Journal of Educational Management Research is an international peer-reviewed journal which publishes original and significant contributions to educational management, administration, and leadership, in its broadest sense, from all over the world. This includes primary research projects in schools and further vocational and higher education institutions. This journal encourages contributions that respond to important issues in management education. Contributions may be either conceptual or empirical and are welcomed from any topic area and country so long as they primarily focus on management or organization in education. Although our core areas of interest are organizational behaviour and management in education, we are also interested in leadership, public relation, human resource management, social issues in management, financial management, organizational development, critical management studies, etc. Authors are strongly encouraged to have their work reviewed and evaluated by their colleagues prior to submission for formal editorial review.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of Strategic Human Resource Management (SHRM) in strengthening the performance of school counselors (Guidance and Counseling teachers) in Islamic educational institutions. This research employs a library research method, with data collected through a review of 30 relevant journal articles published within the last five years. Data analysis is conducted using a descriptive-analytical approach to gain an understanding of the integration between SHRM and counselor performance. The results indicate that counselor performance is a multidimensional construct influenced by both internal and external factors. This performance can be measured through key indicators, including the ability to plan guidance and counseling services, implement basic services, conduct individual and group counseling, engage in cross-professional collaboration, demonstrate understanding of professional ethics, manage administrative and counseling data, and carry out program evaluation and follow-up. All these indicators are closely related to SHRM pillars, namely competency-based recruitment and selection, continuous professional training and development, objective performance appraisal, and organizational support alongside a conducive work culture. This study emphasizes that strengthening counselor performance in Islamic educational institutions cannot be conducted partially but requires a systemic integration between performance indicators and SHRM practices.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the importance of strengthening soft skills in education, which has not been fully accommodated in the formal education system. Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) as value-based institutions have the potential to develop soft skills through the practice of student service. This study aims to reconstruct kiai management based on charismatic leadership as a model for strengthening the soft skills of student servants. The study used a qualitative approach with a case study design at the Al-Yasini Integrated Islamic Boarding School, through interviews, observations, and documentation. The results show that kiai management occurs culturally through values, role models, and interpersonal relationships, and that soft skills strengthening occurs through experiential learning in the practice of service. This study produces a conceptual model that integrates charismatic leadership, the service process, and soft skills strengthening. The contribution of this research lies in the development of a value-based Islamic education management model. It is concluded that kiai management is effective in shaping the character and social readiness of students in a sustainable manner.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the digital pedagogical practices of Generation Z teachers in primary education, focusing on how they design, implement, and adapt digital-based learning, as well as the challenges they encounter. A qualitative case study approach was employed, involving five Generation Z teachers. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, field notes, and documentation, and analyzed using thematic analysis to identify key patterns in instructional design, technology integration, and professional attitudes. The findings reveal that Generation Z teachers actively utilize digital platforms for learning management, assessment, and instructional media, demonstrating creative, flexible, and student-centered approaches. However, challenges remain, including limited infrastructure, unequal access to professional training, and time management constraints. The study implies that effective digital pedagogy among Generation Z teachers is shaped by the integration of pedagogical competence, digital literacy, and adaptive professional attitudes, highlighting the need for continuous support in infrastructure and professional development.

Abstract

This study aims to reposition the adoption of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in education as an epistemic transformation process by examining how digital literacy shapes multidimensional trust and how such trust mediates creativity as an expression of epistemic agency within educational management contexts. A constructivist grounded theory approach was employed, involving 24 participants. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and analysis of AI-assisted academic tasks, and analyzed using open, axial, and selective coding with a constant comparative method. The findings reveal differentiated dimensions of digital literacy (operational, evaluative, reflective, and strategic) that produce layered forms of trust (functional, relational, and epistemic). Only reflective epistemic trust was found to stimulate generative creativity, while functional trust tended to result in reproductive use of AI. The study proposes a conceptual model of “Reflexive TrustMediated Epistemic Agency,” positioning trust as a generative mechanism linking digital literacy and creative transformation. The implications highlight the need for educational management to move beyond utility-based adoption frameworks by fostering evaluative and reflective digital literacy, ensuring that AI serves as a catalyst for meaningful learning transformation rather than merely a productivity tool.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze educational financing systems to improve the quality of education, focusing on three main aspects: planning, implementation, and financial accountability. A qualitative case study approach was employed, with data collected through observations, interviews, and documentation. The participants included school leaders and administrative staff responsible for financial management. The findings reveal that educational financing is systematically planned by identifying priority programs and determining student-related costs, followed by the preparation of an annual school budget plan based on students’ needs. In the implementation stage, government funding is primarily allocated to support national education standards, while additional funding sources, such as community contributions and donations, are used to address unmet needs. Financial accountability is maintained through annual financial reports detailing income and expenditures. The study implies that effective educational financing management requires structured planning, diversified funding sources, and transparent accountability practices. These elements are essential for ensuring financial sustainability and improving educational quality, particularly within the framework of educational management.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the modernization policy of Islamic boarding school education and how it balances the preservation of traditional values with contemporary educational demands. A qualitative approach was employed using a library research method, drawing on scholarly articles, academic books, and relevant policy documents. The findings reveal that modernization in Islamic boarding schools involves curriculum integration between religious and general subjects, innovation in teaching methods, enhancement of institutional management, and the adoption of digital technologies in learning processes. Despite these developments, traditional elements such as the study of classical Islamic texts and the central role of religious scholars remain integral to the educational system. The study implies that modernization policies are essential for strengthening the adaptability and sustainability of Islamic educational institutions. From an educational management perspective, effective integration of innovation and tradition can enhance institutional performance while preserving core values, ensuring that Islamic boarding schools remain relevant in a rapidly changing educational landscape.

Abstract

The growth of nature-based tourism raises environmental concerns if not accompanied by responsible tourist behavior. This study aims to analyze the effect of memorable nature-based tourism experiences on connectedness to nature and tourist satisfaction, and their implications for environmental awareness and environmentally responsible behavioral intentions, from an environmental education perspective. A quantitative explanatory design was employed, with data collected through a survey using questionnaires distributed to tourists selected through purposive sampling. Data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The results indicate that memorable naturebased tourism experiences have a positive and significant effect on both connectedness to nature and tourist satisfaction. Furthermore, these variables positively influence environmental awareness, which emerges as the strongest predictor of environmentally responsible behavioral intentions. These findings highlight the role of tourism experiences as a form of experiential environmental education that shapes tourists’ awareness and behavior. The study implies that destination managers should integrate environmental education strategies into tourism management by designing meaningful experiences that foster learning, awareness, and pro-environmental behavior. Such an approach strengthens the role of tourism as an educational medium for sustainability.

Abstract

This study aims to explore in depth how students perceive family social support in shaping and sustaining their academic achievement. Employing a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design, the study involved five high-achieving senior high school students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews conducted twice with each participant, supported by observation and documentation, and analyzed using phenomenological analysis, including data reduction, identification of significant statements, thematic clustering, and synthesis of essential meanings. The findings reveal that family social support is perceived as a critical psychological experience that contributes to the maintenance of academic achievement. Four major themes emerged: emotional support as a source of psychological safety, appraisal support as reinforcement of academic self-confidence, informational support as adaptive guidance fostering self-regulation, and instrumental support as a symbol of family commitment to education. These findings imply that family support functions as a protective and facilitative system that not only enhances students’ academic performance but also sustains their motivation and psychological well-being.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the influence of work expectations on intention to apply among Generation Z in Indonesia, with a particular focus on the mediating roles of social media use and organizational attractiveness in the context of digital recruitment. A quantitative explanatory approach was employed using a cross-sectional survey of 231 Generation Z individuals preparing to enter the labor market, and the data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares–Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The findings reveal that work expectations do not have a direct effect on intention to apply; however, they significantly influence both social media use and organizational attractiveness. Furthermore, social media use has a significant positive effect on intention to apply, whereas organizational attractiveness does not show a significant influence. Mediation analysis indicates that social media use fully mediates the relationship between work expectations and intention to apply, while organizational attractiveness does not act as a mediator. These results imply that social media serves as a critical mechanism in translating job seekers’ expectations into application intentions, highlighting the importance for organizations to optimize digital recruitment strategies through interactive, informative, and engaging social media content to effectively attract Generation Z talent.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the influence of social media marketing and electronic word of mouth (e-WOM) on purchase intention, with brand equity as a moderating variable, from an educational marketing management perspective. A quantitative approach was employed using purposive sampling. The sample consisted of 150 respondents who are users of digital commerce platforms and are familiar with the studied brand. Data were collected through online questionnaires and analyzed using Partial Least Squares–Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) with SmartPLS 4.0. The results indicate that social media marketing and e-WOM have positive and significant effects on purchase intention. Furthermore, brand equity significantly moderates the relationship between both independent variables and purchase intention, strengthening their effects. These findings suggest that the effectiveness of digital marketing strategies is enhanced when supported by strong brand equity and positive consumer perceptions. From an educational marketing management perspective, this study highlights the importance of integrating digital literacy and strategic marketing education in building sustainable brand value. Organizations should develop structured learning strategies to enhance consumer engagement and brand perception in digital environments.
