Abstract

This study examines the relationship between group cohesiveness and decision-making to consume e-cigarettes among female students at the Faculty of Social Sciences (FIS), State University of Jakarta (UNJ). Group cohesiveness is defined as the strength of bonds between group members, encompassing interpersonal attachment, shared goals, and group activities. The study adopts a quantitative approach using bivariate analysis methods, including normality tests, linearity tests, simple linear regression, t-tests, and chi-square tests, to analyze the influence of group cohesiveness on decision-making. The results reveal that while group cohesiveness has a positive relationship with the decision to consume e-cigarettes, the effect is not statistically significant. Key findings highlight that group cohesiveness is characterized by emotional closeness, social interaction, and a sense of belonging. However, decision-making regarding e-cigarette consumption is influenced more by individual comfort and social dynamics within the group. The study concludes that group cohesiveness, though important for fostering a sense of belonging and interaction, does not significantly drive the decision to consume e-cigarettes. This research underscores the need for educational programs to raise awareness of the positive and negative impacts of group cohesiveness and the health risks associated with e-cigarette use. Specific initiatives targeting female students are recommended to mitigate the adoption of risky behaviors influenced by peer groups.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the extent to which interactions between parents and out-of-town students at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Law, Jakarta State University (FISH UNJ), influence their self-confidence in navigating academic and social life. Regular and high-quality communication between out-of-town students and their parents is believed to positively contribute to the students' emotional stability and confidence in facing various challenges away from home. Utilizing a quantitative approach through surveys, this research employs structured questionnaires to measure two primary variables: the frequency of communication with parents and the self-confidence levels of students. Data analysis is conducted using simple linear regression analysis to identify the causal relationship between these variables. The findings of this study are expected to provide both theoretical and practical insights into the significance of family communication in supporting the psychological development of out-of-town students.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the influence of the competence of thesis supervisors on student motivation in writing theses at the Jakarta State University (UNJ) Communication Science Study Program. The method used in this research is a quantitative approach with survey techniques. Data was collected by distributing questionnaires to 100 students who were in the process of writing their thesis. Data analysis was carried out using simple linear regression to test the influence of supervisory lecturer competence on student motivation. The research results show that there is a significant positive influence between the competence of supervisors and student motivation. The higher the competence of the supervisor, the higher the students' motivation to complete their thesis. The average supervisory lecturer competency score is in the "agree" or "high" category, while student motivation is also in the same category. The results of the analysis of the coefficient of determination show that 90.2% of the variation in student motivation can be explained by the competence of the supervisor, while the remaining 9.8% is influenced by other factors that were not studied. It is hoped that this research can contribute to developing the quality of guidance in the UNJ Communication Studies Program and increase understanding of the importance of the role of supervisors in the thesis preparation process. Therefore, recommendations for increasing lecturer competence and developing a more systematic guidance program are very necessary to support student motivation in writing their theses.
