Abstract

Pulmonary Tuberculosis is a contagious infectious disease caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis and attacks the lungs. Pulmonary TB is spread through phlegm droplets that come out when the sufferer coughs, sneezes, or talks. This disease is characterized by the main symptoms of a cough with phlegm that lasts for more than two weeks, sometimes accompanied by blood, fever, night sweats, weight loss, and weakness. Pulmonary TB is a serious public health problem because of its high transmission rate and can cause serious complications if not treated properly. Prevention and control of Pulmonary TB can be done through early detection, regular and complete treatment, and the implementation of clean and healthy living behaviors. Educational activities on healthy living behavior for the prevention of Pulmonary Tuberculosis were carried out at the Sialang Health Center, involving families and Pulmonary TB sufferers. The implementation of the activity used lecture methods, discussions, and the provision of educational media on the prevention of Pulmonary Tuberculosis. From the results of the activity, there was an increase in public knowledge about the prevention of Pulmonary Tuberculosis, namely from 55% before education to 85% after education. This increase was also accompanied by improvements in the attitudes and behavior of participants, such as being more active in using masks when coughing, maintaining home ventilation, maintaining personal hygiene, and seeking health services earlier if symptoms suspected of Pulmonary Tuberculosis appear. Participants also showed a better understanding of symptoms, transmission methods, and the importance of maintaining healthy living behavior in the family and community environment. This proves that education that is carried out in a structured and interactive manner can be an effective means of increasing public awareness and knowledge. Thus, education is an important and inexpensive approach that can improve the quality of life and create a healthy, independent, and prosperous society.

Abstract

Cervical cancer is one of the leading causes of death among women in developing countries, primarily due to delays in early detection. According to data from the World Health Organization, there are more than 342,000 cervical cancer-related deaths each year, with 90% of these cases occurring in low- and middle-income countries. In Indonesia, cervical cancer ranks as the second most common cancer after breast cancer, with over 36,000 new cases annually and a death toll reaching 18,000. Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (IVA) is a simple and affordable screening method that can be performed at primary healthcare facilities. This community service activity aims to increase the knowledge, attitudes, and readiness of couples of reproductive age (CoRA) in conducting early detection of cervical cancer through family-based education. The activity was carried out using lectures supported by media such as leaflets and videos. A total of 30 CoRA participants from the Sukorame health center area took part in the program. The education was delivered through lectures, interactive discussions, and educational video screenings. The education on VIA screening for couples of reproductive age proved effective in improving their understanding, attitudes, and readiness to carry out early detection of cervical cancer. Prior to the education, most participants lacked awareness about the importance of VIA screening. However, after the session, there was a significant increase in knowledge (86.67%), willingness to undergo screening (66.67%), and shared awareness between partners (60%) about the importance of early detection. This interactive and contextual educational approach was effective in building awareness and encouraging preventive action at both family and community levels.

Abstract

Currently, nutritional problems remain a significant public health concern in Indonesia. Economic conditions and increased food consumption levels among the population have contributed to the rising prevalence of obesity. Obesity is a nutritional disorder characterized by excessive fat accumulation in the body. This condition leads to abnormal fat distribution, resulting in decreased muscle mass, quality, and strength. The development of obesity is influenced by poor lifestyle habits, genetic predisposition, and hormonal imbalances. This community service program (PkM) aimed to educate the public on strategies to reduce the risk of obesity by promoting the adoption of healthy lifestyles. The intervention specifically targeted women of reproductive age (WRA), encouraging them to improve their lifestyle practices to prevent obesity-related complications. The program was delivered through lectures, active discussions, and practical field sessions, with a total of 30 participants.During the activity, the PkM team provided health education materials, facilitated interactive question-and-answer sessions, and conducted hands-on training. As a result, there was a significant increase in both knowledge and practical skills among participants. The findings showed a 30-point (51.4%) increase in participants’ knowledge, and 97% of them expressed a strong commitment to adopting healthier behaviors. Moreover, 97% of participants reported high satisfaction with the program, citing the usefulness of the content, engaging materials, and effective delivery methods. This PkM initiative demonstrated its effectiveness in enhancing knowledge and shaping positive attitudes among women of reproductive age regarding healthy lifestyle practices to prevent obesity.

Abstract

Stroke is a type of catastrophic illness characterized by high incidence and disability rates. It significantly impairs physical function and increases the risk of developing pressure ulcers. Pressure ulcers, or decubitus ulcers, occur due to prolonged pressure, friction, and moisture exposure, leading to skin tissue damage in areas of the body that bear weight during periods of immobility. Family support plays a crucial role in the rehabilitation of stroke patients, particularly in providing basic care, assisting with mobility, and preventing complications. This community engagement program (PkM) aimed to enhance family capacity in managing pressure ulcers through educational and practical interventions. Family involvement was facilitated through structured education and hands-on training to encourage active participation in supporting comprehensive patient recovery. The PkM activities were delivered using an educational and participatory approach to 25 participants, all of whom were family members of stroke patients currently hospitalized at Grandmed Hospital, Lubuk Pakam. The program implementation consisted of four stages: preparation, sample selection, execution, and evaluation. The results showed a significant improvement in participants’ knowledge, with an average increase of 32.6 points (59.1%) regarding the role of families in pressure ulcer care. Additionally, 92% of participants demonstrated competency in performing basic stroke care, and 96% expressed high satisfaction with the program. This PkM initiative effectively strengthened the role of families in managing pressure ulcers in stroke patients, thereby contributing to increased patient motivation and improved quality of life.

Abstract

Skin care is essential to protect the skin from damage, which can be achieved through healthy dietary intake and the direct application of topical products. The wound healing process plays a vital role in restoring tissue integrity and normal function. This process occurs in several phases, namely inflammation, proliferation, and maturation. The leaves of the kelakai plant have been utilized as the active ingredient in topical gel formulations due to their perceived safety and effectiveness. A gel formulation with a 15% w/w concentration has been proven to be the most effective, capable of reducing burn wound area by up to 13.75%, particularly in severe burn cases. These findings indicate the strong potential of kelakai leaf extract gel as an alternative treatment for burn injuries. A community service activity (PkM) involving 97 residents of Pantai Labu District was conducted with the aim of increasing public awareness regarding the proper and safe selection of topical medications. Participants were educated on the benefits, safety, and stability of the kelakai leaf extract gel, including the importance of appropriate pH levels that are compatible with human skin. Post-activity assessments revealed an increase in participants’ knowledge by 50% and 30% based on pre-test and post-test results, respectively, indicating the success of the program in enhancing understanding of plant-based topical gels as an alternative burn treatment. The PkM team also encouraged participants to be more selective and cautious when using similar products. This educational initiative successfully improved public knowledge regarding the use of medicinal plants as herbal remedies for burn wounds.

Abstract

Asthma is a respiratory disorder characterized by inflammation, airway narrowing, and excessive mucus production, which leads to shortness of breath. A commonly applied therapy during acute asthma attacks is the use of a nebulizer, which delivers medication in the form of vapor inhaled directly into the airways. The effectiveness of nebulizer therapy is influenced by the physiological condition of the patient’s airway prior to the treatment. Warm water consumption has been shown to support respiratory function by maintaining mucosal hydration and softening mucus secretions. This community service program aimed to educate the public on the potential benefits of warm water consumption in enhancing the effectiveness of nebulizer therapy in relieving airway obstruction among asthma patients. The program was implemented with 25 participants, all of whom were asthma patients at Grandmed Hospital in Lubuk Pakam. The educational activity included delivering the intervention material, followed by interactive sessions such as Q & A and group discussions. Knowledge improvement was assessed by comparing post-test scores with pre-test scores. The results demonstrated a notable increase in participants’ knowledge, with an average score improvement of 34.1 points or 64.6%. Additionally, approximately 98% of participants reported that the educational session was beneficial and easy to understand. Participants showed improved comprehension of nebulizer mechanisms and recognized the importance of warm water intake prior to therapy. The educational intervention successfully enhanced participants understanding and encouraged the application of warm water consumption before nebulizer therapy, potentially leading to more effective treatment outcomes.

Abstract

Adolescent mental health is an important aspect in optimal growth and development, but mental health literacy among students is still low. This community service activity aims to improve students' mental health literacy through interactive education at SMA Muhammadiyah 16 Lubuk Pakam. The method used is a participatory education approach with a combination of pretest-posttest, discussion, games, and educational videos. The activity was carried out in May 2025 involving 30 grade XI students who were selected purposively. The pretest results showed that only 33% of students had a good understanding of mental health. After the intervention, there was a significant increase, with 90% of students reaching the "good" category and the average score increasing from 39.6 to 92.0. Qualitative evaluation showed that 83% of students felt better able to recognize symptoms of stress, and 70% were interested in forming regular discussion groups. This activity also encouraged students' openness to counseling and received appreciation from the school. The discussion emphasized that interactive-based education is effective in increasing understanding and positive attitudes towards mental health. However, the limited duration of the activity is an obstacle in deepening the material. Therefore, it is recommended that similar programs be conducted periodically and integrated into the school guidance and counseling system through peer counselor training and mental health clubs. Overall, this educational approach proves that schools can be a strategic place to build psychological literacy in adolescents systematically and sustainably.

Abstract

Background: Falls are a common health challenge experienced by the elderly and can significantly affect their quality of life. The leading causes of falls include decreased trunk muscle strength and disturbances in the vestibular system. Ironically, many older adults are unaware that these risks can be reduced through simple and regular physical activity. Therefore, interventions in the form of education and structured exercise, delivered directly at the community level, are considered a strategic approach to promote preventive behavior. Objective: This Community Partnership Program (PKM) aimed to  improve the knowledge, practical skills, and motivation of elderly individuals in preventing fall risks through trunk muscle exercises and Cawthorne-Cooksey exercises. Method: The activity was conducted at Pagar Jati Public Health Center, Lubuk Pakam, involving 20 elderly participants. It consisted of two main sessions: an educational session covering the causes of falls, the role of trunk muscles, and the body's balance system; and a practical session where participants performed both exercises under the guidance of the implementation team. Evaluation was carried out through initial discussions, observation of participant engagement, and a simple pre-test and post-test. Results: The program showed a significant impact. A total of 85% of participants demonstrated improved understanding of fall risk and its prevention, 78% were able to perform the exercises correctly, and 90% expressed a commitment to continue the exercises independently at home. Participant satisfaction reached 92%. The elderly showed high enthusiasm throughout the activity, with many stating that this was the first time they realized the importance of light exercises in maintaining balance. Conclusion: This activity successfully enhanced the cognitive and motor skills of elderly participants in fall prevention. The combination of trunk muscle exercises and Cawthorne-Cooksey exercises proved effective in improving postural control, vestibular adaptation, and overall body stability. This hands-on approach is highly effective and recommended for sustainable implementation within community-based health promotion and prevention programs for the elderly.

Abstract

Hypertension has become one of the non-communicable diseases with the most affected case growth rate in the contemporary era, especially in rural areas. Community involvement is very important in the success of hypertension prevention programs. The elderly are susceptible to hypertension because body functions decline with age. Other factors that play a role are unhealthy lifestyles, such as the tendency to consume junk food, smoke, drink alcohol, and rarely exercise. Junk food is usually high in calories, fat, salt (sodium), and low in fiber, which can trigger high blood pressure. Cigarettes are also dangerous because the nicotine content can stimulate the release of adrenaline, which can trigger adrenaline secretion. Analysis of community involvement to see the extent to which the community of Perbarakan Village, Pagar Merbau District, participates in the hypertension prevention program. Activities through counseling, blood pressure checks, and training of posyandu cadres. The method used is participatory and directly involves residents, especially the elderly and health cadres. Activities are carried out through health counseling, blood pressure checks, and training of posyandu cadres. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and questionnaires to determine community understanding and participation. The result is that the community already understands hypertension well enough, but active involvement still needs to be improved with a pre-test score of 16.20, while after counseling it increased to 18.86. Therefore, a stronger communication and empowerment strategy is needed so that the community wants to live a healthy life sustainably.
