Abstract

The modernization of lifestyle among today’s adolescents has led to significant changes in daily consumption patterns. Many teenagers tend to prefer fast food that is high in sugar, salt, and fat, but low in nutritional value. This condition may lead to various long-term health problems if not accompanied by adequate nutritional education and awareness. This community service activity aims to integrate pharmaceutical science concepts into the education of healthy and functional food preparation at SMK Negeri Pantai Labu. The implementation method consisted of several stages: initial observation of students’ knowledge and habits, delivery of interactive educational materials, hands-on practice in preparing functional food products, and evaluation through pre-test and post-test instruments. This activity involved 30 students from the culinary arts department. Evaluation results showed a significant improvement across all aspects: knowledge of healthy food increased from 55.0 to 85.3; understanding of functional food from 47.5 to 82.0; understanding of active compounds from 41.2 to 78.5; food preparation skills from 50.4 to 80.6; and awareness of food safety from 52.8 to 86.7. The average overall improvement reached 67.3%. This community service activity concludes that an educational approach based on pharmaceutical science, when applied through culinary practice, is proven to be effective in enhancing students’ competencies, not only in terms of academic knowledge and health awareness but also in fostering entrepreneurial potential in the field of local food.

Abstract

Type II Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic condition whose prevalence continues to rise in Indonesia. Although insulin therapy is commonly administered to patients, their knowledgeparticularly regarding the appropriate timing of insulin injection remains relatively low. This limited understanding may contribute to unstable blood glucose levels, highlighting the need for personalized management strategies, especially in the scheduling of insulin administration. This community engagement program was implemented through health education and counseling methods aimed at promoting a more proactive and preventive approach in the management of Type II DM. The educational strategy adopted was both informative and interactive, designed to enhance the comprehension of 18 outpatient participants diagnosed with Type II DM. The findings demonstrated that participants showed strong enthusiasm throughout the intervention, driven by a recognized need to better understand insulin injection timing and postprandial glucose control. Moreover, there was a measurable improvement in knowledge, with an average increase of 27.7 points from pre-test to post-test assessments. This outcome affirms the effectiveness of the health education activity in achieving the intended objectives of the program. Participants also expressed interest in the continuation of similar educational efforts in the future. Additionally, the distribution of educational materials in the form of leaflets containing guidance on insulin injection schedules, meal timing, and adherence to effective insulin therapy protocols served as a practical tool for application at home. In conclusion, this educational initiative successfully enhanced patient health literacy and provided effective guidance to support diabetes self-management. Furthermore, the activity contributed to improving the overall quality of life for patients by supporting better glycemic control and preventing long-term complications.

Abstract

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is one of the key contributors to the deterioration of skin structure and function. Its harmful effects include premature aging, hyperpigmentation, and increased risk of skin cancer. One of the underlying mechanisms of this damage is the formation of free radicals, which trigger oxidative stress, compromise cellular integrity, and reduce the skin’s natural defense capacity. The use of skin protection products such as sunscreen serves as a preventive measure in daily skincare routines. This community service (PkM) activity was conducted through an interactive model of education and demonstration, aimed at enhancing public knowledge and awareness regarding the benefits of natural antioxidants available in sunscreen gel formulations derived from green tea leaf extract. The program was designed with an educational and participatory approach, in which the materials were delivered through theoretical explanations and simple practical demonstrations. The participants consisted of 25 individuals, both male and female, aged between 17 and 40 years, residing in the Lubuk Pakam area. The results of the activity showed a significant improvement in participants’ knowledge, with an average post-test score of 89.98 compared to a pre-test score of 56.05 indicating a substantial knowledge gain of 33.93 points, which falls into the "very high" category. This community outreach proved effective in increasing public understanding of the use of natural antioxidants in sunscreen products. Abstract

habits have not reached their full potential. Washing hands properly is one of the important yet sometimes overlooked hygiene and healthy living practices. Initial observations at Al-Shafa Kindergarten revealed that most students were unable to perform efficient handwashing techniques according to health standards and were unaware of critical times to wash their hands. This can increase the possibility of disease transmission from unclean hands. The purpose of community service is to build good living habits that can stop the spread of disease through dirty hands. The activity method uses an educational and participatory approach through interactive counseling methods, demonstrations, and direct practice, which are designed according to the characteristics of early childhood. Community service was carried out at Al-Shafa Kindergarten, Lubuk Pakam, Deli Serdang Regency, with 16 children. The results of the Community Service activity showed that 81.3% of children were able to mention important times to wash their hands and 75% of children were able to follow the six steps to wash their hands correctly. This shows that this Community Service activity has achieved a success rate (78.15%) in forming children's understanding and basic skills about PHBS. Health education activities on effective hand washing at Al-Shafa Kindergarten have succeeded in increasing the knowledge and skills of early childhood in maintaining hand hygiene. Interactive, fun, and age-appropriate learning approaches have proven effective in forming clean living behaviors from an early age. The involvement of teachers and the school environment is an important supporting factor in the success of this activity. It is hoped that this education can be the beginning of positive habits that are sustainable in the school environment and at home.

Abstract

Cigarette smoke contains a large number of oxidants or free radicals, along with approximately 4,700 harmful chemical substances. An increase in free radical levels in the body can trigger the formation of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS), which contributes to oxidative stress, especially when there is an imbalance between oxidants and antioxidants. During this process, oxygen (O?) may leak and convert into superoxide radicals (O??), which can stimulate The synthesis of pro-inflammatory mediators like interleukin-6 (IL-6). In this research aims To assess the impact of cigarette smoke exposure on the histological structure of lung tissue in laboratory rats. A Community Service Activity (PkM) involving 70 residents of Pantai Labu Subdistrict Aimed at promoting public awareness regarding the importance of adopting a safe and healthy lifestyle. During the activity, participants received education regarding The damaging influence of cigarette smoke on the body, particularly on, as well as potential of green apple juice as a natural alternative to support lung health.
