Abstract

The reform of sociology education in the context of sustainability demands a paradigm shift from anthropocentric to biocentric thinking, particularly in preparing future teachers to internalise sustainability values rooted in local wisdom. This study aims to identify and analyse the role of the hidden curriculum in embedding sustainability values in prospective teachers in Maluku, within the context of sociology education. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, document analysis, and focus group discussions (FGDs) involving the Department of Sociology at Universitas Pattimura and selected secondary schools in the Maluku region. The findings reveal that sustainability values are implicitly instilled through local cultural practices, such as Pela Gandong (social solidarity), Sasi Laut (customary marine conservation), and gotong royong (social and economic sustainability). Additionally, local historical narratives and myths contribute to students' ecological awareness. The study highlights the strategic potential of sociology education in shaping a sustainability-oriented mindset among future educators. Its novelty lies in identifying a contextual and applicable model of hidden curriculum based on local wisdom. The main recommendation is to design a more explicit curriculum that integrates sustainability values into both conceptual and practical dimensions of teaching and learning.

Abstract

This study investigates the effect of self-esteem on mathematics achievement among vocational high school (SMK) students. Mathematics is often perceived as a difficult subject that triggers learning anxiety, especially for vocational students who are required to master numerical skills as part of their competencies. The study was conducted at SMK Negeri 1 Tolitoli using a quantitative approach. Data were collected through a self-esteem questionnaire and documentation of mathematics achievement scores, and analysed using simple regression analysis. The findings reveal that self-esteem has a positive and significant effect on students' mathematics achievement. Higher levels of self-esteem are associated with better academic performance, particularly in mathematics. Theoretically, the study contributes to educational psychology literature by reaffirming the role of self-esteem in the vocational education context. Practically, the findings provide a basis for teachers, counsellors, and policymakers in developing learning strategies and counselling programs that foster students' self-esteem. Future research is recommended to include additional variables, such as motivation, learning anxiety, and social support, to achieve a more comprehensive understanding of the topic.

Abstract

Environmental education plays a crucial role in raising students' awareness of the importance of environmental conservation. However, the learning process in the Biology Education Study Program at Universitas Pattimura still faces challenges, particularly the lack of practical and contextual learning materials. This study aims to develop a contextual-based interactive e-book integrated with waste management practice guidelines to enhance students’ understanding and engagement with local environmental issues. This qualitative research was conducted in May 2025, involving second-semester biology education students. The e-book development followed the adapted Borg & Gall development model. The e-book contains topics on the natural resource potential of Maluku, environmental problems, management strategies, and field practice guides. Trial results showed highly positive student responses, with an average acceptance rate of 86.22%. Students’ understanding scores increased significantly, from a pre-test average of 62.4 to a post-test average of 85.1, with a paired t-test indicating a statistically significant improvement (p < 0.0001). Additionally, 92% of students stated that the material was easier to understand because it related directly to their daily environment. In conclusion, this interactive e-book has proven effective as a contextual learning medium that improves students' comprehension, participation, and practical skills in sustainable environmental management. It also supports the vision of the study program to produce environmentally literate and competent graduates.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze how urban families in Mataram City educate their children in faith amid the algorithmic era. The research is based on shifts in family education patterns due to the penetration of digital technology, which has displaced parental authority, created communication fragmentation, and challenged the continuity of religion's role in guiding children's learning. A descriptive qualitative approach with a multi-unit case study design was employed. The research involved five urban families in Mataram City, selected purposively based on their active use of digital devices, parental involvement in children's education, and the application of religious values in daily life, all of which were relevant to the study's focus. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation, and were then analyzed thematically and interactively with methodological and source triangulation to ensure validity. The findings reveal that digital education and religious values complement each other in maintaining intergenerational harmony. First, the shift of educational authority from parents to digital sources is addressed through collaboration between moral values and technology at home. Second, the fragmentation of communication caused by gadget dominance is mitigated by creating moments of togetherness and reflective dialogue among family members. Third, religious values serve as a moral compass that guides the ethical and responsible use of technology. The study concludes that educating faith amid algorithms means integrating technology with spiritual and relational values, rather than rejecting digitalization. These findings underscore the importance of fostering family-based humanistic digital literacy that strikes a balance between technical competence and ethical and spiritual awareness.

Abstract

This research is a qualitative descriptive study that explores EFL teachers' perspectives on the implementation of code-switching and code-mixing in classroom settings. Implementing observation and stimulated recall interviews using an observation sheet and video, four EFL teachers at MAN Ambon, selected through purposive sampling, were first observed and then interviewed to elaborate on their insights into the use of these linguistic strategies in teaching. Moreover, the analysis of the interactive data followed three stages: data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing or verification. The findings reveal that teachers' perceptions are diverse, which can be divided into two main categories: positive and negative. On the positive side, teachers notice that code-switching and code-mixing are tools that enhance students' understanding, increase motivation, and aid in vocabulary acquisition. On the other hand, negative perceptions include concerns about the risk of monotonous repetition leading to students' lack of interest and the possibility of deviating from standard language norms. These findings are expected to contribute to teachers and other researchers by enriching their understanding of the pedagogical implications of language alternation practices in EFL classrooms.

Abstract

The learning model in pesantren (Islamic boarding schools), which is characterized by cultural indoctrination, leads to a very slow transformation process towards a critical pedagogy model. The impact on students includes a lack of independent thought and rationality, as well as a decline in critical and creative thinking skills. Research conducted in three Pesantren on the Island of Java indicates that Pesantren Tebuireng represents a fully integrated model. Pesantren Baitul Hikmah is undergoing a selective integration transformation model. In contrast, Pesantren Ngruki follows an instrumental integration transformation model. There are five parameters used as indicators of educational transformation: leadership transformation, education system transformation, curriculum transformation, teaching method transformation, and transformation in the level of student rationality and creativity. Ideally, Islamic educational institutions, such as pesantren, should aim to develop skills, foster rational thinking, and uphold morality grounded in religious knowledge. The purpose of this study is to examine the transformation process of spiritual learning models from indoctrinative to critical, analytical, and rational models in three pesantren in Java. This study is a descriptive, qualitative investigation that employs descriptive analysis as its method. The study concludes that among the three pesantren, only Pesantren Tebuireng has undergone a significant transformation from an indoctrinative learning model to a critical pedagogy. Meanwhile, changes at Pesantren Baitul Hikmah and Ngruki remain insignificant.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the implementation of multicultural values in the teaching of Islamic Religious Education and Character (PAI-BP) at SMK Negeri 3 Ambon, as well as its contribution to fostering interreligious harmony. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through observation, interviews, document analysis, and questionnaires. The study subjects include the school principal, Islamic Religious Education teachers, and students of SMK Negeri 3 Ambon. Data analysis was conducted descriptively through the processes of data reduction, presentation, and conclusion. The findings reveal that Islamic Religious Education teachers integrate multicultural values into their teaching by applying inclusive and dialogical approaches, and by connecting learning with local values in students' daily lives both at school and in the community. This approach fosters tolerance, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence within the multicultural school environment as well as in society. Theoretically, this study strengthens the academic position at the intersection of Islamic education, multicultural studies, and the sociology of education. Practically, the research provides a model for implementing multicultural education based on the Islamic values of Rahmatan lil' Alamin, contextualized and relevant to post-conflict vocational schools. Thus, this study contributes to the development of religious education that is humanistic, democratic, and oriented toward strengthening social cohesion amid national diversity.

Abstract

Event management is a professional activity that brings together a group of people to carry out specific tasks or events. This activity aims to train students in managing activities related to the theme of training, thereby improving their communication, leadership, and time management skills. The method used is service learning, which involves the direct participation of students from the MPI FITK UIN AM Sangadji Ambon Study Program as the organising committee, utilising a participatory approach through the delivery of interactive materials and panel discussions. The implementation of the activity involved 11 students in grades X and XI of Al Hilaal Ambon High School. The results of the activity showed that students were trained in the courage to speak in public, the importance of leading and managing groups, and were given tips on managing time related to their academic activities. The results obtained by students in managing activities through the application of event management stages, ranging from research, design, planning, coordination, and evaluation, show that there are obstacles in the coordination aspect. It is due to a change in the implementation schedule, where activities that were originally scheduled together must be carried out earlier than the planned target. However, this activity provides dual benefits, namely, strengthening students' soft skills and improving student competence in managing educational events professionally.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze religious moderation and dialogical literacy, as well as the use of digital platforms to promote religious moderation as a strategic step toward achieving Indonesia Emas 2045—an inclusive and harmonious national vision. The primary focus of this study is to investigate the extent to which understanding the values of religious moderation, the effectiveness of digital literacy, and the utilization of information technology can enhance tolerance and interreligious harmony. The research employed a descriptive quantitative method, collecting data through online questionnaires distributed to participants of the Religious Moderation Facilitator Training within the Ministry of Religious Affairs in the Maluku region in 2024. The findings indicate that most respondents demonstrated a high level of understanding of the values of religious moderation. A total of 76.7% strongly agreed that religious moderation fosters social harmony, while 72.1% understood moderation as a rejection of extremism. In the context of digitalization, 48.6% of respondents had used information technology for interfaith dialogue, 38.9% did so regularly, and 55.1% utilized digital platforms to promote moderation. Moreover, 40.6% of respondents rated digital literacy as highly effective, and 30.4% considered it effective in supporting interfaith dialogue. The study contributes by emphasizing that integrating dialogical literacy and digital technology is a crucial strategy for strengthening religious moderation in the global era. These findings provide an empirical basis for education and social policies rooted in digital literacy to foster tolerance, inclusivity, and interreligious harmony in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the impact of training programs for civil servants (ASN) on two key aspects: first, the implementation of their duties and responsibilities; and second, the improvement of organisational performance and service delivery to stakeholders. The research employed a quantitative method. Data were collected using a non-test technique in the form of a questionnaire. Accordingly, the research instrument was a questionnaire consisting of a list of statements with five alternative answers on a Likert scale. The population consisted of all civil servants from the Ministry of Religious Affairs in Maluku and North Maluku Provinces, while the sample comprised randomly selected civil servants from the same population who served as respondents. The collected data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Descriptive statistics were used to present the distribution of respondents' data, while inferential statistics were employed in a One-Sample t-test with a 5% significance level. In this context, inferential statistics were used to generalise whether the MOOC Pintar training had a significant impact. The findings reveal that the MOOC Pintar training has a significant impact on civil servants of the Ministry of Religious Affairs in Maluku and North Maluku Provinces. These results underscore the importance of sustaining the MOOC Pintar training continuously, given its significant contribution to improving civil servants' task implementation, positional responsibilities, organisational performance, and stakeholder service. Although this research is limited to the perceptions of civil servants in the two provinces and the impact measured was confined to their self-perceptions, without incorporating supervisors' assessments, the findings nonetheless provide valuable recommendations for future studies in other regions. Further research, including supervisor evaluations, is suggested to broaden the scope of data regarding the impact of MOOC Pintar on civil servants of the Ministry of Religious Affairs.
