Abstract

The main focus of this research is to develop a children's storybook based on the rich cultural heritage of the Bawean ethnic group, with a secondary aim of supporting and accelerating the School Literacy Movement (GLS) at the elementary school level. The specific target of this study is to develop, test the validity, and examine the practicality of a storybook grounded in Baweanese cultural heritage. The outcome of the storybook development can serve as a reference or supplementary reading material to help build a literate generation on Bawean Island. This study employs the Research and Development (R&D) method using the Borg and Gall model. This model was chosen due to its detailed development stages and its focus on the readability of the developed instructional material. However, due to time and resource limitations, the researcher was unable to implement the full Borg and Gall procedure. Product trials were conducted at a small and large scale in two elementary schools on Bawean Island. The validation process involved a series of assessments, including content evaluation by teachers, practicality assessments, and user responses from students. Data collected from surveys during the development phase were used as the basis for product revisions. The feasibility of the learning material was assessed by practitioners, language experts, media experts, and content experts. Validated aspects included: (a) content, (b) grammar, (c) illustrations, and (d) organization. The results yielded scores ranging from 85–100%, indicating the product is feasible and can be used to enhance GLS.

Abstract

Independent Learning emphasizes student autonomy, critical thinking, and creativity, positioning teachers as facilitators in the learning process. English teachers, tasked with implementing this approach, must align their content knowledge and pedagogical understanding with its learner-centered principles. The study adopts a small scale quantitative survey which distributed to 35 sample of English teachers across elementary, junior, and senior high schools in Indonesia that invited by a Telegram and Whatsapp Group invitation and sampled insidentaly. The findings indicate that while most English teachers hold strong beliefs in the importance of Independent Learning, their knowledge of its principles remains shallow, creating a disconnect between endorsement and practical implementation. Thus, this findings aim to provide insights into teachers’ cognitive and affective dimensions influencing policy implementation, offering theoretical advancements in education and practical implications for professional development, policy formulation, and classroom practices. By examining the intersection of teachers' knowledge and beliefs, this research seeks to support effective integration of Independent Learning in English language education, fostering an environment conducive to holistic student development.

Abstract

Communication competence is the crucial aspect in communication activities, especially in the college. Therefore, college students must have a sufficient competence in communication including English communication skills. As one of the English communication skills, particulary in Semantics, the ability of using lexical relation is important. Based on that phenomena, this study tries to explore the semantic analysis of lexical relations in college students' interactions to uncover the ways meaning is constructed and conveyed in everyday academic communication. By examining spoken and written exchanges among students, the research focuses on identifying types of lexical relations, including synonymy, antonymy, hyponymy, meronymy, and collocation. The data were collected through recorded group discussions. A qualitative approach was employed to analyze the lexical choices. Findings reveal that students frequently use synonymy and collocation to ensure clarity and fluency in their conversations, while antonymy and hyponymy are used to emphasize contrast and specificity. The study highlights the importance of raising awareness of semantic relationships in language use, especially in academic discourse, to improve communication competence among students. This research contributes to the field of Semantics by providing insights into how lexical relations shape meaning in real life academic interactions and offers implications for language teaching.

Vocabulary is an important component when learning English because without studying vocabulary, it will be difficult to understand the language. Therefore, effective teaching is necessary for students to comprehend the vocabulary being taught. Teaching strategies can help teachers in teaching vocabulary. This research aimed to identify the strategies used by an English teacher in teaching vocabulary to students at a Vocational High School. A qualitative approach was employed, using semi-structured interviews to collect data from one English teacher at Vocational High School. The results showed that teacher used texts to present the word. Students used printed or online dictionaries to translate the vocabulary found in the texts. The teacher reported no difficulties in applying this strategy. The assessment was conducted by asking questions related to the vocabulary in the texts, and feedback was given after the assessment. The teacher also developed and evaluated the strategies to adapt to the students’ classroom conditions. However, the respondent noted that several students were distracted by the media used during the learning activities. It is suggested that future researchers explore additional vocabulary teaching strategies and offer recommendations for optimizing media use to enhance learning outcomes.

This study examines the use of contrast language styles in Instagram captions written by Taylor Swift, employing a descriptive qualitative method and Tarigan’s (2009) framework. The data consist of 37 captions posted between February and November 2024. The analysis reveals 66 instances of contrast language styles, with Hyperbole (46.97%) as the most dominant, followed by Climax (31.82%), Litotes (10.61%), Paradox (6.06%), Oxymoron (4.55%), and Irony (0%). These stylistic choices reflect Swift’s rhetorical strategy to enhance emotional resonance and engagement with her audience. The findings highlight the role of contrastive styles in shaping online persona and social media communication within a sociolinguistic context.

Abstract

This article examines the speech delivered in a YouTube video by Haris Azhar and Fatia Maulidiyanti, which led to a defamation lawsuit filed by a high-ranking Indonesian official. Using a forensic linguistic approach, the study investigates whether the utterances constitute defamatory speech or protected public criticism. A descriptive qualitative method is employed to analyze the lexical, syntactic, pragmatic, and discourse-level features of the video. The analysis identifies three categories of speech—false factual claims, critical opinions, and data-driven statements—and finds that the utterances fall primarily within the latter two, characterized by cautious language such as “allegedly” and “according to reports.” These linguistic mitigations indicate a lack of intent to defame and reflect research-based criticism. The study concludes that the speech acts, from a forensic linguistic perspective, do not fulfill the criteria for criminal defamation, but rather exemplify constitutionally protected freedom of expression.
