Abstract

Imam al-Haramain al-Juwaini is widely recognized as one of the foremost intellectual figures in Islamic legal history, particularly for his contributions to the development of usul al-fiqh and the refinement of the Shafi‘i school. His magnum opus, Nihayah al-Matlab fi Dirayah al-Madhhab, is not merely a compilation of classical legal opinions, but a systematic reconstruction of legal methodology that integrates textual sources (nusus), rational reasoning (‘aql), and the objectives of Islamic law (maqasid al-shari‘ah). This article aims to examine and reconstruct al-Juwaini’s legal thought using a qualitative approach based on library research and textual analysis of both primary and secondary sources. The study employs content analysis to explore the methodological structure, legal reasoning, and contemporary relevance of al-Juwaini’s jurisprudential model. The findings reveal that al-Juwaini succeeded in establishing a dynamic yet principled legal framework rooted in the authority of divine revelation. He harmonized Ash‘arite theology with rational jurisprudence and employed tools such as analogy (qiyas), public interest (maslahah), and maqasid to address complex and disputed legal issues. His thought reflects not only the preservation of the Shafi‘i legacy but also its renewal through critical engagement with evolving social realities. This reconstruction demonstrates that al-Juwaini was both a transmitter and a reformer, whose intellectual legacy offers a valuable foundation for reviving contextual ijtihad in the modern era. Therefore, Nihayah al-Matlab should be regarded as a strategic reference for scholars seeking to develop an adaptive and principled Islamic legal system responsive to contemporary challenges.

Abstract

This article explores the significant influence of Greek philosophy on the development of Islamic theology during the medieval period. This interaction began in the Abbasid era through large-scale translation movements at Bayt al-Hikmah, which enabled the works of Plato, Aristotle, and Plotinus to enter the Islamic intellectual tradition. Muslim philosophers such as al-Kindi, al-Farabi, Ibn Sina, and Ibn Rushd not only adopted but also transformed key concepts of Greek philosophy such as the prime mover, emanation theory, and Aristotelian logic within the framework of Islamic metaphysics and theology. On the other hand, the integration of these ideas provoked critical responses from theological scholars, particularly from the Ashʿarite school and traditionalist circles, who rejected some metaphysical aspects of Greek philosophy deemed incompatible with Islamic revelation. This study employs a historical-philosophical approach and textual analysis of primary sources from both Greek philosophy and classical Islamic theology. The findings reveal that despite tensions between rationalism and scriptural authority, a constructive synthesis occurred, enriching theological argumentation. Aristotelian logic became a crucial methodological tool in the rational development of kalam within the Ashʿarite and Maturidite traditions. Moreover, the intellectual legacy of this synthesis contributed not only to the systematization of Islamic theology but also played a vital role in the transmission of knowledge to the West during the European Renaissance. This article affirms that Greek philosophy served as a dialectical partner in the construction of a dynamic Islamic intellectual tradition.

Abstract

Islamic Religious Education (IRE) has long been dominated by expository and teacher-centered approaches, which often result in weak critical thinking and insufficient internalization of Islamic values among students. This article aims to examine constructivism as an alternative pedagogical approach that promotes active, reflective, and meaningful learning in the context of IRE, through a philosophical lens grounded in Islamic education thought. This study employs a qualitative method with a library research model using descriptive-analytical and philosophical approaches. Data were collected from books, academic journal articles, and relevant and analyzed using hermeneutic interpretation and conceptual triangulation. The findings indicate that constructivist approaches in IRE empower students as active subjects in constructing their understanding of religious knowledge through experience, social interaction, and personal reflection. Strategies such as discussion, case studies, simulations, and project-based learning are proven to enhance critical thinking, contextual comprehension, and the application of Islamic ethics. Philosophically, constructivism aligns with the Islamic principles of tafakkur (contemplation), tadabbur (reflection), and the integration of intellectual and spiritual development. In conclusion, constructivism not only offers an effective pedagogical method but also supports the transformative vision of IRE in nurturing faithful, critical, and socially engaged individuals. Teacher training, curriculum development, and further research are recommended to strengthen the implementation of constructivist approaches in Islamic education.

Abstract

This article explores the dialectic between Islamic symbols and maritime culture in the architectural design of old mosques in Aceh, serving as a religious expression and local identity among coastal Muslim communities. Mosques in Aceh are not merely places of worship but also visual media that record the historical trajectory of Islamization and cultural acculturation. This study aims to reveal how architectural elements such as pillars made from repurposed ship timber, ornamental motifs of fish and waves, and the orientation of buildings facing the sea or river reflect the fusion between Islamic values and local maritime traditions. A qualitative approach is employed through field observations of several historic mosques, including Baiturrahman and Indrapuri Mosques, combined with semiotic analysis of visual symbols and spatial arrangements. The data are derived from architectural observations and historical documents such as Hikayat Aceh and Bustanussalatin. The findings indicate that dominant Islamic symbols have creatively merged with local elements, transforming the mosque into a “visual text” that conveys the values of tawḥīd, maritime identity, and ecological consciousness. The study also highlights the selective process of Islamization, where non-Islamic symbols such as mythical creatures are excluded, while neutral maritime symbols are absorbed into religious constructions. This research concludes with a call for the preservation and digital documentation of Aceh’s old mosque architecture as an integral part of Islamic Nusantara civilization.

Abstract

This article explores the critical interaction between posthumanist philosophy and the concept of khalīfah (vicegerent) in the Qur’an. Posthumanism, as a response to classical humanism, challenges the centrality and superiority of the human being by opening space for non-human agency, including machines, animals, and ecological systems. In contrast, the Islamic worldview upholds the human as khalīfah fī al-arḍ (God’s vicegerent on Earth), bearing moral and spiritual responsibility to safeguard creation. This study aims to analyze how the tension between the posthumanist decentering of the human and the Islamic affirmation of human distinction can be reconciled through an ethical framework grounded in tawḥīd and maqāṣid al-sharīʿah. By applying a historical-philosophical approach and thematic interpretation (tafsīr mawḍūʿī) of Qur’anic verses, particularly QS. Al-Baqarah 30–33, the article finds that both paradigms share common ground, especially in emphasizing the interconnectedness of humans, nature, and technology. While posthumanism stresses ecological responsibility, the Islamic concept of khalīfah may be expanded as a moral foundation to guide technological development for the welfare of all creation. This article argues for the urgent need to develop an Islamic ethics of technology and renew Islamic legal thought (fiqh) to face the posthuman era in a balanced and contextually relevant manner.
