosphere. With cooperation between the community, families, and health workers, it is hoped that similar activities can continue to be carried out to reduce the incidence and mortality due to cervical cancer and create a healthy and quality generation of women.

Abstract

Repeatedly sniffing glue can cause serious negative impacts, both physically, psychologically, and socially. Medically, chemicals in glue such as toluene or other solvents can damage the central nervous system, cause respiratory disorders, liver and kidney damage, and reduce cognitive function. In the long term, this habit can have an impact on decreased learning ability, emotional disorders, and even a tendency towards criminal acts. Education and socialization about the negative impacts of sniffing glue need to be carried out continuously as a preventive measure. Therefore, the author conducted educational activities in the form of counseling about the negative impacts of frequent glue sniffing behavior on children and adolescents at LKP Universal Technology Computer. This activity is a community service activity that aims to provide children with an understanding of the dangers of using glue as a substance that is abused, as well as to encourage the formation of a healthy and safe environment for children's growth and development. Counseling activities are carried out using the lecture method as the main approach in delivering the material. The percentage value of the questionnaire acquisition of the counseling participants before being given the material exposure is still in the low to moderate range where the most in the low value group with the percentage value of the questionnaire acquisition achieved from the low value group is 85% (17 participants), the moderate value group is 15% (3 participants), while the high value group is 0%. (0 participants). Furthermore, the percentage value of the questionnaire acquisition of the counseling participants after being given the material exposure obtained an increase in knowledge, namely in the moderate to high range, where the most in the high value group, with the low value group being 0% (0 participants), in the moderate value group being 45% (9 participants), then in the high value group being 55% (11 participants). This shows that the counseling activities carried out are able to increase the knowledge of counseling participants about the negative impacts of the behavior of often sniffing glue. Furthermore, it is hoped that with the delivery of this material, counseling participants can avoid and not engage in deviant behavior such as often sniffing glue (ngelem).
