Abstract

This study employed a quasi-experimental research using the pretest-posttest design to determine the effect of Predict-Observe-Explain (POE) Strategy on students‟ achievement and attitude towards physics. A total of fifty-nine grade seven students from two intact heterogeneous classes participated in this study. The engage-explore-explain-elaborate-evaluate (5E‟s) learning cycle was utilized in teaching the control group while the POE strategy was utilized in teaching the experimental group. T-test was used in determining the significant differences between the two groups and within each group in terms of achievement and attitude. The findings of the study showed a significant difference (p = 0.00) in the achievement scores of the two groups in the posttest. It was further revealed that the experimental group (m = 11.47) performed better in the posttest than the control group (m = 8.86), and registered a significant change in attitude towards physics (p = 0.00) from neutral (m = 3.38) to positive (m = 3.76), while the control group maintained a neutral attitude. This suggests that the POE strategy positively influenced the academic performance and attitude of the students towards physics. Keywords: predict-observe-explain, 5E‟s learning cycle, attitude towards physics, students‟ achievement. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpmipa/v21i1.pp78-94

Abstract

This descriptive study assessed the information and communications technology (ICT) integration in teaching Math and Science, and identified issues affecting technology integration. Nine Math teachers, and eight Science teachers was chosen as participant in this study. A survey instrument with Likert-five point scale was developed to explore participants’ perceptions towards ICT integration in teaching math and science in high school. The results showed that the status of technology integration in Math and Science is well-implemented. However, teachers needed time to plan and prepare technology-based instructional materials and update their skills in technology and pedagogy. They also needed to be supervised closely through feedback and mentoring. In terms of professional advancement, they needed to be updated and trained on curriculum development, pedagogy, and technology. Equipment and facilities needed to be increased, improved, and maintained, most especially the internet connection. It can be concluded that curriculum and instruction including faculty are greatly dependent on supervision, professional development, and equipment and facilities. The aforementioned three areas are well-implemented which made curriculum and instruction, and faculty extensively implemented. Keywords: ICT integration program, teaching math and science, high school. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpmipa/v21i1.pp95-108

Abstract

This research determined the effects of Biology YouTube videos with focus questions on the concept understanding and media-literacy skills of students aged fifteen in the topic areas of Human Digestion, Heredity, Biodiversity and Interactions. A quasi-experimental research design using pretest-posttest was utilized. Students were divided into two randomly selected groups: experimental and control. Results revealed that Biology YouTube videos with focus questions (M = 10.68 ± 2.93) were as good as conventional teaching in enhancing student conceptual understanding (M = 10.69 ± 2.94) of Biology topics (p = .496). The study also showed that the strategy also developed media-literacy skills of the students (p = .000). Furthermore, it was found that conceptual understanding positively and significantly influenced media-literacy skills of students (r = .459; p = .003) and vice-versa (r = .459; p = .003). It is recommended that the strategy introduced in this study be used in facilitating media literacy in other allied science subjects, in other subjects, and in the teaching of media-literacy education to educators and students of different year levels. Keywords: biology youtube videos with focus questions, concept understanding, media-literacy skills. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpmipa/v21i1.pp01-11

Abstract

This study examined the effects of Metacognitive Analogy Instruction (MAI) on the students’ reflective thinking skills in Biology at the secondary level. A two-group pretest-posttest quasi experimental design was used to teach the control group using Non- Metacognitive Analogy Instruction (NMAI) which includes traditional way of teaching like lecture discussions, while the experimental group was taught using the Metacognitive Analogy Instruction. Results showed that students exposed to MAI improved better (M= 11.30) than those exposed to NMAI on the Habitual Action dimension (M= 10.09) of reflective thinking (p= 0.001) but the two groups had comparable performance (p= 0.42; 0.18; 0.09; & 0.10) on the Understanding (M= 14.40), Reflection (M= 12.47), and Critical Reflection dimensions (M= 12.73). The improvement of the MAI group in their overall reflective thinking skills scores particularly in the Habitual Action dimension could be attributed to the use of metacognitive analogies as part of the class instruction which required a considerable amount of focus and thinking. Hence, it is recommended that MAI be used for classroom instruction, curricular and instructional development, and teacher trainings to improve reflective thinking skills among students. Keywords: metacognition, metacognitive analogy, reflective thinking.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpmipa/v21i1.pp12-21

Abstract

This study determined the effect of the model-based learning approach on students’ academic performance and attitudes in Earth science as well as the teachers perception. A total of four science teachers served as teacher-respondents and sixty-one of ninth-grade students served as student-participants in the research. To answer the objectives of the study, the science attitudes scale, standardized test, and perception survey questionnaire were administered. T-test was utilized to determine the significant difference in the students’ academic performance and attitudes in learning earth science and SWOT analysis was utilized on teachers’ perception. Findings revealed that the model-based learning and conventional approaches are both effective in enhancing students’ academic performance in earth science which the first approach has a positive effect on the student’s attitude toward science. Moreover, SWOT analysis revealed that the model-based learning approach is a learner-centered and teacher-facilitated approach that adheres to the goal and principles of K to 12 Basic Education Program of enhancing learners interest and motivation, maximizing learners’ 21st-century skills and scientific skills leading into holistically skill-competent learners through the model building. The overall result indicates that the model-based learning approach is a promising teaching strategy that can help improve students’ academic performance and develop a positive mindset in learning science. Keywords: model-based approach, attitudes toward earth science, academic performance. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpmipa/v21i1.pp49-66

Abstract

The main goal of this study was to prove the effect of inquiry-based instruction through virtual simulation on students’ performance in Physics. Three heterogeneous classes at grades seven with 141 students participated in the research, and a quasi-experimental design with pretest and posttest was used. The participants were divided into three groups for the three different teaching strategies, such as; inquiry-based instruction, virtual simulation, and inquiry-based instruction through virtual simulation taught by the same teacher. The pretest and posttest scores of the three groups were analyzed using comparative analysis, an F-test to determine if there is a significant difference in the students’ performance in learning the Physics concept before and after applying the inquiry-based method and virtual simulation strategy of teaching. The same was used to compare the difference between their performance before and after using inquiry-based instruction through virtual simulation. The findings revealed that inquiry-based instruction caused satisfying acquisition of scientific concepts related to content taught in Physics. The outcomes also supported that all the three teaching strategies have a highly notable effect on the students’ performance in Physics. As a result, the inquiry-based instruction through virtual simulations had a potential to help grade seven students improve their performance in Physics. Keywords: inquiry-based instruction, virtual simulations, Physics teaching. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpmipa/v21i1.pp22-34
