Abstract

The purpose of this research is to ascertain the impact of metacognitive methods on students' reading comprehension as well as the attitudes of students about their usage. According to(Navarro, 2021), metacognition is the awareness of and control over one's own thinking and learning processes. Quantitative research is carried out using an experimental research design. Tests and questionnaires were employed by researchers as data collection tools. In this research, two classes—X.6 (Control Class) and X.7 (Experimental Class)—were chosen using cluster random sampling. According to the findings, the experimental group's average post-test score was 83.29, whereas the control group's was 78.57. The independent sample t-test was shown to have a lower (two-tailed) significance of 0.010 (0.010 0.05). Then, in the control class, 0.010 (0.010 0.05) is shown. As a result, Ho is considered unacceptable but Ha is welcomed. Conclusion: Students' reading comprehension is impacted by metacognitive tactics used in reading instruction.In addition, the researcher also got the results from the questionnaire data, the majority of experimental class students agreed and strongly agreed on the three items given on the affective, behavioral and cognitive aspects. It can be assumed that most of the experimental class students were influenced by Metacognitive Strategies in improving reading comprehension

Abstract

The textual meta function is about the verbal world, especially the flow of information in a text, and is concerned with clauses as messages. In each meta function an analysis of a clause gives a different kind of structure composed from a different set of elements. The aim of this study was to analyze and identify the functions took from three different online newspapers, Jakarta Post, Jakarta Globe, and Tempo, with the context of educational news on the topic, "Merdeka Belajar Curriculum". This study used a qualitative approach as its methodology. The data was taken from the websites of Jakarta Post, Jakarta Globe, and Tempo. A functional English grammar was employed to analyze the data. Based on the study's findings, it identified three themes present in the Jakarta Post, Jakarta Globe, and Tempo: topical, interpersonal, and textual. Topical theme consisted of 43.5% of the article is unmarked theme and 16.5% marked theme. Interpersonal theme consisted of 3% of the article is modal adjunct, 4% is vocatives, and 6.5% is finite. Textual theme consisted of 2% of the article is conjunctive adjunct and 24.5% is conjunctions. The result is that in online newspapers related to education, topical themes are more prevalent, whereas interpersonal themes are less common. The function of Theme-Rheme used on educational news has a different definition for each type. In the findings, topical themes are more prevalent in the news. The topical theme used a simple structure so the article can be understood. However, the percentage of each type is different between the three newspapers, the effectiveness of each media in conveying information based on its advantages and disadvantages is constant

Abstract

This study, conducted at a private university in Kuningan, West Java, aimed to understand the comprehension of learners based on Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) in Extensive Reading classes as well as to identify the reasons why some students find it challenging to understand reading based on HOTS in these classes. The three steps of the HOTS definition by Anderson and Krathwohl (2001) were analysis (C4), evaluation (C5), and creation (C6). The research is descriptive-qualitative, and the methods for gathering data include interviewing and observation. Second-semester students at a private university in Kuningan, West Java, served as the study's subjects. The observation's findings showed that the majority of second-semester students were capable of analyzing the information (Analyzing, C4), evaluating the text's main ideas (Evaluating, C5), and coming up with new ideas to use in other situations (Creating, C6), whether outside of the classroom or on other occasions. Moreover, based on the results of interviews with 10 students in the classroom, there were 5 main factors that affect the students’ reading comprehension based on HOTS which were: lack of vocabulary, lack of focus, lack of time, not having basic knowledge and not interesting in reading

Abstract

This research aims to analyze and identify intrinsic elements in the form of theme, figurative language, and diction, then analyze extrinsic elements in the form of social elements in poetry making and analyze racism reflected in Audre Lorde's poems entitled Power (1978), Who Said It Was Simple (1973) and A Woman Speaks (1984). The method use in this research was a qualitative method. Reading the poem in order to comprehend its overall meaning and discover the meaning which was primarily the essence related to the topic was how the data was collected. This research, there were found 16 data from three themes, 42 figurative languages, 38 dictions, and 17 racism data from three Audre Lorde poems. In addition, There were various manifestations of racism in the poem "Power," including skin color, injustice, segregation, and racial prejudice. The poem "Who Said It Was Simple" has elements of racism related to homophobia, gender, and skin color. The poem "A woman speaks" contains multiple instances of racism, including prejudice based on race, gender, and skin tone. This research is recommended for someone who is interested in literary works, especially poetry, but further research can analyze more broadly in other literary works such as novels, short stories and, songs

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify the politeness strategies used by Taylor Swift and Paul Rudd in the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon YouTube videos "Taylor Swift Talk RecordBreaking Midnight Album, Music Video Cameos and Easter Eggs" and "Paul Rudd Compares His Men's Health Shoot with Jonathan Majors' (Extended)" when they decide to use particular politeness strategies in communication. The research employed a qualitative descriptive method using an observational data collecting technique is applied to analyze the speakers' manner politeness strategies affect the communication between the speaker and hearer. Data collected from observation were analyzed using discourse analysis interpretation and were classified regarding the Brown and Levinson (1987) theory. This research found that the speakers both of Taylor and Paul prevalence the positive politeness strategy when they communicating in Jimmy Fallon’s show. the positive politeness strategy that appeared in Taylor Swift that she is usually showing exaggerate (interest approval, sympathy with Hearer) while Paul Rudd deals with his character who really like making a joke almost in the whole conversation. Besides, the differences also followed by the second strategies that revealed by Taylor and Paul. Taylor Swift commonly chosen negative politeness strategy and Paul Rudd deals with off-record politeness strategy

Abstract

In 2023, the media in the process of learning English is veryimportant. This is evidenced by a needs analysis with 26 students and teachers of English class V . This paper aims to investigate the needs of students and also find out the results of scrabble games on transportation, professions, weather and seasons. This study used the Borg & Gall Research and Development (R&D) model. It used several steps including Research & Information Gathering, Develop the initial form of the product, Revise the product, Product testing, Final product revision. The research subjects were 26 fifth grade students at SDN Gading Kasri Malang. This study found that scrabble games are valid in language (92%) and media (97%) and suitable for use as complementary media on transportation, profession, weather and season from the satisfaction questionnaire about this product the percentage is around 14% agree and 84% strongly agree. Abstract

This qualitative research is intended to find out students' views about whether comic media can be used as a medium for learning English. This research was conducted at SMPN 2 Dau Satu Atap involving 22 students of grade 7. The researcher as a key instrument used interviews to obtain the required data. Students were asked whether students had ever read comics; students' feelings when reading comics; and students' views on the use of comics as a medium for learning English. The data were obtained through interviews, then transcribed, read through, and classified student answers. The final finding, which was interpreted in terms of comics, was that there were 16 students who liked reading comics and 6 students who did not like comics. There are more than 73% of students in grade 7 who like to read comics and students say they are interested in using comic media as a medium for learning English.
