Applied Linguistics Innovative Approaches and Emerging Trends is a scholarly journal published twice a year in March and September under the patronage of Yayasan Nurul Iman Muara Gading Mas. The aim of the journal is to publish articles that appeal to its wide readership and build connections between academic theories, discourses, and investigative methods across diverse fields of study. The journal invites contributions that provide critical reflection on current, cutting-edge theory and practice within the discipline. The journals Forum section is intended to stimulate debate between authors and the broader applied linguistics community and allow a faster turnaround for short pieces. Forum articles typically provide commentary on research issues or professional practices or respond to a published paper.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the forms of code-mixing in the Denny Sumargo and Fiki Naki video podcast. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method. The data were sourced from a video podcast episode titled “Playboy internasional? Bucin Serius Mau Nikah Muda Sama Tugba!! (Fiki Naki)”. Data collection utilized observational and note-taking techniques. Furthermore, the data analysis was conducted through six stages: unitizing, sampling, recording, reducing, inferring, and narrating. The results revealed 91 utterances containing code-mixing within the podcast. Specifically, these consisted of 40 code-mixings in the form of words, 27 in the form of phrases, and 24 in the form of clauses.

Abstract

This study investigates the phonotactic architecture of the Buginese language to determine whether syllable constraints differ significantly across word classes. The primary objective is to comparatively analyze the structural boundaries of nouns, verbs, and adjectives. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive approach supported by quantitative cross-tabulation, this research examines a corpus of ninety basic root words. Data was purposefully categorized by syntactic function, with adjectives specifically sourced from the Sidrap dialect to control for regional morphophonological variations. The findings reveal a strict tripartite typological divide, proving that phonotactic patterns are not homogeneous across the lexicon. Nouns exhibit profound diachronic stability, heavily favoring disyllabic open structures while uniquely permitting pure vowel onsets. Conversely, verbs demonstrate a dynamic, front-heavy tetrasyllabic expansion driven by prefixation and initial consonant gemination, yet they absolutely enforce an open-vowel termination. Adjectives present the highest structural density, utilizing a back-heavy architecture with complex closed codas to signal grammatical intensification. These distinct phonetic territories demonstrate that Buginese phonotactics function as active, pre-lexical syntactic markers, where the physical shape of a word categorizes its grammatical role before semantic decoding.

Abstract

This study explores the intersection of cognitive linguistics and literature to evaluate the humanistic values embedded within metaphors in the short story Laki-laki di Taman Senja by Muhamad Abi Fadila. Utilizing a qualitative content analysis combined with a stylistic approach, the research systematically classified textual excerpts against established cognitive metaphorical source domains. The analysis identified four primary conceptual categories manipulated by the author which are the human body, animals and plants, light and darkness, and direction and movement. Rather than functioning purely as aesthetic stylistic embellishments, these four distinct linguistic structures operate as essential cognitive frameworks. They map the protagonist's complex emotional landscapes, directly articulating three major humanistic theme which are the profound existential struggle against modern urban monotony, the transformative power of non-judgmental empathy, and the fundamental necessity of self-acceptance. Ultimately, these metaphorical mappings successfully bridge internal psychological realities with external social dynamics, offering profound insights into the human condition and individual resilience amidst contemporary societal alienation.

Abstract

The role of digital Literature in increasing literacy and reading interest has now become a crucial instrument in the era of technological transformation. However, most prior studies still fokus on basic techological mastery, leaving a gap in research regarding how digital literature integrates cyber proficiency with humanistic values in the Society 5.0 era. This study aims to analyze the influence of digital literature on enhancing digital literacy and reading interest by aligning technological, ethical, and aesthetic aspects. The method used is a literature review analyzing ten scientific articles relevant to literature learning, creative media (poetry, short stories, novels), and the Society 5.0 ecosystem. The data synthesis results indicate that the utilization of digital literature and e-learning innovations significantly boosts reading interest and stimulates the creative processes of the younger generation. Concurrently, Navigating and appreciating cyber works sharpen readers’ digital literacy skills while contextually internalizing character values, ethics, and aesthetics. In conclusion, digital literature in the Society 5.0 era effectively functions as a dual medium that not only hones technological skills but also preserves the humanistic values of readers.

Abstract

This study investigates the emotive functions and cathartic effects in the language register used by Maxim online motorcycle taxi drivers in Palu City, Central Sulawesi. Using a descriptive qualitative method, data were collected through field observations, semi-structured interviews, and note-taking from three purposively selected informants. The analysis was conducted using the multidimensional register framework developed by Biber and Conrad (2009, 2019). The results show that the drivers’ registers consist of three main types: (1) adoption of digital terms (cancel, on/off, on-bid, nge-tap), (2) metaphorical extensions (gacor, anyep, paus), and (3) interference from the local Kaili language (balengga). Functionally, these registers play important roles in improving operational efficiency, providing emotional catharsis (e.g., gacor for expressing happiness and anyep for venting frustration), and constructing group identity within the driver community.
